Psalms 78

Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

آسف کا زبور۔ حکمت کا گیت۔ اے میری قوم، میری ہدایت پر دھیان دے، میرے منہ کی باتوں پر کان لگا۔

I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

مَیں تمثیلوں میں بات کروں گا، قدیم زمانے کے معمے بیان کروں گا۔

Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

جو کچھ ہم نے سن لیا اور ہمیں معلوم ہوا ہے، جو کچھ ہمارے باپ دادا نے ہمیں سنایا ہے

We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

اُسے ہم اُن کی اولاد سے نہیں چھپائیں گے۔ ہم آنے والی پشت کو رب کے قابلِ تعریف کام بتائیں گے، اُس کی قدرت اور معجزات بیان کریں گے۔

For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

کیونکہ اُس نے یعقوب کی اولاد کو شریعت دی، اسرائیل میں احکام قائم کئے۔ اُس نے فرمایا کہ ہمارے باپ دادا یہ احکام اپنی اولاد کو سکھائیں

That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

تاکہ آنے والی پشت بھی اُنہیں اپنائے، وہ بچے جو ابھی پیدا نہیں ہوئے تھے۔ پھر اُنہیں بھی اپنے بچوں کو سنانا تھا۔

That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

کیونکہ اللہ کی مرضی ہے کہ اِس طرح ہر پشت اللہ پر اعتماد رکھ کر اُس کے عظیم کام نہ بھولے بلکہ اُس کے احکام پر عمل کرے۔

And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

وہ نہیں چاہتا کہ وہ اپنے باپ دادا کی مانند ہوں جو ضدی اور سرکش نسل تھے، ایسی نسل جس کا دل ثابت قدم نہیں تھا اور جس کی روح وفاداری سے اللہ سے لپٹی نہ رہی۔

The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.

چنانچہ افرائیم کے مرد گو کمانوں سے لیس تھے جنگ کے وقت فرار ہوئے۔

They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

وہ اللہ کے عہد سے وفادار نہ رہے، اُس کی شریعت پر عمل کرنے کے لئے تیار نہیں تھے۔

And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.

جو کچھ اُس نے کیا تھا، جو معجزے اُس نے اُنہیں دکھائے تھے، افرائیمی وہ سب کچھ بھول گئے۔

Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

ملکِ مصر کے علاقے ضُعن میں اُس نے اُن کے باپ دادا کے دیکھتے دیکھتے معجزے کئے تھے۔

He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.

سمندر کو چیر کر اُس نے اُنہیں اُس میں سے گزرنے دیا، اور دونوں طرف پانی مضبوط دیوار کی طرح کھڑا رہا۔

In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

دن کو اُس نے بادل کے ذریعے اور رات بھر چمک دار آگ سے اُن کی قیادت کی۔

He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

ریگستان میں اُس نے پتھروں کو چاک کر کے اُنہیں سمندر کی سی کثرت کا پانی پلایا۔

He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

اُس نے ہونے دیا کہ چٹان سے ندیاں پھوٹ نکلیں اور پانی دریاؤں کی طرح بہنے لگے۔

And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

لیکن وہ اُس کا گناہ کرنے سے باز نہ آئے بلکہ ریگستان میں اللہ تعالیٰ سے سرکش رہے۔

And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

جان بوجھ کر اُنہوں نے اللہ کو آزما کر وہ خوراک مانگی جس کا لالچ کرتے تھے۔

Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

اللہ کے خلاف کفر بک کر وہ بولے، ”کیا اللہ ریگستان میں ہمارے لئے میز بچھا سکتا ہے؟

Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

بےشک جب اُس نے چٹان کو مارا تو پانی پھوٹ نکلا اور ندیاں بہنے لگیں۔ لیکن کیا وہ روٹی بھی دے سکتا ہے، اپنی قوم کو گوشت بھی مہیا کر سکتا ہے؟ یہ تو ناممکن ہے۔“

Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

یہ سن کر رب طیش میں آ گیا۔ یعقوب کے خلاف آگ بھڑک اُٹھی، اور اُس کا غضب اسرائیل پر نازل ہوا۔

Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

کیوں؟ اِس لئے کہ اُنہیں اللہ پر یقین نہیں تھا، وہ اُس کی نجات پر بھروسا نہیں رکھتے تھے۔

Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,

اِس کے باوجود اللہ نے اُن کے اوپر بادلوں کو حکم دے کر آسمان کے دروازے کھول دیئے۔

And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

اُس نے کھانے کے لئے اُن پر مَن برسایا، اُنہیں آسمان سے روٹی کھلائی۔

Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.

ہر ایک نے فرشتوں کی یہ روٹی کھائی بلکہ اللہ نے اِتنا کھانا بھیجا کہ اُن کے پیٹ بھر گئے۔

He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.

پھر اُس نے آسمان پر مشرقی ہَوا چلائی اور اپنی قدرت سے جنوبی ہَوا پہنچائی۔

He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:

اُس نے گرد کی طرح اُن پر گوشت برسایا، سمندر کی ریت جیسے بےشمار پرندے اُن پر گرنے دیئے۔

And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

خیمہ گاہ کے بیچ میں ہی وہ گر پڑے، اُن کے گھروں کے ارد گرد ہی زمین پر آ گرے۔

So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;

تب وہ کھا کھا کر خوب سیر ہو گئے، کیونکہ جس کا لالچ وہ کرتے تھے وہ اللہ نے اُنہیں مہیا کیا تھا۔

They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

لیکن اُن کا لالچ ابھی پورا نہیں ہوا تھا اور گوشت ابھی اُن کے منہ میں تھا

The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

کہ اللہ کا غضب اُن پر نازل ہوا۔ قوم کے کھاتے پیتے لوگ ہلاک ہوئے، اسرائیل کے جوان خاک میں مل گئے۔

For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.

اِن تمام باتوں کے باوجود وہ اپنے گناہوں میں اضافہ کرتے گئے اور اُس کے معجزات پر ایمان نہ لائے۔

Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

اِس لئے اُس نے اُن کے دن ناکامی میں گزرنے دیئے، اور اُن کے سال دہشت کی حالت میں اختتام پذیر ہوئے۔

When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.

جب کبھی اللہ نے اُن میں قتل و غارت ہونے دی تو وہ اُسے ڈھونڈنے لگے، وہ مُڑ کر اللہ کو تلاش کرنے لگے۔

And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

تب اُنہیں یاد آیا کہ اللہ ہماری چٹان، اللہ تعالیٰ ہمارا چھڑانے والا ہے۔

Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

لیکن وہ منہ سے اُسے دھوکا دیتے، زبان سے اُسے جھوٹ پیش کرتے تھے۔

For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

نہ اُن کے دل ثابت قدمی سے اُس کے ساتھ لپٹے رہے، نہ وہ اُس کے عہد سے وفادار رہے۔

But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

توبھی اللہ رحم دل رہا۔ اُس نے اُنہیں تباہ نہ کیا بلکہ اُن کا قصور معاف کرتا رہا۔ بار بار وہ اپنے غضب سے باز آیا، بار بار اپنا پورا قہر اُن پر اُتارنے سے گریز کیا۔

For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

کیونکہ اُسے یاد رہا کہ وہ فانی انسان ہیں، ہَوا کا ایک جھونکا جو گزر کر کبھی واپس نہیں آتا۔

How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!

ریگستان میں وہ کتنی دفعہ اُس سے سرکش ہوئے، کتنی مرتبہ اُسے دُکھ پہنچایا۔

Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

بار بار اُنہوں نے اللہ کو آزمایا، بار بار اسرائیل کے قدوس کو رنجیدہ کیا۔

They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.

اُنہیں اُس کی قدرت یاد نہ رہی، وہ دن جب اُس نے فدیہ دے کر اُنہیں دشمن سے چھڑایا،

How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:

وہ دن جب اُس نے مصر میں اپنے الٰہی نشان دکھائے، ضُعن کے علاقے میں اپنے معجزے کئے۔

And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.

اُس نے اُن کی نہروں کا پانی خون میں بدل دیا، اور وہ اپنی ندیوں کا پانی پی نہ سکے۔

He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.

اُس نے اُن کے درمیان جوؤں کے غول بھیجے جو اُنہیں کھا گئیں، مینڈک جو اُن پر تباہی لائے۔

He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.

اُن کی پیداوار اُس نے جوان ٹڈیوں کے حوالے کی، اُن کی محنت کا پھل بالغ ٹڈیوں کے سپرد کیا۔

He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.

اُن کی انگور کی بیلیں اُس نے اولوں سے، اُن کے انجیرتوت کے درخت سیلاب سے تباہ کر دیئے۔

He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.

اُن کے مویشی اُس نے اولوں کے حوالے کئے، اُن کے ریوڑ بجلی کے سپرد کئے۔

He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.

اُس نے اُن پر اپنا شعلہ زن غضب نازل کیا۔ قہر، خفگی اور مصیبت یعنی تباہی لانے والے فرشتوں کا پورا دستہ اُن پر حملہ آور ہوا۔

He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

اُس نے اپنے غضب کے لئے راستہ تیار کر کے اُنہیں موت سے نہ بچایا بلکہ مہلک وبا کی زد میں آنے دیا۔

And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:

مصر میں اُس نے تمام پہلوٹھوں کو مار ڈالا اور حام کے خیموں میں مردانگی کا پہلا پھل تمام کر دیا۔

But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

پھر وہ اپنی قوم کو بھیڑبکریوں کی طرح مصر سے باہر لا کر ریگستان میں ریوڑ کی طرح لئے پھرا۔

And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

وہ حفاظت سے اُن کی قیادت کرتا رہا۔ اُنہیں کوئی ڈر نہیں تھا جبکہ اُن کے دشمن سمندر میں ڈوب گئے۔

And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

یوں اللہ نے اُنہیں مُقدّس ملک تک پہنچایا، اُس پہاڑ تک جسے اُس کے دہنے ہاتھ نے حاصل کیا تھا۔

He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

اُن کے آگے آگے وہ دیگر قومیں نکالتا گیا۔ اُن کی زمین اُس نے تقسیم کر کے اسرائیلیوں کو میراث میں دی، اور اُن کے خیموں میں اُس نے اسرائیلی قبیلے بسائے۔

Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

اِس کے باوجود وہ اللہ تعالیٰ کو آزمانے سے باز نہ آئے بلکہ اُس سے سرکش ہوئے اور اُس کے احکام کے تحت نہ رہے۔

But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

اپنے باپ دادا کی طرح وہ غدار بن کر بےوفا ہوئے۔ وہ ڈھیلی کمان کی طرح ناکام ہو گئے۔

For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

اُنہوں نے اونچی جگہوں کی غلط قربان گاہوں سے اللہ کو غصہ دلایا اور اپنے بُتوں سے اُسے رنجیدہ کیا۔

When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:

جب اللہ کو خبر ملی تو وہ غضب ناک ہوا اور اسرائیل کو مکمل طور پر مسترد کر دیا۔

So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

اُس نے سَیلا میں اپنی سکونت گاہ چھوڑ دی، وہ خیمہ جس میں وہ انسان کے درمیان سکونت کرتا تھا۔

And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand.

عہد کا صندوق اُس کی قدرت اور جلال کا نشان تھا، لیکن اُس نے اُسے دشمن کے حوالے کر کے جلاوطنی میں جانے دیا۔

He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

اپنی قوم کو اُس نے تلوار کی زد میں آنے دیا، کیونکہ وہ اپنی موروثی ملکیت سے نہایت ناراض تھا۔

The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.

قوم کے جوان نذرِ آتش ہوئے، اور اُس کی کنواریوں کے لئے شادی کے گیت گائے نہ گئے۔

Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

اُس کے امام تلوار سے قتل ہوئے، اور اُس کی بیواؤں نے ماتم نہ کیا۔

Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

تب رب جاگ اُٹھا، اُس آدمی کی طرح جس کی نیند اُچاٹ ہو گئی ہو، اُس سورمے کی مانند جس سے نشے کا اثر اُتر گیا ہو۔

And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

اُس نے اپنے دشمنوں کو مار مار کر بھگا دیا اور اُنہیں ہمیشہ کے لئے شرمندہ کر دیا۔

Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:

اُس وقت اُس نے یوسف کا خیمہ رد کیا اور افرائیم کے قبیلے کو نہ چنا

But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.

بلکہ یہوداہ کے قبیلے اور کوہِ صیون کو چن لیا جو اُسے پیارا تھا۔

And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.

اُس نے اپنا مقدِس بلندیوں کی مانند بنایا، زمین کی مانند جسے اُس نے ہمیشہ کے لئے قائم کیا ہے۔

He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:

اُس نے اپنے خادم داؤد کو چن کر بھیڑبکریوں کے باڑوں سے بُلایا۔

From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.

ہاں، اُس نے اُسے بھیڑوں کی دیکھ بھال سے بُلایا تاکہ وہ اُس کی قوم یعقوب، اُس کی میراث اسرائیل کی گلہ بانی کرے۔

So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

داؤد نے خلوص دلی سے اُن کی گلہ بانی کی، بڑی مہارت سے اُس نے اُن کی راہنمائی کی۔
