Job 38

آنگاه خداوند از میان گِردباد به ایّوب جواب داد:

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

«این کیست که با سخنان پوچ و بی‌معنی خود حکمت مرا انکار می‌کند؟

Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

اکنون مثل یک مرد آماده شو و به سؤالات من جواب بده.

Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

وقتی‌که اساس زمین را بنا نهادم تو کجا بودی؟ اگر می‌دانی بگو.

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

آیا می‌دانی که چه کسی حد و وسعت آن را تعیین نمود؟ چه کسی و به چه ترتیب آن را اندازه کرد؟

Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

ستونهای آن بر چه چیزی قرار دارند و چه کسی بنیاد آن را گذاشت؟

Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

در هنگام وقوع این چیزها ستارگانِ صبحگاهی، سرود شادی را با هم زمزمه کردند و فرشتگان آسمان فریاد شادمانی سر دادند.

When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

وقتی‌که آب دریا از دل زمین فوران کرد، چه کسی دروازه‌های آن را بست؟

Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

این من بودم که روی دریا را با ابر پوشاندم و با تاریکی غلیظ پیچیدم.

When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

کناره‌های آن را تعیین نمودم و با سواحل احاطه‌اش کردم.

And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

به دریا گفتم: «از اینجا جلوتر نرو و موجهای سرکش تو از این نقطه تجاوز نکنند.»

And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

آیا در سراسر عمرت هرگز به صبح فرمان داد‌ه‌ای که بدمد یا به شفق گفته‌ای که در جای خود پدید آید

Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;

و کرانه‌های زمین را فرا گیرد تا روشنی صبح، شرارت شب را از میان بردارد؟

That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

شفق، رنگ زمین را لاله‌گون می‌سازد و همچون لباس رنگ شده درمی‌آورد

It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

و روشنی روز نمایان شده دست شریران را از شرارت کوتاه می‌سازد.

And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.

آیا چشمه‌های دریا را دیده‌ای یا به اعماق دریاها قدم گذاشته‌ای؟

Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?

آیا تا به حال کسی دروازه‌ای را که از دنیای مردگان محافظت می‌کند، به تو نشان داده است؟

Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

آیا می‌دانی که زمین چقدر وسعت دارد؟ اگر می‌دانی به من جواب بده.

Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.

آیا می‌دانی که سرچشمهٔ نور در کجاست و تاریکی از کجا می‌آید؟

Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

آیا می‌توانی حدود آنها را بیابی و راهی را که به منشاء آنها می‌رود، پیدا کنی؟

That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?

تو باید بدانی! زیرا سن تو بسیار زیاد است و در وقت پیدایش دنیا وجود داشتی!

Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?

آیا در مخزنهای برف داخل شده‌ای و می‌دانی که تگرگ در کجا ذخیره می‌شود؟

Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

من آنها را برای روز مصیبت و جنگ انبار کرده‌ام.

Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

آیا می‌دانی که روشنی از کجا می‌تابد و باد شرقی از کجا می‌وزد؟

By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?

چه کسی درّه‌‌ها را برای سیل کَنده و مسیر رعد و برق را ساخته است؟

Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;

چه کسی باران را به بیابانها و جاهای خشک و غیرمسکون می‌فرستد

To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

تا زمینهای متروک و بایر آبیاری شوند و علف به بار آورند؟

To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

آیا باران و شبنم پدر دارند؟

Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

یخ را چه کسی تولید می‌کند و شبنم از کجا به وجود می‌آید؟

Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

چه کسی آب را مثل سنگ به یخ تبدیل می‌کند و سطح دریا را منجمد می‌سازد؟

The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

آیا می‌توانی ستارگان پروین را به هم ببندی و رشتهٔ منظومهٔ جبار را بگشایی؟

Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

آیا می‌توانی حرکت ستارگان را در فصلهای مختلف اداره کنی و دُب اکبر را با اقمار آن هدایت نمایی؟

Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?

آیا از قوانین آسمانها اطّلاع داری و می‌توانی آنها را در روی زمین تطبیق دهی؟

Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?

آیا می‌توانی به ابرها فرمان بدهی که سیل باران را بر سرت ببارند؟

Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

آیا می‌توانی به برق امر کنی که در مسیر خود حرکت کند و برق به تو بگوید، اطاعت می‌کنم؟

Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?

چه کسی به انسان عقل و حکمت داد؟

Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

چه کسی آن‌قدر دانش دارد که بتواند ابرها را بشمارد و مشکهای آسمان را بر روی زمین خالی کند

Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,

و خاک را به هم آمیخته از آن کلوخ بسازد؟

When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?

آیا می‌توانی برای شیر، شکار تهیّه کنی و به او و بچّه‌هایش که در بیشهٔ خود در کمین نشسته‌اند، خوراک بدهی؟

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

آیا می‌توانی برای شیر، شکار تهیّه کنی و به او و بچّه‌هایش که در بیشهٔ خود در کمین نشسته‌اند، خوراک بدهی؟

When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

چه کسی برای زاغها که با شکم گرسنه به هر سو پرواز می‌کنند و جوجه‌هایشان که در آشیانه برای غذا فریاد می‌زنند، خوراک آماده می‌نماید؟

Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
