Job 41

Prenderai tu il coccodrillo all’amo? Gli assicurerai la lingua colla corda?

Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?

Gli passerai un giunco per le narici? Gli forerai le mascelle con l’uncino?

Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?

Ti rivolgerà egli molte supplicazioni? Ti dirà egli delle parole dolci?

Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?

Farà egli teco un patto perché tu lo prenda per sempre al tuo servizio?

Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?

Scherzerai tu con lui come fosse un uccello? L’attaccherai a un filo per divertir le tue ragazze?

Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?

Ne trafficheranno forse i pescatori? Lo spartiranno essi fra i negozianti?

Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?

Gli coprirai tu la pelle di dardi e la testa di ramponi?

Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?

Mettigli un po’ le mani addosso!… Ti ricorderai del combattimento e non ci tornerai!

Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.

Ecco, fallace è la speranza di chi l’assale; basta scorgerlo e s’è atterrati.

Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?

Nessuno è tanto ardito da provocarlo. E chi dunque oserà starmi a fronte?

None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?

Chi mi ha anticipato alcun che perch’io glielo debba rendere? Sotto tutti i cieli, ogni cosa è mia.

Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.

E non vo’ tacer delle sue membra, della sua gran forza, della bellezza della sua armatura.

I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.

Chi l’ha mai spogliato della sua corazza? Chi è penetrato fra la doppia fila de’ suoi denti?

Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?

Chi gli ha aperti i due battenti della gola? Intorno alla chiostra de’ suoi denti sta il terrore.

Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.

Superbe son le file de’ suoi scudi, strettamente uniti come da un sigillo.

His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.

Uno tocca l’altro, e tra loro non passa l’aria.

One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.

Sono saldati assieme, si tengono stretti, sono inseparabili.

They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.

I suoi starnuti dànno sprazzi di luce; i suoi occhi son come le palpebre dell’aurora.

By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

Dalla sua bocca partono vampe, ne scappan fuori scintille di fuoco.

Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.

Dalle sue narici esce un fumo, come da una pignatta che bolla o da una caldaia.

Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.

L’alito suo accende i carboni, e una fiamma gli erompe dalla gola.

His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.

Nel suo collo risiede la forza, dinanzi a lui salta il terrore.

In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.

Compatte sono in lui le parti flosce della carne, gli stanno salde addosso, non si muovono.

The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.

Il suo cuore è duro come il sasso, duro come la macina di sotto.

His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.

Quando si rizza, tremano i più forti, e dalla paura son fuori di sé.

When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.

Invano lo si attacca con la spada; a nulla valgon lancia, giavellotto, corazza.

The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.

Il ferro è per lui come paglia; il rame, come legno tarlato.

He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.

La figlia dell’arco non lo mette in fuga; le pietre della fionda si mutano per lui in stoppia.

The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.

Stoppia gli par la mazza e si ride del fremer della lancia.

Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.

Il suo ventre è armato di punte acute, e lascia come tracce d’erpice sul fango.

Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.

Fa bollire l’abisso come una caldaia, del mare fa come un gran vaso da profumi.

He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.

Si lascia dietro una scia di luce; l’abisso par coperto di bianca chioma.

He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.

Non v’è sulla terra chi lo domi; è stato fatto per non aver paura.

Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.

Guarda in faccia tutto ciò ch’è eccelso, è re su tutte le belve più superbe".

He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.
