Proverbs 6

हे मेरे पुत्र, बिना समझे बूझे यदि किसी की जमानत दी है अथवा किसी के लिये वचनबद्ध हुआ है,

My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,

यदि तू अपने ही कथन के जाल में फँस गया है, तू अपने मुख के ही शब्दों के पिंजरे में बन्द हो गया है

Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

तो मेरे पुत्र, क्योंकि तू औरों के हाथों में पड़ गया है, तू स्वंय को बचाने को ऐसा कर: तू उसके निकट जा और विनम्रता से अपने पड़ोसो से अनुनय विनम्र कर।

Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.

निरन्तर जागता रह, आँखों में नींद न हो और तेरी पलकों में झपकी तक न आये।

Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

स्वंय को चंचल हिरण शिकारी के हाथ से और किसी पक्षा सा उसके जाल से छुड़ा ले।

Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

अरे ओ आलसी, चींटी के पास जा। उसकी कार्य विधि देख और उससे सीख ले।

Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

उसका न तो काई नायक है, न ही कोई निरीक्षक न ही कोई शासक है।

Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,

फिर भी वह ग्रीष्म में भोजन बटोरती है और कटनी के समय खाना जुटाती है।

Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

अरे ओ दीर्घ सूत्री, कब तक तुम यहाँ पड़े ही रहोगे? अपनी निद्रा से तुम कब जाग उठोगे?

How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

तुम कहते रहोगे, “थोड़ा सा और सो लूँ, एक झपकी ले लूँ, थोड़ा सुस्ताने को हाथों पर हाथ रख लूँ।”

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

और बस तुझको दरिद्रता एक बटमार सी आ घेरेगी और अभाव शस्त्रधारी सा घेर लेगा।

So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

नीच और दुष्ट वह होता है जो बुरी बातें बोलता हुआ फिरता रहता है।

A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.

जो आँखों द्वारा इशारा करता है और अपने पैरों से संकेत देता है और अपनी उगंलियों से इशारे करता है।

He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;

जो अपने मन में षड्यन्त्र रचता है और जो सदा अनबन उपजाता रहता है।

Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.

अत: उस पर अचानक महानाश गिरेगा और तत्काल वह नष्ट हो जायेगा। उस के पास बचने का उपाय भी नहीं होगा।

Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

ये हैं छ: बातें वे जिनसे यहोवा घृणा रखता और ये ही सात बातें जिनसे है उसको बैर:

These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

गर्वीली आँखें, झूठ से भरी वाणी, वे हाथ जो अबोध के हत्यारे हैं।

A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

ऐसा हृदय जो कुचक्र भरी योजनाएँ रचता रहताहै, ऐसे पैर जो पाप के मार्ग पर तुरन्त दौड़ पड़ते हैं।

An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

वह झूठा गवाह, जो निरन्तर झूठ उगलता है और ऐसा व्यक्ति जो भाईयों के बीच फूट डाले।

A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

हे मेरे पुत्र, अपने पिता की आज्ञा का पालन कर और अपनी माता की सीख को कभी मत त्याग।

My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

अपने हृदय पर उनको सदैव बाँध रह और उन्हें अपने गले का हार बना ले।

Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.

जब तू आगे बढ़ेगा, वे राह दिखायेंगे। जब तू सो जायेगा, वे तेरी रखवाली करेंगे और जब तू जागेगा, वे तुझसे बातें करेंगे।

When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

क्योंकि ये आज्ञाएँ दीपक हैं और यह शिक्षा एक ज्योति है। अनुशासन के सुधार तो जीवन का मार्ग है।

For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

जो तुझे चरित्रहीन स्त्री से और भटकी हुई कुलटा की फुसलाती बातों से बचाते हैं।

To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

तू अपने मन को उसकी सुन्दरता पर कभी वासना सक्त मत होने दे और उसकी आँखों का जादू मत चढ़ने दे।

Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

क्योंकि वह वेश्या तो तुझको रोटी—रोटी का मुहताज कर देगी किन्तु वह कुलटा तो तेरा जीवन ही हर लेगी!

For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.

क्या यह सम्भव है कि कोई किसी के गोद में आग रख दे और उसके वस्त्र फिर भी जरा भी न जलें?

Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

दहकते अंगारों पर क्या कोई जन अपने पैरों को बिना झुलसाये हुए चल सकता है?

Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

वह मनुष्य ऐसा ही है जो किसा अन्य की पत्नी से समागम करता है। ऐसी पर स्त्री के जो भी कोई छूएगा, वह बिना दण्ड पाये नहीं रह पायेगा।

So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.

यदि कोई चोर कभी भूखों मरता हो, यदि यह भूख को मिटाने के लिये चोरी करे तो लोग उस से घृणा नहीं करेंगे। फिर भी यदि वह पकड़ा जाये तो उसे सात गुणा भरना पड़ता है चाहे उससे उसके घर का समूचा धन चुक जाये।

Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;

यदि कोई चोर कभी भूखों मरता हो, यदि यह भूख को मिटाने के लिये चोरी करे तो लोग उस से घृणा नहीं करेंगे। फिर भी यदि वह पकड़ा जाये तो उसे सात गुणा भरना पड़ता है चाहे उससे उसके घर का समूचा धन चुक जाये।

But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

किन्तु जो पर स्त्री से समागम करता है उसके पास तो विवेक का आभाव है। ऐसा जो करता है वह स्वयं को मिटाता है।

But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

प्रहार और अपमान उसका भाग्य है। उसका कलंक कभी नहीं धुल पायेगा।

A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

ईर्ष्या किसी पति का क्रोध जगाती है और जब वह इसका बदला लेगा तब वह उस पर दया नहीं करेगा।

For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

वह कोई क्षति पूर्ति स्वीकार नहीं करेगा और कोई उसे कितना ही बड़ा प्रलोभन दे, उसे वह स्वीकारे बिना ठुकरायेगा!

He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
