Proverbs 20

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

مَے طعنہ زن کا باپ اور شراب شور شرابہ کی ماں ہے۔ جو یہ پی پی کر ڈگمگانے لگے وہ دانش مند نہیں۔

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

بادشاہ کا قہر جوان شیرببر کی دہاڑوں کی مانند ہے، جو اُسے طیش دلائے وہ اپنی جان پر کھیلتا ہے۔

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

لڑائی جھگڑے سے باز رہنا عزت کا طُرۂ امتیاز ہے جبکہ ہر احمق جھگڑنے کے لئے تیار رہتا ہے۔

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

کاہل وقت پر ہل نہیں چلاتا، چنانچہ جب وہ فصل پکتے وقت اپنے کھیت پر نگاہ کرے تو کچھ نظر نہیں آئے گا۔

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

انسان کے دل کا منصوبہ گہرے پانی کی مانند ہے، لیکن سمجھ دار آدمی اُسے نکال کر عمل میں لاتا ہے۔

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

بہت سے لوگ اپنی وفاداری پر فخر کرتے ہیں، لیکن قابلِ اعتماد شخص کہاں پایا جاتا ہے؟

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

جو راست باز بےالزام زندگی گزارے اُس کی اولاد مبارک ہے۔

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

جب بادشاہ تختِ عدالت پر بیٹھ جائے تو وہ اپنی آنکھوں سے سب کچھ چھان کر ہر غلط بات ایک طرف کر لیتا ہے۔

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

کون کہہ سکتا ہے، ”مَیں نے اپنے دل کو پاک صاف کر رکھا ہے، مَیں اپنے گناہ سے پاک ہو گیا ہوں“؟

Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

غلط باٹ اور غلط پیمائش، رب دونوں سے گھن کھاتا ہے۔

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

لڑکے کا کردار اُس کے سلوک سے معلوم ہوتا ہے۔ اِس سے پتا چلتا ہے کہ اُس کا چال چلن پاک اور راست ہے یا نہیں۔

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

سننے والے کان اور دیکھنے والی آنکھیں دونوں ہی رب نے بنائی ہیں۔

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

نیند کو پیار نہ کر ورنہ غریب ہو جائے گا۔ اپنی آنکھوں کو کھلا رکھ تو جی بھر کر کھانا کھائے گا۔

It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

گاہک دکاندار سے کہتا ہے، ”یہ کیسی ناقص چیز ہے!“ لیکن پھر جا کر دوسروں کے سامنے اپنے سودے پر شیخی مارتا ہے۔

There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

سونا اور کثرت کے موتی پائے جا سکتے ہیں، لیکن سمجھ دار ہونٹ اُن سے کہیں زیادہ قیمتی ہیں۔

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

ضمانت کا وہ لباس واپس نہ کر جو کسی نے پردیسی کا ضامن بن کر دیا ہے۔ اگر وہ اجنبی کا ضامن ہو تو اُس ضمانت پر ضرور قبضہ کر جو اُس نے دی تھی۔

Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

دھوکے سے حاصل کی ہوئی روٹی آدمی کو میٹھی لگتی ہے، لیکن اُس کا انجام کنکروں سے بھرا منہ ہے۔

Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

منصوبے صلاح مشورے سے مضبوط ہو جاتے ہیں، اور جنگ کرنے سے پہلے دوسروں کی ہدایات پر دھیان دے۔

He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

اگر تُو بہتان لگانے والے کو ہم راز بنائے تو وہ اِدھر اُدھر پھر کر بات پھیلائے گا۔ چنانچہ باتونی سے گریز کر۔

Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

جو اپنے باپ یا ماں پر لعنت کرے اُس کا چراغ گھنے اندھیرے میں بجھ جائے گا۔

An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

جو میراث شروع میں بڑی جلدی سے مل جائے وہ آخر میں برکت کا باعث نہیں ہو گی۔

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

مت کہنا، ”مَیں غلط کام کا انتقام لوں گا۔“ رب کے انتظار میں رہ تو وہی تیری مدد کرے گا۔

Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

رب جھوٹے باٹوں سے گھن کھاتا ہے، اور غلط ترازو اُسے اچھا نہیں لگتا۔

Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

رب ہر ایک کے قدم مقرر کرتا ہے۔ تو پھر انسان کس طرح اپنی راہ سمجھ سکتا ہے؟

It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

انسان اپنے لئے پھندا تیار کرتا ہے جب وہ جلدبازی سے مَنت مانتا اور بعد میں ہی مَنت کے نتائج پر غور کرنے لگتا ہے۔

A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

دانش مند بادشاہ بےدینوں کو چھان چھان کر اُڑا لیتا ہے، ہاں وہ گاہنے کا آلہ ہی اُن پر سے گزرنے دیتا ہے۔

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

آدم زاد کی روح رب کا چراغ ہے جو انسان کے باطن کی تہہ تک سب کچھ کی تحقیق کرتا ہے۔

Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

شفقت اور وفا بادشاہ کو محفوظ رکھتی ہیں، شفقت سے وہ اپنا تخت مستحکم کر لیتا ہے۔

The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.

نوجوانوں کا فخر اُن کی طاقت اور بزرگوں کی شان اُن کے سفید بال ہیں۔

The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

زخم اور چوٹیں بُرائی کو دُور کر دیتی ہیں، ضربیں باطن کی تہہ تک سب کچھ صاف کر دیتی ہیں۔
