Proverbs 20

Vinul este batjocoritor, băuturile tari sînt gălăgioase; oricine se îmbată cu ele nu este înţelept. -

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Frica pe care o însuflă împăratul este ca răcnetul unui leu, cine îl supără, păcătuieşte împotriva sa însuş. -

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

Este o cinste pentru om să se ferească de certuri; dar orice nebun se lasă stăpînit de aprindere. -

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

Toamna, leneşul nu ară; la secerat, ar vea să strîngă roade, dar nu este nimic! -

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Sfaturile în inima omului sînt ca nişte ape adînci, dar omul priceput ştie să scoată din ele. -

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Mulţi oameni îşi trîmbiţează bunătatea; dar cine poate găsi un om credincios? -

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

Cel neprihănit umblă în neprihănirea lui; ferice de copiii lui după el! -

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

Împăratul, care şade pe scaunul de domnie al dreptăţii, risipeşte orice rău cu privirea lui. -

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

Cine poate zice: ,,Mi-am curăţit inima, sînt curat de păcatul meu?`` -

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

Două feluri de greutăţi şi două feluri de măsuri, sînt o scîrbă înaintea Domnului. -

Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

Copilul lasă să se vadă încă din faptele lui dacă purtarea lui va fi curată şi fără prihană. -

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

Urechea care aude, şi ochiul care vede, şi pe una şi pe celalt, Domnul le -a făcut. -

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

Nu iubi somnul, căci vei ajunge sărac; deschide ochii, şi te vei sătura de pîne. -

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

,,Rău! Rău!`` zice cumpărătorul, şi plecînd, se fericeşte. -

It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

Este aur şi sînt multe mărgăritare; dar buzele înţelepte sînt un lucru scump. -

There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Ia -i haina, căci s'a pus chezaş pentru altul; şi ţine -l zălog pentru alţii. -

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

Pînea minciunii este dulce omului, dar mai pe urmă gura îi este plină de pietriş. -

Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

Planurile se pun la cale prin sfat! Fă războiul cu chibzuinţă. -

Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

Cine umblă cu bîrfeli dă pe faţă lucrurile ascunse; şi cu cel ce nu-şi poate ţinea gura să nu te amesteci. -

He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

Dacă cineva blăstămă pe tatăl său şi pe mamă-sa, i se va stinge lumina în mijlocul întunerecului. -

Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

O moştenire repede cîştigată dela început, nu va fi binecuvîntată la sfîrşit. -

An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

Nu zice: ,,Îi voi întoarce eu răul!`` Nădăjduieşte în Domnul, şi El te va ajuta. -

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

Domnul urăşte două feluri de greutăţi, şi cîntarul mincinos nu este un lucru bun. -

Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

Domnu îndreaptă paşii omului, dar ce înţelege omul din calea sa? -

Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

Este o cursă pentru om să facă în pripă o făgăduinţă sfîntă, şi abea după ce a făcut juruinţa să se gîndească. -

It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

Un împărat înţelept vîntură pe cei răi, şi trece cu roata peste ei. -

A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

Suflarea omului este o lumină a Domnului, care pătrunde pînă în fundul măruntaielor. -

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

Bunătatea şi credincioşia păzesc pe împărat, şi el îşi întăreşte scaunul de domnie prin bunătate. -

Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

Slava tinerilor este tăria, dar podoaba bătrînilor sînt perii albi. -

The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.

Mijloacele de vindecare pentru cel rău sînt bătăile şi vînătăile pînă la rană. -

The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.
