Proverbs 20

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Вино то насмішник, напій п'янкий галасун, і кожен, хто блудить у ньому, немудрий.

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

Страх царя як рик лева; хто до гніву доводить його, проти свого життя прогрішає.

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

Слава людині, що гнів покидає, а кожен глупак вибухає.

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Лінивий не оре із осени, а захоче в жнива і нічого нема.

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Рада в серці людини глибока вода, і розумна людина її повичерпує.

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

Багато людей себе звуть милосердними, та вірну людину хто знайде?

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

У своїй неповинності праведний ходить, блаженні по ньому сини його!

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

Цар сидить на суддевім престолі, всяке зло розганяє своїми очима.

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

Хто скаже: Очистив я серце своє, очистився я від свого гріха?

Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

Вага неоднакова, неоднакова міра, обоє вони то огида для Господа.

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

Навіть юнак буде пізнаний з чинів своїх, чи чин його чистий й чи простий.

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

Ухо, що слухає, й око, що бачить, Господь учинив їх обоє.

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

Не кохайся в спанні, щоб не збідніти; розплющ свої очі та хлібом наситься!

It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

Зле, зле! каже той, хто купує, а як піде собі, тоді хвалиться купном.

There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Є золото й перел багато, та розумні уста найцінніший то посуд.

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

Візьми його одіж, бо він поручивсь за чужого, і за чужинку візьми його застав.

Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

Хліб з неправди солодкий людині, та піском потім будуть наповнені уста її.

Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

Тримаються заміри радою, і війну провадь мудрими радами.

He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

Виявляє обмовник таємне, а ти не втручайся до того, легко хто розтулює уста свої.

Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

Хто кляне свого батька та матір свою, погасне світильник йому серед темряви!

An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

Спадок спочатку заскоро набутий, не буде кінець його поблагословлений!

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

Не кажи: Надолужу я зло! май надію на Господа, і Він допоможе тобі.

Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

Вага неоднакова то огида для Господа, а оманливі шальки не добрі.

Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

Від Господа кроки людини, а людина як вона зрозуміє дорогу свою?

It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

Тенета людині казати святе нерозважно, а згодом свої обітниці досліджувати.

A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

Мудрий цар розпорошить безбожних, і зверне на них своє коло для мук.

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

Дух людини світильник Господній, що все нутро обшукує.

Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

Милість та правда царя стережуть, і трона свого він підтримує милістю.

The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.

Окраса юнацтва їхня сила, а пишність старих сивина.

The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

Синяки від побоїв то масть лікувальна на злого, та вдари нутру живота.
