Proverbs 20

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Il vino è schernitore, la bevanda alcoolica è turbolenta, e chiunque se ne lascia sopraffare non è savio.

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

Il terrore che incute il re è come il ruggito d’un leone; chi lo irrita pecca contro la propria vita.

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

E’ una gloria per l’uomo l’astenersi dalle contese, ma chiunque è insensato mostra i denti.

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Il pigro non ara a causa del freddo; alla raccolta verrà a cercare, ma non ci sarà nulla.

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

I disegni nel cuor dell’uomo sono acque profonde, ma l’uomo intelligente saprà attingervi.

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

Molta gente vanta la propria bontà; ma un uomo fedele chi lo troverà?

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

I figliuoli del giusto, che cammina nella sua integrità, saranno beati dopo di lui.

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

Il re, assiso sul trono dove rende giustizia, dissipa col suo sguardo ogni male.

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

Chi può dire: "Ho nettato il mio cuore, sono puro dal mio peccato?"

Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

Doppio peso e doppia misura sono ambedue in abominio all’Eterno.

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

Anche il fanciullo dà a conoscere con i suoi atti se la sua condotta sarà pura e retta.

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

L’orecchio che ascolta e l’occhio che vede, li ha fatti ambedue l’Eterno.

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

Non amare il sonno, che tu non abbia a impoverire; tieni aperti gli occhi, e avrai pane da saziarti.

It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

"Cattivo! cattivo!" dice il compratore; ma, andandosene, si vanta dell’acquisto.

There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

C’è dell’oro e abbondanza di perle, ma le labbra ricche di scienza son cosa più preziosa.

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

Prendigli il vestito, giacché ha fatta cauzione per altri; fatti dare dei pegni, poiché s’è reso garante di stranieri.

Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

Il pane frodato è dolce all’uomo; ma, dopo, avrà la bocca piena di ghiaia.

Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

I disegni son resi stabili dal consiglio; fa’ dunque la guerra con una savia direzione.

He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

Chi va sparlando palesa i segreti; perciò non t’immischiare con chi apre troppo le labbra.

Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

Chi maledice suo padre e sua madre, la sua lucerna si spegnerà nelle tenebre più fitte.

An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

L’eredità acquistata troppo presto da principio, alla fine non sarà benedetta.

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

Non dire: "Renderò il male"; spera nell’Eterno, ed egli ti salverà.

Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

Il peso doppio è in abominio all’Eterno, e la bilancia falsa non è cosa buona.

Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

I passi dell’uomo li dirige l’Eterno; come può quindi l’uomo capir la propria via?

It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

E’ pericoloso per l’uomo prender leggermente un impegno sacro, e non riflettere che dopo aver fatto un voto.

A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

Il re savio passa gli empi al vaglio, dopo aver fatto passare la ruota su loro.

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

Lo spirito dell’uomo è una lucerna dell’Eterno che scruta tutti i recessi del cuore.

Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

La bontà e la fedeltà custodiscono il re; e con la bontà egli rende stabile il suo trono.

The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.

La gloria dei giovani sta nella loro forza, e la bellezza dei vecchi, nella loro canizie.

The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

Le battiture che piagano guariscono il male; e così le percosse che vanno al fondo delle viscere.
