Proverbs 20

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

मदिरा और यवसुरा लोगों को काबू में नहीं रहने देते। वह मजाक उड़वाती है और झगड़े करवाती है। वह मदमस्त हो जाते हैं और बुद्धिहीन कार्य करते हैं।

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

राजा का सिंह की दहाड़ सा कोप होता है, जो उसे कुपित करता प्राण से हाथ धोता है।

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

झगड़ो से दूर रहना मनुष्य का आदर है; किन्तु मूर्ख जन तो सदा झगड़े को तत्पर रहते।

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

ऋतु आने पर अदूरदर्शी आलसी हल नहीं डालता है सो कटनी के समय वह ताकता रह जाता है और कुछ भी नहीं पाता है।

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

जन के मन प्रयोजन, गहन जल से छिपे होते किन्तु समझदार व्यक्ति उन्हें बाहर खींच लाता है।

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

लोग अपनी विश्वास योग्यता का बहुत ढोल पीटते हैं, किन्तु विश्वसनीय जन किसको मिल पाता है

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

धर्मी जन निष्कलंक जीवन जीता है उसका बाद आनेवाली संतानें धन्य हैं।

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

जब राजा न्याय को सिंहासन पर विराजता अपनी दृष्टि मात्र से बुराई को फटक छांटता है।

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

कौन कह सकता है “मैंने अपना हृदय पवित्र रखा है, मैं विशुद्ध, और पाप रहित हूँ।”

Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

इन दोनों से, खोटे बाटों और खोटी नापों से यहोवा घृणा करता है।

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

बालक भी अपने कर्मो से जाना जाता है, कि उसका चालचलन शुद्ध है, या नहीं।

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

यहोवा ने कान बनाये हैं कि हम सुनें! यहोवा ने आँखें बनाई हैं कि हम देखें! यहोवा ने इन दोनों को इसलिये हमारे लिये बनाया।

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

निद्रा से प्रेम मत कर दरिद्र हो जायेगा; तू जागता रह तेरे पास भरपूर भोजन होगा।

It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

ग्राहक खरीदते समय कहता है, “अच्छा नहीं, बहुत महंगा!” किन्तु जब वहाँ से दूर चला जाता है अपनी खरीद की शेखी बघारता है।

There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

सोना बहुत है और मणि माणिक बहुत सारे हैं, किन्तु ऐसे अधर जो बातें ज्ञान की बताते दुर्लभ रत्न होते हैं।

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

जो किसी अजनबी के ऋण की जमानत देता है वह अपने वस्त्र तक गंवा बैठता है।

Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

छल से कमाई रोटी मीठी लगती है पर अंत में उसका मुंह कंकड़ों से भर जाता।

Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

योजनाएँ बनाने से पहले तू उत्तम सलाह पा लिया कर। यदि युद्ध करना हो तो उत्तम लोगों से आगुवा लें।

He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

बकवादी विश्वास को धोखा देता है सो, उस व्यक्ति से बच जो बुहत बोलता हो।

Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

कोई मनुष्य यदि निज पिता को अथवा निज माता को कोसे, उसका दीया बुझ जायेगा और गहन अंधकार हो जायेगा।

An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

यदि तेरी सम्पत्ति तुझे आसानी से मिल गई हो तो वह तुझे अधिक मूल्यवान नहीं लगेगा।

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

इस बुराई का बदला मैं तुझसे लूँगा। ऐसा तू मत कह; यहोवा की बाट जोह तुझे वही मुक्त करेगा।

Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

यहोवा खोटे—झूठे बाटों से घृणा करता है और उसको खोटे नाप नहीं भाते हैं।

Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

यहोवा निर्णय करता है कि हर एक मनुष्य के साथ क्या घटना चाहिये। कोई मनुष्य कैसा समझ सकता है कि उसके जीवन में क्या घटने वाला है।

It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

यहोवा को कुछ अर्पण करने की प्रतिज्ञा से पूर्व ही विचार ले; भली भांति विचार ले। सम्भव है यदि तू बाद में ऐसा सोचे, “अच्छा होता मैं वह मन्नत न मानता।”

A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

विवेकी राजा यह निर्णय करता है कि कौन बुरा जन है। और वह राजा उस जन को दण्ड देगा।

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

यहोवा का दीपक जन की आत्मा को जाँच लेता, और उसके अन्तरात्मा स्वरूप को खोज लेता है।

Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

राजा को सत्य और निष्ठा सुरक्षित रखते, किन्तु उसका सिंहासन करुणा पर टिकता है।

The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.

युवकों की महिमा उनके बल से होती है और वृद्धों का गौरव उनके पके बाल हैं।

The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

यदि हमें दण्ड दिया जाये तो हम बुरा करना छोड़ देते हैं। दर्द मनुष्य का परिवर्तन कर सकता है।
