Proverbs 26

As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

Як літом той сніг, і як дощ у жнива, так не лицює глупцеві пошана.

As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

Як пташка літає, як ластівка лине, так невинне прокляття не сповниться.

A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

Батіг на коня, оброть на осла, а різка на спину глупців.

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

Нерозумному відповіді не давай за нерозум його, щоб і ти не став рівний йому.

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

Нерозумному відповідь дай за безумством його, щоб він в очах своїх не став мудрим.

He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.

Хто через глупця посилає слова, той ноги собі обтинає, отруту він п'є.

The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

Як волочаться ноги в кульгавого, так у безумних устах приповістка.

As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.

Як прив'язувати камінь коштовний до пращі, так глупцеві пошану давати.

As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

Як терен, що влізе у руку, отак приповістка в устах нерозумного.

The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.

Як стрілець, що все ранить, так і той, хто наймає глупця, і наймає усяких прохожих.

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.

Як вертається пес до своєї блювотини, так глупоту свою повторяє глупак.

Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

Чи ти бачив людину, що мудра в очах своїх? Більша надія глупцеві, ніж їй.

The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

Лінивий говорить: Лев на дорозі! Лев на майдані!

As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

Двері обертаються на своєму чопі, а лінивий на ліжку своїм.

The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.

Свою руку лінивий стромляє до миски, та піднести до рота її йому тяжко.

The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

Лінивий мудріший ув очах своїх за сімох, що відповідають розумно.

He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

Пса за вуха хапає, хто, йдучи, устряває до сварки чужої.

As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,

Як той, хто вдає божевільного, кидає іскри, стріли та смерть,

So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

так і людина, що обманює друга свого та каже: Таж це я жартую!...

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

З браку дров огонь гасне, а без пліткаря мовкне сварка.

As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

Вугілля для жару, а дрова огневі, а людина сварлива щоб сварку розпалювати.

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Слова обмовника мов ті присмаки, й у нутро живота вони сходять.

Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

Як срібло з жужелицею, на горшкові накладене, так полум'яні уста, а серце лихе,

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;

устами своїми маскується ворог, і ховає оману в своєму нутрі:

When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

коли він говорить лагідно не вір ти йому, бо в серці його сім огид!

Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

Як ненависть прикрита оманою, її зло відкривається в зборі.

Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

Хто яму копає, той в неї впаде, а хто котить каміння на нього воно повертається.

A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

Брехливий язик ненавидить своїх утискуваних, і уста гладенькі до згуби провадять.
