Proverbs 24

Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

شریروں سے حسد نہ کر، نہ اُن سے صحبت رکھنے کی آرزو رکھ،

For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

کیونکہ اُن کا دل ظلم کرنے پر تُلا رہتا ہے، اُن کے ہونٹ دوسروں کو دُکھ پہنچاتے ہیں۔

Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:

حکمت گھر کو تعمیر کرتی، سمجھ اُسے مضبوط بنیاد پر کھڑا کر دیتی،

And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

اور علم و عرفان اُس کے کمروں کو بیش قیمت اور من موہن چیزوں سے بھر دیتا ہے۔

A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

دانش مند کو طاقت حاصل ہوتی اور علم رکھنے والے کی قوت بڑھتی رہتی ہے،

For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.

کیونکہ جنگ کرنے کے لئے ہدایت اور فتح پانے کے لئے متعدد مشیروں کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔

Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.

حکمت اِتنی بلند و بالا ہے کہ احمق اُسے پا نہیں سکتا۔ جب بزرگ شہر کے دروازے میں فیصلہ کرنے کے لئے جمع ہوتے ہیں تو وہ کچھ نہیں کہہ سکتا۔

He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

بُرے منصوبے باندھنے والا سازشی کہلاتا ہے۔

The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

احمق کی چالاکیاں گناہ ہیں، اور لوگ طعنہ زن سے گھن کھاتے ہیں۔

If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.

اگر تُو مصیبت کے دن ہمت ہار کر ڈھیلا ہو جائے تو تیری طاقت جاتی رہے گی۔

If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain;

جنہیں موت کے حوالے کیا جا رہا ہے اُنہیں چھڑا، جو قصائی کی طرف ڈگمگاتے ہوئے جا رہے ہیں اُنہیں روک دے۔

If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

شاید تُو کہے، ”ہمیں تو اِس کے بارے میں علم نہیں تھا۔“ لیکن یقین جان، جو دل کی جانچ پڑتال کرتا ہے وہ بات سمجھتا ہے، جو تیری جان کی دیکھ بھال کرتا ہے اُسے معلوم ہے۔ وہ انسان کو اُس کے اعمال کا بدلہ دیتا ہے۔

My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:

میرے بیٹے، شہد کھا کیونکہ وہ اچھا ہے، چھتے کا خالص شہد میٹھا ہے۔

So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

جان لے کہ حکمت اِسی طرح تیری جان کے لئے میٹھی ہے۔ اگر تُو اُسے پائے تو تیری اُمید جاتی نہیں رہے گی بلکہ تیرا مستقبل اچھا ہو گا۔

Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place:

اے بےدین، راست باز کے گھر کی تاک لگائے مت بیٹھنا، اُس کی رہائش گاہ تباہ نہ کر۔

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

کیونکہ گو راست باز سات بار گر جائے توبھی ہر بار دوبارہ اُٹھ کھڑا ہو گا جبکہ بےدین ایک بار ٹھوکر کھا کر مصیبت میں پھنسا رہے گا۔

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:

اگر تیرا دشمن گر جائے تو خوش نہ ہو، اگر وہ ٹھوکر کھائے تو تیرا دل جشن نہ منائے۔

Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

ایسا نہ ہو کہ رب یہ دیکھ کر تیرا رویہ پسند نہ کرے اور اپنا غصہ دشمن پر اُتارنے سے باز آئے۔

Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked;

بدکاروں کو دیکھ کر مشتعل نہ ہو جا، بےدینوں کے باعث کُڑھتا نہ رہ۔

For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.

کیونکہ شریروں کا کوئی مستقبل نہیں، بےدینوں کا چراغ بجھ جائے گا۔

My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:

میرے بیٹے، رب اور بادشاہ کا خوف مان، اور سرکشوں میں شریک نہ ہو۔

For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?

کیونکہ اچانک ہی اُن پر آفت آئے گی، کسی کو پتا ہی نہیں چلے گا جب دونوں اُن پر حملہ کر کے اُنہیں تباہ کر دیں گے۔

These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

ذیل میں دانش مندوں کی مزید کہاوتیں قلم بند ہیں۔ عدالت میں جانب داری دکھانا بُری بات ہے۔

He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:

جو قصوروار سے کہے، ”تُو بےقصور ہے“ اُس پر قومیں لعنت بھیجیں گی، اُس کی سرزنش اُمّتیں کریں گی۔

But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.

لیکن جو قصوروار کو مجرم ٹھہرائے وہ خوش حال ہو گا، اُسے کثرت کی برکت ملے گی۔

Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.

سچا جواب دوست کے بوسے کی مانند ہے۔

Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.

پہلے باہر کا کام مکمل کر کے اپنے کھیتوں کو تیار کر، پھر ہی اپنا گھر تعمیر کر۔

Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.

بلاوجہ اپنے پڑوسی کے خلاف گواہی مت دے۔ یا کیا تُو اپنے ہونٹوں سے دھوکا دینا چاہتا ہے؟

Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.

مت کہنا، ”جس طرح اُس نے میرے ساتھ کیا اُسی طرح مَیں اُس کے ساتھ کروں گا، مَیں اُس کے ہر فعل کا مناسب جواب دوں گا۔“

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

ایک دن مَیں سُست اور ناسمجھ آدمی کے کھیت اور انگور کے باغ میں سے گزرا۔

And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.

ہر جگہ کانٹےدار جھاڑیاں پھیلی ہوئی تھیں، خود رَو پودے پوری زمین پر چھا گئے تھے۔ اُس کی چاردیواری بھی گر گئی تھی۔

Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.

یہ دیکھ کر مَیں نے دل سے دھیان دیا اور سبق سیکھ لیا،

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

اگر تُو کہے، ”مجھے تھوڑی دیر سونے دے، تھوڑی دیر اونگھنے دے، تھوڑی دیر ہاتھ پر ہاتھ دھرے بیٹھنے دے تاکہ مَیں آرام کر سکوں“

So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.

تو خبردار، جلد ہی غربت راہزن کی طرح تجھ پر آئے گی، مفلسی ہتھیار سے لیس ڈاکو کی طرح تجھ پر آ پڑے گی۔
