Proverbs 26

जैसे असंभव है बर्फ का गर्मी में पड़ना और जैसे वांछित नहीं है कटनी के वक्त पर वर्षा का आना वैसे ही मूर्ख को मान देना अर्थहीन है।

As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

यदि तूने किसी का कुछ भी बिगाड़ा नहीं और तुझको वह शाप दे, तो वह शाप व्यर्थ ही रहेगा। उसका शाप पूर्ण वचन तेरे ऊपर से यूँ उड़ निकल जायेगा जैसे चंचल चिड़िया जो टिककर नहीं बैठती।

As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

घोड़े को चाबुक सधाना पड़ता है। और खच्चर को लगाम से। ऐसे ही तुम मूर्ख को डंडे से सधाओ।

A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

मूर्ख को उत्तर मत दो नहीं तो तुम भी स्वयं मूर्ख से दिखोगे। मूर्ख की मूर्खता का तुम उचित उत्तर दो, नहीं तो वह अपनी ही आँखों में बुद्धिमान बन बैठेगा।

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

मूर्ख को उत्तर मत दो नहीं तो तुम भी स्वयं मूर्ख से दिखोगे। मूर्ख की मूर्खता का तुम उचित उत्तर दो, नहीं तो वह अपनी ही आँखों में बुद्धिमान बन बैठेगा।

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

मूर्ख के हाथों सन्देशा भेजना वैसा ही होता है जैसे अपने ही पैरों पर कुल्हाड़ी मारना, या विपत्तिको बुलाना।

He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.

बिना समझी युक्ति किसी मूर्ख के मुख पर ऐसी लगती है, जैसे किसी लंगड़े की लटकती मरी टाँग।

The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

मूर्ख को मान देना वैसा ही होता है जैसे कोई गुलेल में पत्थर रखना।

As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.

मूर्ख के मुख में सूक्ति ऐसे होती है जैसे शराबी के हाथ में काँटेदार झाड़ी हो।

As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

किसी मूर्ख को या किसी अनजाने व्यक्ति को काम पर लगाना खतरनाक हो सकता है। तुम नहीं जानते कि किसे दुःख पहुँचेगा।

The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.

जैसे कोई कुत्ता कुछ खा करके बीमार हो जाता है और उल्टी करके फिर उसको खाता है वैसे ही मूर्ख अपनी मूर्खता बार—बार दोहराता है।

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.

वह मनुष्य जो अपने को बुद्धिमान मानता है, किन्तु होता नहीं है वह तो किसी मूर्ख से भी बुरा होता है।

Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

आलसी करता रहता है, काम नहीं करने के बहाने कभी वह कहता है सड़क पर सिंह है।

The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

जैसे अपनी चूल पर चलता रहता किवाड़। वैसे ही आलसी बिस्तर पर अपने ही करवटें बदलता है।

As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

आलसी अपना हाथ थाली में डालता है किन्तु उसका आलस, उसके अपने ही मुँह तक उसे भोजन नहीं लाने देता।

The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.

आलसी मनुष्य, निज को मानता महाबुद्धिमान! सातों ज्ञानी पुरुषों से भी बुद्धिमान।

The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

ऐसे पथिक जो दूसरों के झगड़े में टाँग अड़ाता है जैसे कुत्ते पर काबू पाने के लिये कोई उसके कान पकड़े।

He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

उस उन्मादी सा जो मशाल उछालता है या मनुष्य जो घातक तीर फेकता है वैसे ही वह भी होता है जो अपने पड़ोसी छलता है और कहता है—मैं तो बस यूँ ही मजाक कर रहा था।

As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,

उस उन्मादी सा जो मशाल उछालता है या मनुष्य जो घातक तीर फेकता है वैसे ही वह भी होता है जो अपने पड़ोसी छलता है और कहता है—मैं तो बस यूँ ही मजाक कर रहा था।

So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

जैसे इन्धन बिना आग बुझ जाती है वैसे ही कानाफूसी बिना झगड़े मिट जाते हैं।

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

कोयला अंगारों को और आग की लपट को लकड़ी जैसे भड़काती है, वैसे ही झगड़ीलू झगड़ों को भड़काता।

As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

जन प्रवाद भोजन से स्वादिष्ट लगते हैं। वे मनुष्य के भीतर उतरते चले जाते हैं।

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

दुष्ट मन वाले की चिकनी चुपड़ी बातें होती है ऐसी, जैसे माटी के बर्तन पर चिपके चाँदी के वर्क।

Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

द्वेषपूर्ण व्यक्ति अपने मधुर वाणी में द्वेष को ढकता है। किन्तु अपने हृदय में वह छल को पालता है।

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;

उसकी मोहक वाणी से उसका भरोसा मत कर, क्योंकि उसके मन में सात घृणित बातें भरी हैं।

When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

छल से किसी का दुर्भाव चाहे छुप जाये किन्तु उसकी दुष्टता सभा के बीच उघड़ेगी।

Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

यदि कोई गढ़ा खोदता है किसी के लिये तो वह स्वयं ही उसमें गिरेगा; यदि कोई व्यक्ति कोई पत्थर लुढ़काता है तो वह लुढ़क कर उसी पर पड़ेगा।

Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

ऐसा व्यक्ति जो झूठ बोलता है, उनसे घृणा करता है जिनको हानि पहुँचाता और चापलूस स्वयं का नाश करता।

A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
