Proverbs 26

Wie Schnee im Sommer und wie Regen in der Ernte, so ist Ehre dem Toren nicht geziemend.

As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

Wie der Sperling hin und her flattert, wie die Schwalbe wegfliegt, so ein unverdienter Fluch: er trifft nicht ein.

As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

Schlaff hängen die Beine des Lahmen herab: so ein Spruch im Munde der Toren.

Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

Der Faule spricht: Der Brüller ist auf dem Wege, ein Löwe inmitten der Straßen.

The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

Die Tür dreht sich in ihrer Angel: so der Faule auf seinem Bette.

As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

Hat der Faule seine Hand in die Schüssel gesteckt, beschwerlich wird es ihm, sie zu seinem Munde zurückzubringen.

The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.

Der Faule ist weiser in seinen Augen als sieben, die verständig antworten.

The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

Der ergreift einen Hund bei den Ohren, wer vorbeigehend sich über einen Streit ereifert, der ihn nichts angeht.

He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

Wie ein Wahnsinniger, der Brandgeschosse, Pfeile und Tod schleudert:

As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,

so ein Mann, der seinen Nächsten betrügt und spricht: Habe ich nicht Scherz getrieben?

So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

Wo es an Holz fehlt, erlischt das Feuer; und wo kein Ohrenbläser ist, hört der Zank auf.

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

Kohle zur Glut und Holz zum Feuer, und ein zänkischer Mann zum Schüren des Streites.

As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

Die Worte des Ohrenbläsers sind wie Leckerbissen, und sie dringen hinab in das Innerste des Leibes.

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Ein irdenes Geschirr, mit Schlackensilber überzogen: so sind feurige Lippen und ein böses Herz.

Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

Der Hasser verstellt sich mit seinen Lippen, aber in seinem Innern hegt er Trug.

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;

Wenn er seine Stimme holdselig macht, traue ihm nicht; denn sieben Greuel sind in seinem Herzen.

When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

Versteckt sich der Haß in Trug, seine Bosheit wird sich in der Versammlung enthüllen.

Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

Wer eine Grube gräbt, fällt hinein; und wer einen Stein wälzt, auf den kehrt er zurück.

Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

Eine Lügenzunge haßt diejenigen, welche sie zermalmt; und ein glatter Mund bereitet Sturz.

A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
