Proverbs 17

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.

جس گھر میں روٹی کا باسی ٹکڑا سکون کے ساتھ کھایا جائے وہ اُس گھر سے کہیں بہتر ہے جس میں لڑائی جھگڑا ہے، خواہ اُس میں کتنی شاندار ضیافت کیوں نہ ہو رہی ہو۔

A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

سمجھ دار ملازم مالک کے اُس بیٹے پر قابو پائے گا جو شرم کا باعث ہے، اور جب بھائیوں میں موروثی ملکیت تقسیم کی جائے تو اُسے بھی حصہ ملے گا۔

The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.

سونا چاندی کٹھالی میں پگھلا کر پاک صاف کی جاتی ہے، لیکن رب ہی دل کی جانچ پڑتال کرتا ہے۔

A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

بدکار شریر ہونٹوں پر دھیان اور دھوکے باز تباہ کن زبان پر توجہ دیتا ہے۔

Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.

جو غریب کا مذاق اُڑائے وہ اُس کے خالق کی تحقیر کرتا ہے، جو دوسرے کی مصیبت دیکھ کر خوش ہو جائے وہ سزا سے نہیں بچے گا۔

Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

پوتے بوڑھوں کا تاج اور والدین اپنے بچوں کے زیور ہیں۔

Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

احمق کے لئے بڑی بڑی باتیں کرنا موزوں نہیں، لیکن شریف ہونٹوں پر فریب کہیں زیادہ غیرمناسب ہے۔

A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

رشوت دینے والے کی نظر میں رشوت جادو کی مانند ہے۔ جس دروازے پر بھی کھٹکھٹائے وہ کھل جاتا ہے۔

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.

جو دوسرے کی غلطی کو درگزر کرے وہ محبت کو فروغ دیتا ہے، لیکن جو ماضی کی غلطیاں دہراتا رہے وہ قریبی دوستوں میں نفاق پیدا کرتا ہے۔

A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.

اگر سمجھ دار کو ڈانٹا جائے تو وہ خوب سیکھ لیتا ہے، لیکن اگر احمق کو سَو بار مارا جائے توبھی وہ اِتنا نہیں سیکھتا۔

An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

شریر سرکشی پر تُلا رہتا ہے، لیکن اُس کے خلاف ظالم قاصد بھیجا جائے گا۔

Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

جو احمق اپنی حماقت میں اُلجھا ہوا ہو اُس سے دریغ کر، کیونکہ اُس سے ملنے سے بہتر یہ ہے کہ تیرا اُس ریچھنی سے واسطہ پڑے جس کے بچے اُس سے چھین لئے گئے ہوں۔

Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

جو بھلائی کے عوض بُرائی کرے اُس کے گھر سے بُرائی کبھی دُور نہیں ہو گی۔

The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

لڑائی جھگڑا چھیڑنا بند میں رخنہ ڈالنے کے برابر ہے۔ اِس سے پہلے کہ مقدمہ بازی شروع ہو اُس سے باز آ۔

He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

جو بےدین کو بےقصور اور راست باز کو مجرم ٹھہرائے اُس سے رب گھن کھاتا ہے۔

Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?

احمق کے ہاتھ میں پیسوں کا کیا فائدہ ہے؟ کیا وہ حکمت خرید سکتا ہے جبکہ اُس میں عقل نہیں؟ ہرگز نہیں!

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

پڑوسی وہ ہے جو ہر وقت محبت رکھتا ہے، بھائی وہ ہے جو مصیبت میں سہارا دینے کے لئے پیدا ہوا ہے۔

A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.

جو ہاتھ ملا کر اپنے پڑوسی کا ضامن ہونے کا وعدہ کرے وہ ناسمجھ ہے۔

He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.

جو لڑائی جھگڑے سے محبت رکھے وہ گناہ سے محبت رکھتا ہے، جو اپنا دروازہ حد سے زیادہ بڑا بنائے وہ تباہی کو داخل ہونے کی دعوت دیتا ہے۔

He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

جس کا دل ٹیڑھا ہے وہ خوش حالی نہیں پائے گا، اور جس کی زبان چالاک ہے وہ مصیبت میں اُلجھ جائے گا۔

He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.

جس کے ہاں احمق بیٹا پیدا ہو جائے اُسے دُکھ پہنچتا ہے، اور عقل سے خالی بیٹا باپ کے لئے خوشی کا باعث نہیں ہوتا۔

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

خوش باش دل پورے جسم کو شفا دیتا ہے، لیکن شکستہ روح ہڈیوں کو خشک کر دیتی ہے۔

A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.

بےدین چپکے سے رشوت لے کر انصاف کی راہوں کو بگاڑ دیتا ہے۔

Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

سمجھ دار اپنی نظر کے سامنے حکمت رکھتا ہے، لیکن احمق کی نظریں دنیا کی انتہا تک آوارہ پھرتی ہیں۔

A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

احمق بیٹا باپ کے لئے رنج کا باعث اور ماں کے لئے تلخی کا سبب ہے۔

Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

بےقصور پر جرمانہ لگانا غلط ہے، اور شریف کو اُس کی دیانت داری کے سبب سے کوڑے لگانا بُرا ہے۔

He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

جو اپنی زبان کو قابو میں رکھے وہ علم و عرفان کا مالک ہے، جو ٹھنڈے دل سے بات کرے وہ سمجھ دار ہے۔

Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

اگر احمق خاموش رہے تو وہ بھی دانش مند لگتا ہے۔ جب تک وہ بات نہ کرے لوگ اُسے سمجھ دار قرار دیتے ہیں۔
