John 11

Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

Ora, estava enfermo um homem chamado Lázaro, de Betânia, aldeia de Maria e de sua irmã Marta.

(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

E Maria, cujo irmão Lázaro se achava enfermo, era a mesma que ungiu o Senhor com bálsamo, e lhe enxugou os pés com os seus cabelos.

Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

Mandaram, pois, as irmãs dizer a Jesus: Senhor, eis que está enfermo aquele quem amas.

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Jesus, porém, ao ouvir isto, disse: Esta enfermidade não é para a morte, mas para glória de Deus, para que o Filho de Deus seja glorificado por ela.

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

Ora, Jesus amava a Marta, e a sua irmã, e a Lázaro.

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Quando, pois, ouviu que ele estava enfermo, ficou ainda dois dias no lugar onde se achava.

Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.

Depois disto, disse a seus discípulos: Vamos outra vez para Judéia.

His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

Disseram-lhe seus discípulos: Rabi, ainda agora os judeus procuravam apedrejar-te, e voltas para lá?

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

Respondeu Jesus: Não são doze as horas do dia? Se alguém andar de dia, não tropeça, porque vê a luz deste mundo;

But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

mas se andar de noite, tropeça, porque nele não há luz.

These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

E, tendo assim falado, acrescentou: nosso amigo Lázaro dorme, mas vou despertá-lo do sono.

Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

Disseram-lhe, pois, seus discípulos: Senhor, se dorme, ficará bom.

Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

Mas Jesus falara da sua morte; eles, porém, entenderam que falava do repouso do sono.

Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

Então Jesus lhes disse claramente: Lázaro morreu;

And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

e, por vossa causa, me alegro de que eu lá não estivesse, para que creiais; mas vamos ter com ele.

Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Disse, pois, Tomé, chamado Dídimo, aos seus condiscípulos: Vamos nós também, para morrermos com ele.

Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

Chegando pois Jesus, encontrou-o já com quatro dias de sepultura.

Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

Ora, Betânia distava de Jerusalém cerca de quinze estádios.

And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

E muitos dos judeus tinham vindo visitar Marta e Maria, para as consolar acerca de seu irmão.

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

Marta, pois, ao saber que Jesus chegava, saiu-lhe ao encontro; Maria, porém, ficou sentada em casa.

Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Disse, pois, Marta a Jesus: Senhor, se estiveras aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido.

But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

E mesmo agora sei que tudo quanto pedires a Deus, Deus te concederá.

Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Teu irmão há de ressuscitar.

Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Disse-lhe Marta: Sei que ele há de ressuscitar na ressurreição, no último dia.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

Declarou-lhe Jesus: Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida; quem crê em mim, ainda que morra, viverá;

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

e todo aquele que vive, e crê em mim, jamais morrerá. Crês isto?

She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

Respondeu-lhe Marta: Sim, Senhor, eu creio que tu és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus, que havia de vir ao mundo.

And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

Dito isto, retirou-se e foi chamar em segredo a Maria, sua irmã, e lhe disse: O Mestre está aí, e te chama.

As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

Ela, ouvindo isto, levantou-se depressa, e foi ter com ele.

Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

Pois Jesus ainda não havia entrado na aldeia, mas estava no lugar onde Marta o encontrara.

The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

Então os judeus que estavam com Maria em casa e a consolavam, vendo-a levantar-se apressadamente e sair, seguiram-na, pensando que ia ao sepulcro para chorar ali.

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Tendo, pois, Maria chegado ao lugar onde Jesus estava, e vendo-o, lançou-se-lhe aos pés e disse: Senhor, se tu estiveras aqui, meu irmão não teria morrido.

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

Jesus, pois, vendo-a chorar, e chorarem também os judeus que com ela vinham, comoveu-se em espírito, e perturbou-se,

And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

e perguntou: Onde o pusestes? Responderam-lhe: Senhor, vem e vê.

Jesus wept.

Jesus chorou.

Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

Disseram então os judeus: Vede como o amava.

And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

Mas alguns deles disseram: Não podia ele, que abriu os olhos ao cego, fazer também que este não morreste?

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Jesus, pois, comovendo-se outra vez, profundamente, foi ao sepulcro; era uma gruta, e tinha uma pedra posta sobre ela.

Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

Disse Jesus: Tirai a pedra. Marta, irmã do morto, disse-lhe: Senhor, já cheira mal, porque está morto há quase quatro dias.

Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Não te disse que, se creres, verás a glória de Deus?

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

Tiraram, então, a pedra de onde o defunto jazia. E Jesus, levantando os olhos ao céu, disse: Pai, graças te dou, porque me ouviste.

And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Eu sabia que sempre me ouves; mas por causa da multidão que está em redor é que assim falei, para que eles creiam que tu me enviaste.

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

E, tendo dito isso, clamou em alta voz: Lázaro, vem para fora!

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Saiu aquele que estivera morto, tendo ligados os pés e as mãos com faixas, e o seu rosto envolto num lenço. Disse-lhes Jesus: Desligai-o e deixai-o ir.

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

Muitos, pois, dentre os judeus que tinham vindo visitar Maria, e que tinham visto o que Jesus fizera, creram nele.

But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

Mas alguns deles foram ter com os fariseus e contaram-lhes o que Jesus tinha feito.

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

Então os principais sacerdotes e os fariseus reuniram o sinédrio e disseram: Que faremos? Porquanto este homem vem operando muitos sinais.

If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

Se o deixarmos assim, todos crerão nele, e virão os romanos, e nos tirarão tanto o nosso lugar como a nossa nação.

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

Um deles, porém, chamado Caifás, que era sumo sacerdote naquele ano, disse-lhes: Vós nada sabeis,

Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

nem considerais que vos convém que morra um só homem pelo povo, e que não pereça a nação toda.

And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

Ora, ele não disse isso por si mesmo; mas, sendo o sumo sacerdote naquele ano, profetizou que Jesus havia de morrer pela nação,

And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

e não somente pela nação, mas também para reunir em um só corpo os filhos de Deus que estão dispersos.

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

Desde aquele dia, pois, tomaram conselho para matá-lo.

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

De sorte que Jesus já não andava publicamente entre os judeus, mas retirou-se dali para a região vizinha ao deserto, a uma cidade chamada Efraim; e ali permaneceu com seus discípulos.

And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

Ora, estava próxima a páscoa dos judeus, e muitos daquela região subiram a Jerusalém antes da páscoa, para se purificarem.

Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

Então procuravam a Jesus e, estando eles no templo, diziam uns aos outros: Que vos parece? Não virá ele à festa?

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

Ora, os principais sacerdotes e os fariseus tinham dado ordem para, se alguém soubesse onde ele estava, denunciá-lo, a fim de o prenderem.
