Proverbs 1

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

दाऊद के पुत्र और इस्राएल के राजा सुलैमान के नीतिवचन। यह शब्द इसलिये लिखे गये हैं,

To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

ताकि मनुष्य बुद्धि को पाये, अनुशासन को ग्रहण करे, जिनसे समझ भरी बातों का ज्ञान हो,

To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

ताकि मनुष्य विवेकशील, अनुशासित जीवन पाये, और धर्म—पूर्ण, न्याय—पूर्ण, पक्षपातरहित कार्य करे,

To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

सरल सीधे जन को विवेक और ज्ञान तथा युवकों को अच्छे बुरे का भेद सिखा (बता) पायें।

A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

बुद्धिमान उन्हें सुन कर निज ज्ञान बढ़ावें और समझदार व्यक्ति दिशा निर्देश पायें,

To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

ताकि मनुष्य नीतिवचन, ज्ञानी के दृष्टाँतों को और पहेली भरी बातों को समझ सकें।

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

यहोवा का भय मानना ज्ञान का आदि है किन्तु मूर्ख जन तो बुद्धि और अनुशासन को तुच्छ मानते हैं।

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

हे मेरे पुत्र, अपने पिता की शिक्षा पर ध्यान दे और अपनी माता की नसीहत को मत भूल।

For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

वे तेरा सिर सजाने को मुकुट और शोभायमान करने तेरे गले का हार बनेंगे।

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

हे मेरे पुत्र, यदि पापी तुझे बहलाने फुसलाने आयें उनकी कभी मत मानना।

If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

और यदि वे कहें, “आजा हमारे साथ! आ, हम किसी के घात में बैठे! आ निर्दोष पर छिपकर वार करें!

Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

आ, हम उन्हें जीवित ही सारे का सारा निगल जायें वैसे ही जैसे कब्र निगलती हैं। जैसे नीचे पाताल में कहीं फिसलता चला जाता है।

We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

हम सभी बहुमूल्य वस्तुयें पा जायेंगे और अपने इस लूट से घर भर लेंगे।

Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

अपने भाग्य का पासा हमारे साथ फेंक, हम एक ही बटुवे के सहभागी होंगे!”

My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

हे मेरे पुत्र, तू उनकी राहों पर मत चल, तू अपने पैर उन पर रखने से रोक।

For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

क्योंकि उनके पैर पाप करने को शीघ्र बढ़ते, वे लहू बहाने को अति गतिशील हैं।

Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

कितना व्यर्थ है, जाल का फैलाना जबकि सभी पक्षी तुझे पूरी तरह देखते हैं।

And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.

जो किसी का खून बहाने प्रतीक्षा में बैठे हैं वे अपने आप उस जाल में फँस जायेंगे!

So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

जो ऐसे बुरे लाभ के पीछे पड़े रहते हैं उन सब ही का यही अंत होता है। उन सब के प्राण हर ले जाता है; जो इस बुरे लाभ को अपनाता है।

Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

बुद्धि! तो मार्ग में ऊँचे चढ़ पुकारती है, चौराहों पर अपनी आवाज़ उठाती है।

She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

शोर भरी गलियों के नुक्कड़ पर पुकारती है, नगर के फाटक पर निज भाषण देती है:

How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

“अरे भोले लोगों! तुम कब तक अपना मोह सरल राहों से रखोगे? उपहास करनेवालों, तुम कब तक उपहासों में आनन्द लोगे? अरे मूर्खो, तुम कब तक ज्ञान से घृणा करोगे?

Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

यदि मेरी फटकार तुम पर प्रभावी होती तो मैं तुम पर अपना हृदय उंडेल देती और तुम्हें अपने सभी विचार जना देती।

Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

“किन्तु क्योंकि तुमने तो मुझको नकार दिया जब मैंने तुम्हें पुकारा, और किसी ने ध्यान न दिया, जब मैंने अपना हाथ बढ़ाया था।

But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

तुमने मेरी सब सम्मत्तियाँ उपेक्षित कीं और मेरी फटकार कभी नहीं स्वीकारीं!

I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

इसलिए, बदले में, मैं तेरे नाश पर हसूँगी। मैं उपहास करूँगी जब तेरा विनाश तुझे घेरेगा!

When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

जब विनाश तुझे वैसे ही घेरेगा जैसे भीषण बबूले सा बवण्डर घेरता है, जब विनाश जकड़ेगा, और जब विनाश तथा संकट तुझे डुबो देंगे।

Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

“तब, वे मुझको पुकारेंगे किन्तु मैं कोई भी उत्तर नहीं दूँगी। वे मुझे ढूँढते फिरेगें किन्तु नहीं पायेंगे।

For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

क्योंकि वे सदा ज्ञान से घृणा करते रहे, और उन्होंने कभी नहीं चाहा कि वे यहोवा से डरें।

They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

क्योंकि वे, मेरा उपदेश कभी नहीं धारण करेंगे, और मेरी ताड़ना का तिरस्कार करेंगे।

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

वे अपनी करनी का फल अवश्य भोगेंगे, वे अपनी योजनाओं के कुफल से अघायेंगे!

For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

“सीधों की मनमानी उन्हें ले डूबेगी, मूर्खों का आत्म सुख उन्हें नष्ट कर देगा।

But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

किन्तु जो मेरी सुनेगा वह सुरक्षित रहेगा, वह बिना किसा हानि के भय से रहित वह सदा चैन से रहेगा।”
