Proverbs 23

اگر تُو کسی حکمران کے کھانے میں شریک ہو جائے تو خوب دھیان دے کہ تُو کس کے حضور ہے۔

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

اگر تُو پیٹو ہو تو اپنے گلے پر چھری رکھ۔

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

اُس کی عمدہ چیزوں کا لالچ مت کر، کیونکہ یہ کھانا فریب دہ ہے۔

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

اپنی پوری طاقت امیر بننے میں صَرف نہ کر، اپنی حکمت ایسی کوششوں سے ضائع مت کر۔

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

ایک نظر دولت پر ڈال تو وہ اوجھل ہو جاتی ہے، اور پَر لگا کر عقاب کی طرح آسمان کی طرف اُڑ جاتی ہے۔

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

جلنے والے کی روٹی مت کھا، اُس کے لذیذ کھانوں کا لالچ نہ کر۔

Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

کیونکہ یہ گلے میں بال کی طرح ہو گا۔ وہ تجھ سے کہے گا، ”کھاؤ، پیؤ!“ لیکن اُس کا دل تیرے ساتھ نہیں ہے۔

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

جو لقمہ تُو نے کھا لیا اُس سے تجھے قَے آئے گی، اور تیری اُس سے دوستانہ باتیں ضائع ہو جائیں گی۔

The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

احمق سے بات نہ کر، کیونکہ وہ تیری دانش مند باتیں حقیر جانے گا۔

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

زمین کی جو حدود قدیم زمانے میں مقرر ہوئیں اُنہیں آگے پیچھے مت کرنا، اور یتیموں کے کھیتوں پر قبضہ نہ کر۔

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

کیونکہ اُن کا چھڑانے والا قوی ہے، وہ اُن کے حق میں خود تیرے خلاف لڑے گا۔

For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

اپنا دل تربیت کے حوالے کر اور اپنے کان علم کی باتوں پر لگا۔

Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

بچے کو تربیت سے محروم نہ رکھ، چھڑی سے اُسے سزا دینے سے وہ نہیں مرے گا۔

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

چھڑی سے اُسے سزا دے تو اُس کی جان موت سے چھوٹ جائے گی۔

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

میرے بیٹے، اگر تیرا دل دانش مند ہو تو میرا دل بھی خوش ہو گا۔

My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

مَیں اندر ہی اندر خوشی مناؤں گا جب تیرے ہونٹ دیانت دار باتیں کریں گے۔

Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

تیرا دل گناہ گاروں کو دیکھ کر کُڑھتا نہ رہے بلکہ پورے دن رب کا خوف رکھنے میں سرگرم رہے۔

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

کیونکہ تیری اُمید جاتی نہیں رہے گی بلکہ تیرا مستقبل یقیناً اچھا ہو گا۔

For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

میرے بیٹے، سن کر دانش مند ہو جا اور صحیح راہ پر اپنے دل کی راہنمائی کر۔

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

شرابی اور پیٹو سے دریغ کر،

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

کیونکہ شرابی اور پیٹو غریب ہو جائیں گے، اور کاہلی اُنہیں چیتھڑے پہنائے گی۔

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

اپنے باپ کی سن جس نے تجھے پیدا کیا، اور اپنی ماں کو حقیر نہ جان جب بوڑھی ہو جائے۔

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

سچائی خرید لے اور کبھی فروخت نہ کر، اُس میں شامل حکمت، تربیت اور سمجھ اپنا لے۔

Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

راست باز کا باپ بڑی خوشی مناتا ہے، اور دانش مند بیٹے کا والد اُس سے لطف اندوز ہوتا ہے۔

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

چنانچہ اپنے ماں باپ کے لئے خوشی کا باعث ہو، ایسی زندگی گزار کہ تیری ماں جشن منا سکے۔

Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

میرے بیٹے، اپنا دل میرے حوالے کر، تیری آنکھیں میری راہیں پسند کریں۔

My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

کیونکہ کسبی گہرا گڑھا اور زناکار عورت تنگ کنواں ہے،

For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

ڈاکو کی طرح وہ تاک لگائے بیٹھ کر مردوں میں بےوفاؤں کا اضافہ کرتی ہے۔

She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

کون آہیں بھرتا ہے؟ کون ہائے ہائے کرتا اور لڑائی جھگڑے میں ملوث رہتا ہے؟ کس کو بلاوجہ چوٹیں لگتی، کس کی آنکھیں دُھندلی سی رہتی ہیں؟

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

وہ جو رات گئے تک مَے پینے اور مسالے دار مَے سے مزہ لینے میں مصروف رہتا ہے۔

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

مَے کو تکتا نہ رہ، خواہ اُس کا سرخ رنگ کتنی خوب صورتی سے پیالے میں کیوں نہ چمکے، خواہ اُسے بڑے مزے سے کیوں نہ پیا جائے۔

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

انجام کار وہ تجھے سانپ کی طرح کاٹے گی، ناگ کی طرح ڈسے گی۔

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

تیری آنکھیں عجیب و غریب منظر دیکھیں گی اور تیرا دل بےتُکی باتیں ہکلائے گا۔

Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

تُو سمندر کے بیچ میں لیٹنے والے کی مانند ہو گا، اُس جیسا جو مستول پر چڑھ کر لیٹ گیا ہو۔

Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

تُو کہے گا، ”میری پٹائی ہوئی لیکن درد محسوس نہ ہوا، مجھے مارا گیا لیکن معلوم نہ ہوا۔ مَیں کب جاگ اُٹھوں گا تاکہ دوبارہ شراب کی طرف رُخ کر سکوں؟“

They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
