Ecclesiastes 7

اچھا نام خوشبودار تیل سے اور موت کا دن پیدائش کے دن سے بہتر ہے۔

A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

ضیافت کرنے والوں کے گھر میں جانے کی نسبت ماتم کرنے والوں کے گھر میں جانا بہتر ہے، کیونکہ ہر انسان کا انجام موت ہی ہے۔ جو زندہ ہیں وہ اِس بات پر خوب دھیان دیں۔

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

دُکھ ہنسی سے بہتر ہے، اُترا ہوا چہرہ دل کی بہتری کا باعث ہے۔

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

دانش مند کا دل ماتم کرنے والوں کے گھر میں ٹھہرتا جبکہ احمق کا دل عیش و عشرت کرنے والوں کے گھر میں ٹک جاتا ہے۔

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

احمقوں کے گیت سننے کی نسبت دانش مند کی جھڑکیوں پر دھیان دینا بہتر ہے۔

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

احمق کے قہقہے دیگچی تلے چٹخنے والے کانٹوں کی آگ کی مانند ہیں۔ یہ بھی باطل ہی ہے۔

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

ناروا نفع دانش مند کو احمق بنا دیتا، رشوت دل کو بگاڑ دیتی ہے۔

Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

کسی معاملے کا انجام اُس کی ابتدا سے بہتر ہے، صبر کرنا مغرور ہونے سے بہتر ہے۔

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

غصہ کرنے میں جلدی نہ کر، کیونکہ غصہ احمقوں کی گود میں ہی آرام کرتا ہے۔

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

یہ نہ پوچھ کہ آج کی نسبت پرانا زمانہ بہتر کیوں تھا، کیونکہ یہ حکمت کی بات نہیں۔

Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.

اگر حکمت کے علاوہ میراث میں ملکیت بھی مل جائے تو یہ اچھی بات ہے، یہ اُن کے لئے سودمند ہے جو سورج دیکھتے ہیں۔

Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.

کیونکہ حکمت پیسوں کی طرح پناہ دیتی ہے، لیکن حکمت کا خاص فائدہ یہ ہے کہ وہ اپنے مالک کی جان بچائے رکھتی ہے۔

For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

اللہ کے کام کا ملاحظہ کر۔ جو کچھ اُس نے پیچ دار بنایا کون اُسے سلجھا سکتا ہے؟

Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

خوشی کے دن خوش ہو، لیکن مصیبت کے دن خیال رکھ کہ اللہ نے یہ دن بھی بنایا اور وہ بھی اِس لئے کہ انسان اپنے مستقبل کے بارے میں کچھ معلوم نہ کر سکے۔

In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

اپنی عبث زندگی کے دوران مَیں نے دو باتیں دیکھی ہیں۔ ایک طرف راست باز اپنی راست بازی کے باوجود تباہ ہو جاتا جبکہ دوسری طرف بےدین اپنی بےدینی کے باوجود عمر رسیدہ ہو جاتا ہے۔

All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

نہ حد سے زیادہ راست بازی دکھا، نہ حد سے زیادہ دانش مندی۔ اپنے آپ کو تباہ کرنے کی کیا ضرورت ہے؟

Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

نہ حد سے زیادہ بےدینی، نہ حد سے زیادہ حماقت دکھا۔ مقررہ وقت سے پہلے مرنے کی کیا ضرورت ہے؟

Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

اچھا ہے کہ تُو یہ بات تھامے رکھے اور دوسری بھی نہ چھوڑے۔ جو اللہ کا خوف مانے وہ دونوں خطروں سے بچ نکلے گا۔

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

حکمت دانش مند کو شہر کے دس حکمرانوں سے زیادہ طاقت ور بنا دیتی ہے۔

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

دنیا میں کوئی بھی انسان اِتنا راست باز نہیں کہ ہمیشہ اچھا کام کرے اور کبھی گناہ نہ کرے۔

For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

لوگوں کی ہر بات پر دھیان نہ دے، ایسا نہ ہو کہ تُو نوکر کی لعنت بھی سن لے جو وہ تجھ پر کرتا ہے۔

Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:

کیونکہ دل میں تُو جانتا ہے کہ تُو نے خود متعدد بار دوسروں پر لعنت بھیجی ہے۔

For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

حکمت کے ذریعے مَیں نے اِن تمام باتوں کی جانچ پڑتال کی۔ مَیں بولا، ”مَیں دانش مند بننا چاہتا ہوں،“ لیکن حکمت مجھ سے دُور رہی۔

All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

جو کچھ موجود ہے وہ دُور اور نہایت گہرا ہے۔ کون اُس کی تہہ تک پہنچ سکتا ہے؟

That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

چنانچہ مَیں رُخ بدل کر پورے دھیان سے اِس کی تحقیق و تفتیش کرنے لگا کہ حکمت اور مختلف باتوں کے صحیح نتائج کیا ہیں۔ نیز، مَیں بےدینی کی حماقت اور بےہودگی کی دیوانگی معلوم کرنا چاہتا تھا۔

I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:

مجھے معلوم ہوا کہ موت سے کہیں تلخ وہ عورت ہے جو پھندا ہے، جس کا دل جال اور ہاتھ زنجیریں ہیں۔ جو آدمی اللہ کو منظور ہو وہ بچ نکلے گا، لیکن گناہ گار اُس کے جال میں اُلجھ جائے گا۔

And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

واعظ فرماتا ہے، ”یہ سب کچھ مجھے معلوم ہوا جب مَیں نے مختلف باتیں ایک دوسرے کے ساتھ منسلک کیں تاکہ صحیح نتائج تک پہنچوں۔

Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:

لیکن جسے مَیں ڈھونڈتا رہا وہ نہ ملا۔ ہزار افراد میں سے مجھے صرف ایک ہی دیانت دار مرد ملا، لیکن ایک بھی دیانت دار عورت نہیں ۔

Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

مجھے صرف اِتنا ہی معلوم ہوا کہ گو اللہ نے انسانوں کو دیانت دار بنایا، لیکن وہ کئی قسم کی چالاکیاں ڈھونڈ نکالتے ہیں۔“

Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
