Job 3

After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

Depois disso abriu Jó a sua boca, e amaldiçoou o seu dia.

And Job spake, and said,

E Jó falou, dizendo:

Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

Pereça o dia em que nasci, e a noite que se disse: Foi concebido um homem!

Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

Converta-se aquele dia em trevas; e Deus, lá de cima, não tenha cuidado dele, nem resplandeça sobre ele a luz.

Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

Reclamem-no para si as trevas e a sombra da morte; habitem sobre ele nuvens; espante-o tudo o que escurece o dia.

As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

Quanto àquela noite, dela se apodere a escuridão; e não se regozije ela entre os dias do ano; e não entre no número dos meses.

Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.

Ah! Seja estéril aquela noite; que nela não entre voz de regozijo.

Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.

Amaldiçoem-na aqueles que amaldiçoam os dias, que são peritos em suscitar o leviatã.

Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

As estrelas da alva se lhe escureçam; espere ela em vão a luz, e não veja as pálpebras da manhã;

Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.

porquanto não fechou as portas do ventre de minha mãe, nem escondeu dos meus olhos a aflição.

Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

Por que não morri ao nascer? Por que não expirei ao vir à luz?

Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

Por que me receberam os joelhos? E por que os seios, para que eu mamasse?

For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

Pois agora eu estaria deitado e quieto; teria dormido e estaria em repouso,

With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;

com os reis e conselheiros da terra, que reedificavam ruínas para si,

Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:

ou com os príncipes que tinham ouro, que enchiam as suas casas de prata;

Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

ou, como aborto oculto, eu não teria existido, como as crianças que nunca viram a luz.

There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.

Ali os ímpios cessam de perturbar; e ali repousam os cansados.

There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.

Ali os presos descansam juntos, e não ouvem a voz do exator.

The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

O pequeno e o grande ali estão e o servo está livre de seu senhor.

Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

Por que se concede luz ao aflito, e vida aos amargurados de alma;

Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;

que anelam pela morte sem que ela venha, e cavam em procura dela mais do que de tesouros escondidos;

Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

que muito se regozijam e exultam, quando acham a sepultura?

Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

Sim, por que se concede luz ao homem cujo caminho está escondido, e a quem Deus cercou de todos os lados?

For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

Pois em lugar de meu pão vem o meu suspiro, e os meus gemidos se derramam como água.

For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

Porque aquilo que temo me sobrevém, e o que receio me acontece.

I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

Não tenho repouso, nem sossego, nem descanso; mas vem a perturbação.
