Proverbs 23

जब तू किसी अधिकारी के साथ भोजन पर बैठे तो इसका ध्यान रख, कि कौन तेरे सामने है।

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

यदि तू पेटू है तो खाने पर नियन्त्रण रख।

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

उसके पकवानों की लालसा मत कर क्योंकि वह भोजन तो कपटपूर्ण होता है।

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

धनवान बनने का काम करके निज को मत थका। तू संयम दिखाने को, बुद्धि अपना ले।

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

ये धन सम्पत्तियाँ देखते ही देखते लुप्त हो जायेंगी निश्चय ही अपने पंखों को फैलाकर वे गरूड़ के समान आकाश में उड़ जायेंगी।

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

ऐसे मनुष्य का जो सूम भोजन होता है तू मत कर; तू उसके पकवानों को मत ललचा।

Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

क्योंकि वह ऐसा मनुष्य है जो मन में हरदम उसके मूल्य का हिसाब लगाता रहता है; तुझसे तो वह कहता — “तुम खाओ और पियो” किन्तु वह मन से तेरे साथ नहीं है।

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

जो कुछ थोड़ा बहुत तू उसका खा चुका है, तुझको तो वह भी उलटना पड़ेगा और वे तेरे कहे हुएआदर पूर्ण वचन व्यर्थ चले जायेंगे।

The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

तू मूर्ख के साथ बातचीत मत कर, क्योंकि वह तेरे विवेकपूर्ण वचनों से घृणा ही करेगा।

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

पुरानी सम्पत्ति की सीमा जो चली आ रही हो, उसको कभी मत हड़प। ऐसी जमीन को जो किसी अनाथ की हो।

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

क्योंकि उनका संरक्षक सामर्थ्यवान है, तेरे विरुद्ध उनका मुकदमा वह लड़ेगा।

For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

तू अपना मन सीख की बातों में लगा। तू ज्ञानपूर्ण वचनों पर कान दे।

Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

तू किसी बच्चे को अनुशासित करने से कभी मत रूक यदि तू कभी उसे छड़ी से दण्ड देगा तो वह इससे कभी नहीं मरेगा।

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

तू छड़ी से पीट उसे और उसका जीवन नरक से बचा ले।

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

हे मेरे पुत्र, यदि तेरा मन विवेकपूर्ण रहता है तो मेरा मन भी आनन्दपूर्ण रहेगा।

My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

और तेरे होंठ जब जो उचित बोलते हैं, उससे मेरा अर्न्तमन खिल उठता है।

Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

तू अपने मन को पापपूर्ण व्यक्तियों से ईर्ष्या मत करने दे, किन्तु तू यहोवा से डरने का जितना प्रयत्न कर सके, कर।

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

एक आशा है, जो सदा बनी रहती है और वह आशा कभी नहीं मरती।

For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

मेरे पुत्र, सुन! और विवेकी बनजा और अपनी मन को नेकी की राह पर चला।

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

तू उनके साथ मत रह जो बहुत पियक्कड़ हैं, अथवा ऐसे, जो ठूंस—ठूंस माँस खाते हैं।

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

क्योंकि ये पियक्कड़ और ये पेटू दरिद्र हो जायेंगे, और यह उनकी खुमारी, उन्हें चिथड़े पहनायेगी।

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

अपने पिता की सुन जिसने तुझे जीवन दिया है, अपनी माता का निरादर मत कर जब वह वृद्ध हो जाये।

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

वह वस्तु सत्य है, तू इसको किसी भी मोल पर खरीद ले। ऐसे ही विवेक, अनुशासन और समझ भी प्राप्त कर; तू इनको कभी भी किसी मोल पर मत बेच।

Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

नेक जन का पिता महा आनन्दित रहता और जिसका पुत्र विवेक पूर्ण होता है वह उसमें ही हर्षित रहता है।

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

इसलिये तेरी माता और तेरे पिता को आनन्द प्राप्त करने दे और जिसने तुझ को जन्म दिया, उसको हर्ष मिलता ही रहे।

Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

मेरे पुत्र, मुझमें मन लगा और तेरी आँखें मुझ पर टिकी रहें। मुझे आदर्श मान।

My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

क्योंकि एक वेश्या गहन गर्त होती है। और मन मौजी पत्नी एक संकरा कुँआ।

For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

वह घात में रहती है जैसे कोई डाकू और वह लोगों में विश्वास हीनों की संख्या बढ़ाती है।

She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

कौन विपत्ति में है कौन दुःख में पड़ा है कौन झगड़े—टंटों में किसकी शिकायतें हैं कौन व्यर्थ चकना चूर किसकी आँखें लाल हैं वे जो निरन्तर दाखमधु पीते रहते हैं और जिसमें मिश्रित मधु की ललक होती है!

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

कौन विपत्ति में है कौन दुःख में पड़ा है कौन झगड़े—टंटों में किसकी शिकायतें हैं कौन व्यर्थ चकना चूर किसकी आँखें लाल हैं वे जो निरन्तर दाखमधु पीते रहते हैं और जिसमें मिश्रित मधु की ललक होती है!

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

जब दाखमधु लाल हो, और प्यालें में झिलमिलाती हो और धीरे—धीरे डाली जा रही हो, उसको ललचायी आँखों से मत देखो।

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

सर्प के समान वह डसती, अन्त में जहर भर देती है जैसे नाग भर देता है।

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

तेरी आँखों में विचित्र दृष्य तैरने लगेगें, तेरा मन उल्टी—सीधी बातों में उलझेगा।

Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

तू ऐसा हो जायेगा, जैसे उफनते सागर पर सो रहा हो और जैसे मस्तूल की शिखर लेटा हो।

Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

तू कहेगा, “उन्होंने मुझे मारा पर मुझे तो लगा ही नहीं। उन्होंने मुझे पीटा, पर मुझ को पता ही नहीं। मुझ से आता नहीं मुझे उठा दो और मुझे पीने को और दो।”

They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
