Proverbs 13

فرزند عاقل تأدیب والدین خود را می‌پذیرد، امّا شخص خودخواه از پذیرفتن آن خودداری می‌کند.

A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

شخص نیک به‌خاطر کارهای نیک خود پاداش می‌گیرد، ولی شخص بداندیش فقط تشنهٔ ظلم است.

A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.

هر که زبان خود را نگه دارد، جان خود را حفظ می‌کند، امّا کسی‌که نسنجیده سخن بگوید، خود را هلاک می‌کند.

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

آدم تنبل آنچه را که آرزو می‌کند به دست نمی‌آورد، امّا شخص زحمتکش کامیاب می‌شود.

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

شخص درستکار از دروغ گفتن نفرت دارد، امّا آدم شریر رسوا و خوار می‌شود.

A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

صداقتِ مردم درستکار، آنان را حفظ می‌کند، ولی شرارتِ اشخاص بدکار، آنها را به نابودی می‌کشاند.

Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

بعضی اشخاص، درحالی‌که چیزی ندارند، وانمود می‌کنند که ثروتمند هستند، کسانی هم هستند که خود را فقیر نشان می‌دهند، امّا صاحب ثروت هنگفتی می‌باشند.

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

ثروت شخص دولتمند صرف حفظ جان او می‌شود، امّا کسی فقیر را تهدید نمی‌کند.

The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.

زندگی شخص نیک مانند چراغ نورانی می‌درخشد، امّا زندگی گناهکاران مثل چراغی است که در حال خاموشی می‌باشد.

The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

تکبّر باعث نزاع می‌شود، ولی شخص دانا نصیحت را می‌پذیرد.

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

ثروتی که به آسانی به دست بیاید، بزودی از بین می‌رود، امّا دارایی‌ای که با کار و کوشش جمع می‌شود، به تدریج زیاد می‌گردد.

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

آرزویی که انجام آن به تعویق افتاده باشد، دل را بیمار می‌کند، امّا مرادی که برآورده می‌شود، خوشی و حیات می‌بخشد.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

هر که نصیحت را خوار شمارد، بی‌سزا نمی‌ماند؛ امّا کسی‌که از آن پیروی می‌کند، پاداش می‌یابد.

Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

تعلیم شخص دانا چشمه حیات است و انسان را از دام مرگ می‌رهاند.

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

دانایی انسان را محترم می‌سازد، ولی نتیجهٔ خیانت هلاکت است.

Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

آدم دانا سنجیده عمل می‌کند، امّا شخص نادان حماقت خود را نشان می‌دهد.

Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.

قاصدی که مورد اعتماد نباشد، باعث گرفتاری می‌شود، امّا پیک امین موجب آرامش می‌گردد.

A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

فقر و رسوایی دامنگیر کسی می‌شود که تأدیب را نمی‌پذیرد، ولی شخصی که آن را قبول می‌کند، محترم شمرده می‌شود.

Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

رسیدن به آرزو لذّت بخش است، امّا اشخاص نادان در پی آرزوهای پلید خود هستند و نمی‌خواهند از آنها دست بردارند.

The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

با اشخاص دانا معاشرت کن و دانا خواهی شد، با مردم نادان همنشین شو و زیان خواهی دید.

He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

بلا دامنگیر گناهکاران می‌شود، امّا چیزهای خوب نصیب مردم نیک می‌گردد.

Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.

شخص نیک حتّی برای نوه‌های خود میراث بجا می‌گذارد، امّا ثروتی که گناهکاران اندوخته‌اند، به مردم درستکار می‌رسد.

A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

زمین شخص فقیر ممکن است محصول فراوان بدهد، ولی مردم ظالم آن را از او می‌ربایند.

Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.

کسی‌که فرزند خود را تنبیه نمی‌کند، او را دوست ندارد؛ امّا کسی‌که فرزند خود را دوست دارد، از تأدیب او کوتاهی نمی‌کند.

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

شخص درستکار از خوراکی که دارد می‌خورد و سیر می‌شود، ولی آدم بدکار گرسنگی می‌کشد.

The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.
