Psalms 49

Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:

(Către mai marele cîntăreţilor. Un psalm al fiilor lui Core.) Ascultaţi lucrul acesta, toate popoarele, luaţi aminte, toţi locuitorii lumii:

Both low and high, rich and poor, together.

mici şi mari, bogaţi şi săraci!

My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

Gura mea va vorbi cuvinte înţelepte, şi inima mea are gînduri pline de judecată.

I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

Eu îmi plec urechea la pildele care îmi sînt însuflate, îmi încep cîntarea în sunetul arfei.

Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

Pentru ce să mă tem în zilele nenorocirii, cînd mă înconjoară nelegiuirea protivnicilor mei?

They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

Ei se încred în avuţiile lor, şi se fălesc cu bogăţia lor cea mare.

None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

Dar nu pot să se răscumpere unul pe altul, nici să dea lui Dumnezeu preţul răscumpărării.

(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

Răscumpărarea sufletului lor este aşa de scumpă, că nu se va face niciodată.

That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

Nu vor trăi pe vecie, nu pot să nu vadă mormîntul.

For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.

Da, îl vor vedea: căci înţelepţii mor, nebunul şi prostul deopotrivă pier, şi lasă altora avuţiile lor.

Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

Ei îşi închipuiesc că vecinice le vor fi casele, că locuinţele lor vor dăinui din veac în veac, ei, cari dau numele lor la ţări întregi.

Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

Dar omul pus în cinste nu dăinuieşte, ci este ca dobitoacele cari se taie.

This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

Iată ce soartă au ei, cei plini de atîta încredere, precum şi cei ce îi urmează, cărora le plac cuvintele lor. -

Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

Sînt duşi ca o turmă în locuinţa morţilor, îi paşte moartea, şi în curînd oamenii fără prihană îi calcă în picioare: li se duce frumuseţa, şi locuinţa morţilor le este locaşul.

But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

Dar mie Dumnezeu îmi va scăpa sufletul din locuinţa morţilor, căci mă va lua supt ocrotirea Lui. -

Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

Nu te teme cînd se îmbogăţeşte cineva, şi cînd i se înmulţesc vistieriile casei;

For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.

căci nu ia nimic cu el cînd moare: vistieriile lui nu se pogoară după el.

Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.

Să se tot creadă omul fericit în viaţă, să se tot laude cu bucuriile pe cari şi le face,

He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.

căci tot în locuinţa părinţilor săi va merge, şi nu va mai vedea lumina niciodată.

Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

Omul pus în cinste, şi fără pricepere, este ca dobitoacele pe cari le tai.
