Exodus 21

«این احکام را به بنی‌اسرائیل بگو:

Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them.

اگر یک غلام عبرانی بخری، باید مدّت شش سال برای تو خدمت کند و در سال هفتم بدون پرداخت چیزی آزاد شود.

If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

اگر موقعی که غلام تو شد مجرّد بود، نباید موقع رفتن از نزد تو همسری با خود ببرد. امّا اگر موقعی که غلام تو شد، متاهل بود، می‌تواند همسرش را هم با خود ببرد.

If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.

اگر ارباب او برایش زن گرفته و از آن زن صاحب پسران و دخترانی شده باشد، آن زن و فرزندان متعلّق به ارباب می‌باشند و آن غلام باید تنها از آنجا برود.

If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.

امّا اگر آن غلام بگوید ارباب و زن و فرزندانم را دوست دارم و نمی‌خواهم آزاد بشوم،

And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:

اربابش او را به محلی که عبادت می‌کنند ببرد و در آنجا در مقابل در یا چهارچوب، گوش او را با درفش سوراخ کند. در آن صورت آن غلام تا آخر عمرش متعلّق به آن ارباب خواهد بود.

Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.

«اگر کسی دختر خود را به عنوان کنیز بفروشد، آن دختر مثل غلامان آزاد نشود.

And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.

اگر کسی دختری را بخرد تا با او ازدواج کند ولی بعداً از او خوشش نیاید، آنگاه می‌باید به پدرش بازفروخته شود و ارباب او حق ندارد وی را به بیگانگان بفروشد. زیرا به او خیانت کرده است.

If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.

اگر کسی کنیزی بخرد تا او را به پسرش بدهد، باید مطابق رسومی‌ که برای دختران آزاد مرسوم است با او رفتار کند.

And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.

اگر زن دیگری بگیرد باید همان غذا و لباس و معاشرتی را که قبلاً با زن اول داشته حفظ کند.

If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.

اگر این سه چیز را انجام ندهد، باید او را بدون قیمت آزاد کند.

And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.

«هرکس که کسی را بزند و او را بكشد، باید کشته شود.

He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.

امّا اگر تصادفی بوده و او قصد کشتن او را نداشته، بلکه خواست خدا بوده است، جایی را معیّن می‌کنم که به آنجا فرار کند.

And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee.

ولی اگر کسی خشمگین شده به عمد شخص دیگری را بکشد، او باید کشته شود، حتّی اگر به قربانگاه من پناه ببرد.

But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.

«کسی‌که پدر یا مادر خود را بزند باید کشته شود.

And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.

«کسی‌که شخصی را بدزد تا بفروشد یا به عنوان غلام نزد خود نگه دارد، باید کشته شود.

And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

«کسی‌که پدر یا مادر خود را لعنت کند باید کشته شود.

And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

«اگر موقع دعوا، یکی از دو طرف، دیگری را با سنگ یا مشت بزند، به طوری که او نمیرد ولی بستری شود

And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed:

و بعد بتواند با عصا راه برود، کسی‌که او را زده بی‌گناه است. امّا باید غرامت بیکاری و مخارج معالجه او را بپردازد.

If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.

«اگر کسی غلام یا کنیز خود را با عصا بزند به طوری که در همان وقت بمیرد باید مجازات شود.

And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished.

ولی اگر یکی دو روز بعد بمیرد، مجازات نشود؛ چون آن غلام یا کنیز جز دارایی او بوده و همین ضرر برای او کافی است.

Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.

«اگر در موقع دعوا زن حامله‌ای را بزنند و او بچّه‌اش را بیندازد ولی صدمهٔ دیگری به او وارد نشود، کسی‌که او را زده، باید جریمه‌ای را که شوهر آن زن معیّن می‌کند در مقابل قاضی بپردازد.

If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

امّا اگر صدمهٔ دیگری وارد شود، در آن صورت جان به عوض جان،

And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,

چشم به عوض چشم، دندان به عوض دندان، دست به عوض دست، پا به عوض پا،

Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

داغ به عوض داغ، زخم به عوض زخم و لطمه به عوض لطمه.

Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

«اگر کسی غلام یا کنیز خود را طوری بزند که چشمش از بین برود، او را در عوض چشمش آزاد کند.

And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake.

اگر دندان او را بشکند، او را در عوض دندانش آزاد کند.

And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.

«اگر گاو نری با شاخ خود مرد یا زنی را بکشد، آن گاو نر را سنگسار کنند و گوشتش را هم نخورند. امّا صاحبش مجازات نشود.

If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.

امّا اگر آن گاو قبلاً هم شاخ می‌زده و صاحبش می‌دانسته و با وجود این آن گاو را نگه داشته و آن گاو مرد یا زنی را کشته ‌است، گاو را سنگسار کنند و صاحبش را نیز بکشند.

But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.

امّا اگر جریمه‌ای معیّن کنند، او باید جریمه را بپردازد و جان خود را خلاص کند.

If there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him.

اگر گاو دختر یا پسری را بکشد همین قانون اجرا می‌شود.

Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him.

اگر گاو غلام یا کنیزی را بکشد، صاحبش باید سی تکه نقره به عنوان جریمه به صاحب غلام یا کنیز بپردازد و گاو را نیز سنگسار کنند.

If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

«اگر کسی روی چاهی را باز کند و یا چاهی بکند و روی آن را نپوشاند و گاو یا الاغی در آن چاه بیفتد،

And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein;

صاحب چاه باید یا عوض آن را بدهد یا جریمه‌اش را بپردازد و لاشهٔ حیوان را برای خودش بردارد.

The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his.

اگر گاو کسی، گاو همسایه را بزند و آن گاو بمیرد، گاو زنده را بفروشند و قیمت آن را با هم تقسیم کنند و لاشهٔ گاو مرده را نیز بین خود تقسیم نمایند.

And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; and the dead ox also they shall divide.

امّا اگر معلوم شود که آن گاو قبلاً شاخ می‌زده و صاحبش او را محافظت نکرده است، باید گاو زنده را به عوض گاو بدهد و لاشهٔ گاو مرده را برای خود بردارد.

Or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in time past, and his owner hath not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own.
