Ecclesiastes 10

Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.

مری ہوئی مکھیاں خوشبودار تیل خراب کرتی ہیں، اور حکمت اور عزت کی نسبت تھوڑی سی حماقت کا زیادہ اثر ہوتا ہے۔

A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.

دانش مند کا دل صحیح راہ چن لیتا ہے جبکہ احمق کا دل غلط راہ پر آ جاتا ہے۔

Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

راستے پر چلتے وقت بھی احمق سمجھ سے خالی ہے، جس سے بھی ملے اُسے بتاتا ہے کہ وہ بےوقوف ہے ۔

If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.

اگر حکمران تجھ سے ناراض ہو جائے تو اپنی جگہ مت چھوڑ، کیونکہ پُرسکون رویہ بڑی بڑی غلطیاں دُور کر دیتا ہے۔

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

مجھے سورج تلے ایک ایسی بُری بات نظر آئی جو اکثر حکمرانوں سے سرزد ہوتی ہے۔

Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.

احمق کو بڑے عُہدوں پر فائز کیا جاتا ہے جبکہ امیر چھوٹے عُہدوں پر ہی رہتے ہیں۔

I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

مَیں نے غلاموں کو گھوڑے پر سوار اور حکمرانوں کو غلاموں کی طرح پیدل چلتے دیکھا ہے۔

He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

جو گڑھا کھودے وہ خود اُس میں گر سکتا ہے، جو دیوار گرا دے ہو سکتا ہے کہ سانپ اُسے ڈسے۔

Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.

جو کان سے پتھر نکالے اُسے چوٹ لگ سکتی ہے، جو لکڑی چیر ڈالے وہ زخمی ہو جانے کے خطرے میں ہے۔

If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

اگر کلہاڑی کُند ہو اور کوئی اُسے تیز نہ کرے تو زیادہ طاقت درکار ہے۔ لہٰذا حکمت کو صحیح طور سے عمل میں لا، تب ہی کامیابی حاصل ہو گی۔

Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.

اگر اِس سے پہلے کہ سپیرا سانپ پر قابو پائے وہ اُسے ڈسے تو پھر سپیرا ہونے کا کیا فائدہ؟

The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

دانش مند اپنے منہ کی باتوں سے دوسروں کی مہربانی حاصل کرتا ہے، لیکن احمق کے اپنے ہی ہونٹ اُسے ہڑپ کر لیتے ہیں۔

The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

اُس کا بیان احمقانہ باتوں سے شروع اور خطرناک بےوقوفیوں سے ختم ہوتا ہے۔

A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

ایسا شخص باتیں کرنے سے باز نہیں آتا، گو انسان مستقبل کے بارے میں کچھ نہیں جانتا۔ کون اُسے بتا سکتا ہے کہ اُس کے بعد کیا کچھ ہو گا؟

The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.

احمق کا کام اُسے تھکا دیتا ہے، اور وہ شہر کا راستہ بھی نہیں جانتا۔

Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

اُس ملک پر افسوس جس کا بادشاہ بچہ ہے اور جس کے بزرگ صبح ہی ضیافت کرنے لگتے ہیں۔

Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

مبارک ہے وہ ملک جس کا بادشاہ شریف ہے اور جس کے بزرگ نشے میں دُھت نہیں رہتے بلکہ مناسب وقت پر اور نظم و ضبط کے ساتھ کھانا کھاتے ہیں۔

By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.

جو سُست ہے اُس کے گھر کے شہتیر جھکنے لگتے ہیں، جس کے ہاتھ ڈھیلے ہیں اُس کی چھت سے پانی ٹپکنے لگتا ہے۔

A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.

ضیافت کرنے سے ہنسی خوشی اور مَے پینے سے زندہ دلی پیدا ہوتی ہے، لیکن پیسہ ہی سب کچھ مہیا کرتا ہے۔

Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

خیالوں میں بھی بادشاہ پر لعنت نہ کر، اپنے سونے کے کمرے میں بھی امیر پر لعنت نہ بھیج، ایسا نہ ہو کہ کوئی پرندہ تیرے الفاظ لے کر اُس تک پہنچائے۔
