Proverbs 27

Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

कल के विषय में कोई बड़ा बोल मत बोलो। कौन जानता है कल क्या कुछ घटने को है।

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

अपने ही मुँह से अपनी बड़ाई मत करो दूसरों को तुम्हारी प्रशंसा करने दो।

A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both.

कठिन है पत्थर ढोना, और ढोना रेत का, किन्तु इन दोनों से कहीं अधिक कठिन है मूर्ख के द्वारा उपजाया गया कष्ट।

Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

क्रोध निर्दय और दर्दम्य होता है। वह नाश कर देता है। किन्तु ईर्ष्या बहुत ही बुरी है।

Open rebuke is better than secret love.

छिपे हुए प्रेम से, खुली घुड़की उत्तम है।

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

हो सकता है मित्र कभी दुःखी करें, किन्तु ये उसका लक्ष्य नहीं है। इससे शत्रु भिन्न है। वह चाहे तुम पर दया करे किन्तु वह तुम्हें हानि पहुँचाना चाहता है।

The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

पेट भरजाने पर शहद भी नहीं भाता किन्तु भूख में तो हर चीज भाती है।

As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

अपना घर छोड़कर भटकता मनुष्य ऐसा, जैसे कोई चिड़िया भटकी निज घोंसले से।

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

इत्र और सुगंधित धूप मन को आनन्द से भरते हैं और मित्र की सच्ची सम्मति सेमन उल्लास से भर जाता है।

Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

अपने मित्र को मत भूलो न ही अपने पिता के मित्र को। और विपत्ती में सहायता के लिये दूर अपने भाई के घर मत जाओ। दूर के भाई से पास का पड़ोसी अच्छा है।

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.

हे मेरे पुत्र, तू बुद्धिमान बन जा और मेरा मन आनन्द से भर दे। ताकि मेरे साथ जो घृणा से व्यवहार करे, मैं उसको उत्तर दे सकूँ।

A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

विपत्ति को आते देखकर बुद्धिमान जन दूर हट जाते हैं, किन्तु मूर्खजन बिना राह बदले चलते रहते हैं और फंस जाते हैं।

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

जो किसी पराये पुरूष का जमानत भरता है उसे अपने वस्त्र भी खोना पड़ेगा।

He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

ऊँचे स्वर में “सुप्रभात” कह कर के अलख सवेरे अपने पड़ोसी को जगाया मत कर। वह एक शाप के रूप में झेलेगा आर्शीवाद में नहीं।

A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

झगड़ालू पत्नी होती है ऐसी जैसी दुर्दिन की निरन्तर वर्षा।

Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.

रोकना उसको होता है वैसा ही जैसे कोई रोके पवन को और पकड़े मुट्ठी में तेल को।

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

जैसे धार धरता है लोहे से लोहा, वैसी ही जन एक दूसरे की सीख से सुधरते हैं।

Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

जो कोई अंजीर का पेड़ सिंचता है, वह उसका फल खाता है। वैसे ही जो निज स्वामी की सेवा करता, वह आदर पा लेता है।

As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.

जैसे जल मुखड़े को प्रतिबिम्बित करता है, वैसे ही हृदय मनुष्य को प्रतिबिम्बित करता है।

Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

मृत्यु और महानाश कभी तृप्त नहीं होते और मनुष्य की आँखें भी तृप्त नहीं होती।

As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.

चाँदी और सोने को भट्टी—कुठाली में परख लिया जाता है। वैसे ही मनुष्य उस प्रशंसा से परखा जाता है जो वह पाता है।

Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

तू किसी मूर्ख को चूने में पीस—चाहे जितना महीन करे और उसे पीस कर अनाज सा बना देवे उसका चूर्ण किन्तु उसकी मूर्खता को, कभी भी उससे तू दूर न कर पायेगा।

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.

अपने रेवड़ की हालत तू निश्चित जानता है। अपने रेवड़ की ध्यान से देखभाल कर।

For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?

क्योंकि धन दौलत तो टिकाऊ नहीं होते हैं। यह राजमुकुट पीढ़ी—पीढ़ी तक बना नहीं रहता है।

The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.

जब चारा कट जाता है, तो नई घास उग आती है। वह घास पहाड़ियों पर से फिर इकट्ठी कर ली जाती है।

The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.

तब तब ये मेमनें ही तुझे वस्त्र देंगे और ये बकरियाँ खेतों की खरीद का मूल्य बनेगीं।

And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.

तेरे परिवार को, तेरे दास दासियों को और तेरे अपने लिये भरपूर बकरी का दूध होगा।
