Job 35

Elihu antwoordde verder, en zeide:

Elihu spake moreover, and said,

Houdt gij dat voor recht, dat gij gezegd hebt: Mijn gerechtigheid is meerder dan Gods?

Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's?

Want gij hebt gezegd: Wat zou zij u baten? Wat meer voordeel zal ik daarmede doen, dan met mijn zonde?

For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?

Ik zal u antwoord geven, en uw vrienden met u.

I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.

Bemerk den hemel en zie; en aanschouw de bovenste wolken, zij zijn hoger dan gij.

Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou.

Indien gij zondigt, wat bedrijft gij tegen Hem? Indien uw overtredingen menigvuldig zijn, wat doet gij Hem?

If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?

Indien gij rechtvaardig zijt, wat geeft gij Hem, of wat ontvangt Hij uit uw hand?

If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?

Uw goddeloosheid zou zijn tegen een man, gelijk gij zijt, en uw gerechtigheid voor eens mensen kind.

Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man.

Vanwege hun grootheid doen zij de onderdrukten roepen; zij schreeuwen vanwege den arm der groten.

By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.

Maar niemand zegt: Waar is God, mijn Maker, die de psalmen geeft in den nacht?

But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;

Die ons geleerder maakt dan de beesten der aarde, en ons wijzer maakt dan het gevogelte des hemels?

Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

Daar roepen zij; maar Hij antwoordt niet, vanwege den hoogmoed der bozen.

There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.

Gewisselijk zal God de ijdelheid niet verhoren, en de Almachtige zal die niet aanschouwen.

Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.

Dat gij ook gezegd hebt: Gij zult Hem niet aanschouwen; er is nochtans gericht voor Zijn aangezicht, wacht gij dan op Hem.

Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.

Maar nu, dewijl het niets is, dat Zijn toorn Job bezocht heeft, en Hij hem niet zeer in overvloed doorkend heeft;

But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity:

Zo heeft Job in ijdelheid zijn mond geopend, en zonder wetenschap woorden vermenigvuldigd.

Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.
