Acts 19

Medan Apollos var i Korint, kom Paulus, sedan han hade farit genom de övre delarna av landet, ned till Efesus. Där träffade han några lärjungar.Apg. 18,21, 24 f.

And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

Och han frågade dessa: »Undfingen I helig ande, när I kommen till tro?» De svarade honom: »Nej, vi hava icke ens hört att helig ande är given.»Joh. 7,39. Apg. 2,38. 10,44 f.

He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

Han frågade: »Vilken döpelse bleven I då döpta med?» De svarade: »Vi döptes med Johannes' döpelse»

And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

Då sade Paulus: »Johannes' döpelse var en döpelse till bättring; och han sade därvid till folket, att det var på den som skulle komma efter honom, det är på Jesus, som de skulle tro.»Matt. 3,11. Apg. 1,5. 11,16.

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

Sedan de hade hört detta, läto de döpa sig i Herren Jesu namn.

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Och när Paulus lade händerna på dem, kom den helige Ande över dem, och de talade tungomål och profeterade.Apg. 2,4. 8,17.

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Och tillsammans voro de vid pass tolv män.

And all the men were about twelve.

Därefter gick han in i synagogan; och under tre månader samtalade han där, frimodigt och övertygande, med dem om Guds rike.

And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Men när några av dem förhärdade sig och voro ohörsamma och inför menigheten talade illa om »den vägen», vände han sig ifrån dem och avskilde lärjungarna och samtalade sedan dagligen med dessa i Tyrannus' lärosal.2 Kor. 6,17.

But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

Så fortgick det i två år, och alla provinsen Asiens inbyggare, både judar och greker, fingo på detta sätt höra Herrens ord.

And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

Och Gud gjorde genom Paulus kraftgärningar av icke vanligt slag.Mark. 16,20. Apg. 14,3.

And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

Man till och med tog handkläden och förkläden, som hade varit i beröring med hans kropp, och lade dem på de sjuka; och sjukdomarna veko då ifrån dem, och de onda andarna foro ut.Apg. 5,15.

So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

Men också några kringvandrande judiska besvärjare företogo sig nu att över dem som voro besatta av onda andar nämna Herren Jesu namn; de sade: »Jag besvär eder vid den Jesus som Paulus predikar.Luk. 9,49 f.

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

Bland dem som så gjorde voro sju söner av en viss Skevas, en judisk överstepräst.

And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

Men den onde anden svarade då och sade till dem: »Jesus känner jag, Paulus är mig ock väl bekant men vilka ären I?»Mark. 1,34.

And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

Och mannen som var besatt av den onde anden störtade sig på dem och övermannade både den ene och den andre; han betedde sig så våldsamt mot dem, att de måste fly ut ur huset, nakna och sargade.

And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Och detta blev bekant för alla Efesus' invånare, både judar och greker, och fruktan föll över dem alla, och Herren Jesu namn blev storligen prisat.

And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

Och många av dem som hade kommit till tro trädde fram och bekände sin synd och omtalade vad de hade gjort.

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

Och ganska många av dem som hade övat vidskepliga konster samlade ihop sina böcker och brände upp dem i allas åsyn. Och när man räknade tillsammans vad böckerna voro värda, fann man att värdet uppgick till femtio tusen silverpenningar.

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

På detta sätt hade Herrens ord mäktig framgång och visade sin kraft.Jes. 55,11. Apg. 6,7. 12,24.

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

Efter allt detta bestämde sig Paulus genom Andens tillskyndelse, att över Macedonien och Akaja fara till Jerusalem. Och han sade: »Sedan jag har varit där, måste jag ock se Rom.»Apg. 23,11. Rom. 1,13. 15,25.

After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

Han sände då två av sina medhjälpare, Timoteus och Erastus, åstad till Macedonien, men själv stannade han ännu någon tid i provinsen Asien.1 Kor. 4,17.

So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

Vid den tiden uppstod ganska mycket oväsen angående »den vägen».2 Kor. 1,8 f.

And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

Där fanns nämligen en guldsmed, vid namn Demetrius, som förfärdigade Dianatempel av silver och därmed skaffade hantverkarna en ganska stor inkomst.

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

Han kallade tillhopa dessa, jämte andra som hade liknande arbete, och sade: »I man, I veten att det är detta arbete som giver oss vår goda bärgning;

Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

men nu sen och hören I att denne Paulus icke allenast i Efesus, utan i nästan hela provinsen Asien genom sitt tal har förlett ganska mycket folk, i det han säger att de gudar som göras med människohänder icke äro gudar.Ps. 115,4 f. Jer. 10,3. Apg. 17,29.

Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

Och det är fara värt, icke allenast att denna vår hantering kommer i missaktning, utan ock att den stora gudinnan Dianas helgedom bliver räknad för intet, och att jämväl denna gudinna, som hela provinsen Asien, ja, hela världen dyrkar, kommer att lida avbräck i sitt stora anseende.»

So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

När de hörde detta, blevo de fulla av vrede och skriade: »Stor är efesiernas Diana!»

And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

Och hela staden kom i rörelse, och alla stormade på en gång till skådebanan och släpade med sig Gajus och Aristarkus, två macedonier som voro Paulus' följeslagare

And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

Paulus ville då gå in bland folket men lärjungarna tillstadde honom det icke.

And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

Också några asiarker, som voro hans vänner, sände bud till honom och bådo honom att han icke skulle giva sig in på skådebanan.

And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

Och de skriade, den ene så och den andre så; ty menigheten var upprörd, och de flesta visste icke varför de hade kommit tillsammans.

Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

Då drog man ur folkhopen fram Alexander, som judarna sköto framför sig. Och Alexander gav tecken med handen att han ville hålla ett försvarstal inför folket.

And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.

Men när de märkte att han var jude, begynte de ropa, alla med en mun, och skriade under ett par timmars tid: »Stor är efesiernas Diana!»

But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

Men stadens kansler lugnade folket och sade: »Efesier, finnes då någon människa som icke vet, att efesiernas stad är vårdare av den stora Dianas tempel och den bild av henne, som har fallit ned från himmelen?

And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

Eftersom ju ingen kan bestrida detta, bören I hålla eder lugna och icke företaga eder något förhastat.

Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

Emellertid haven I dragit fram dessa män, som icke äro helgerånare, ej heller smäda vår gudinna,

For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.

Om nu Demetrius och de hantverkare som hålla ihop med honom hava sak mot någon, så finnas ju domstolssammanträden och landshövdingar. Må de alltså göra upp saken med varandra inför rätta.

Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

Och haven I något att andraga som går därutöver, så må sådant avgöras i den lagliga folkförsamlingen.

But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

På grund av det som i dag har skett löpa vi ju till och med fara att bliva anklagade för upplopp, fastän vi icke hava gjort något ont; och någon giltig anledning till denna folkskockning kunna vi icke heller uppgiva.» Med dessa ord fick han menigheten att skiljas åt.

For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.

And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
