Acts 26

Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:

اگرپا نے پولس سے کہا، ”آپ کو اپنے دفاع میں بولنے کی اجازت ہے۔“ پولس نے ہاتھ سے اشارہ کر کے اپنے دفاع میں بولنے کا آغاز کیا،

I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:

”اگرپا بادشاہ، مَیں اپنے آپ کو خوش نصیب سمجھتا ہوں کہ آج آپ ہی میرا یہ دفاعی بیان سن رہے ہیں جو مجھے یہودیوں کے تمام الزامات کے جواب میں دینا پڑ رہا ہے۔

Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.

خاص کر اِس لئے کہ آپ یہودیوں کے رسم و رواج اور تنازعوں سے واقف ہیں۔ میری عرض ہے کہ آپ صبر سے میری بات سنیں۔

My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;

تمام یہودی جانتے ہیں کہ مَیں نے جوانی سے لے کر اب تک اپنی قوم بلکہ یروشلم میں کس طرح زندگی گزاری۔

Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

وہ مجھے بڑی دیر سے جانتے ہیں اور اگر چاہیں تو اِس کی گواہی بھی دے سکتے ہیں کہ مَیں فریسی کی زندگی گزارتا تھا، ہمارے مذہب کے اُسی فرقے کی جو سب سے کٹر ہے۔

And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:

اور آج میری عدالت اِس وجہ سے کی جا رہی ہے کہ مَیں اُس وعدے پر اُمید رکھتا ہوں جو اللہ نے ہمارے باپ دادا سے کیا۔

Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.

حقیقت میں یہ وہی اُمید ہے جس کی وجہ سے ہمارے بارہ قبیلے دن رات اور بڑی لگن سے اللہ کی عبادت کرتے رہتے ہیں اور جس کی تکمیل کے لئے وہ تڑپتے ہیں۔ توبھی اے بادشاہ، یہ لوگ مجھ پر یہ اُمید رکھنے کا الزام لگا رہے ہیں۔

Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?

لیکن آپ سب کو یہ خیال کیوں ناقابلِ یقین لگتا ہے کہ اللہ مُردوں کو زندہ کر دیتا ہے؟

I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

پہلے مَیں بھی سمجھتا تھا کہ ہر ممکن طریقے سے عیسیٰ ناصری کی مخالفت کرنا میرا فرض ہے۔

Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.

اور یہ مَیں نے یروشلم میں کیا بھی۔ راہنما اماموں سے اختیار لے کر مَیں نے وہاں کے بہت سے مُقدّسوں کو جیل میں ڈلوا دیا۔ اور جب کبھی اُنہیں سزائے موت دینے کا فیصلہ کرنا تھا تو مَیں نے بھی اِس حق میں ووٹ دیا۔

And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.

مَیں تمام عبادت خانوں میں گیا اور بہت دفعہ اُنہیں سزا دلا کر عیسیٰ کے بارے میں کفر بکنے پر مجبور کرنے کی کوشش کرتا رہا۔ مَیں اِتنے طیش میں آ گیا تھا کہ اُن کی ایذا رسانی کی غرض سے بیرونِ ملک بھی گیا۔

Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,

ایک دن مَیں راہنما اماموں سے اختیار اور اجازت نامہ لے کر دمشق جا رہا تھا۔

At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.

دوپہر تقریباً بارہ بجے مَیں سڑک پر چل رہا تھا کہ ایک روشنی دیکھی جو سورج سے زیادہ تیز تھی۔ وہ آسمان سے آ کر میرے اور میرے ہم سفروں کے گردا گرد چمکی۔

And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

ہم سب زمین پر گر گئے اور مَیں نے اَرامی زبان میں ایک آواز سنی، ’ساؤل، ساؤل، تُو مجھے کیوں ستاتا ہے؟ یوں میرے آنکس کے خلاف پاؤں مارنا تیرے لئے ہی دشواری کا باعث ہے۔‘

And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.

مَیں نے پوچھا، ’خداوند، آپ کون ہیں؟‘ خداوند نے جواب دیا، ’مَیں عیسیٰ ہوں، وہی جسے تُو ستاتا ہے۔

But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;

لیکن اب اُٹھ کر کھڑا ہو جا، کیونکہ مَیں تجھے اپنا خادم اور گواہ مقرر کرنے کے لئے تجھ پر ظاہر ہوا ہوں۔ جو کچھ تُو نے دیکھا ہے اُس کی تجھے گواہی دینی ہے اور اُس کی بھی جو مَیں آئندہ تجھ پر ظاہر کروں گا۔

Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,

مَیں تجھے تیری اپنی قوم سے بچائے رکھوں گا اور اُن غیریہودی قوموں سے بھی جن کے پاس تجھے بھیجوں گا۔

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

تُو اُن کی آنکھوں کو کھول دے گا تاکہ وہ تاریکی اور ابلیس کے اختیار سے نور اور اللہ کی طرف رجوع کریں۔ پھر اُن کے گناہوں کو معاف کر دیا جائے گا اور وہ اُن کے ساتھ آسمانی میراث میں شریک ہوں گے جو مجھ پر ایمان لانے سے مُقدّس کئے گئے ہیں۔‘

Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:

اے اگرپا بادشاہ، جب مَیں نے یہ سنا تو مَیں نے اِس آسمانی رویا کی نافرمانی نہ کی

But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judæa, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

بلکہ اِس بات کی منادی کی کہ لوگ توبہ کر کے اللہ کی طرف رجوع کریں اور اپنے عمل سے اپنی تبدیلی کا اظہار بھی کریں۔ مَیں نے اِس کی تبلیغ پہلے دمشق میں کی، پھر یروشلم اور پورے یہودیہ میں اور اِس کے بعد غیریہودی قوموں میں بھی۔

For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me.

اِسی وجہ سے یہودیوں نے مجھے بیت المُقدّس میں پکڑ کر قتل کرنے کی کوشش کی۔

Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:

لیکن اللہ نے آج تک میری مدد کی ہے، اِس لئے مَیں یہاں کھڑا ہو کر چھوٹوں اور بڑوں کو اپنی گواہی دے سکتا ہوں۔ جو کچھ مَیں سناتا ہوں وہ وہی کچھ ہے جو موسیٰ اور نبیوں نے کہا ہے،

That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

کہ مسیح دُکھ اُٹھا کر پہلا شخص ہو گا جو مُردوں میں سے جی اُٹھے گا اور کہ وہ یوں اپنی قوم اور غیریہودیوں کے سامنے اللہ کے نور کا پرچار کرے گا۔“

And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.

اچانک فیستس پولس کی بات کاٹ کر چلّا اُٹھا، ”پولس، ہوش میں آؤ! علم کی زیادتی نے تمہیں دیوانہ کر دیا ہے۔“

But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.

پولس نے جواب دیا، ”معزز فیستس، مَیں دیوانہ نہیں ہوں۔ میری یہ باتیں حقیقی اور معقول ہیں۔

For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.

بادشاہ سلامت اِن سے واقف ہیں، اِس لئے مَیں اُن سے کھل کر بات کر سکتا ہوں۔ مجھے یقین ہے کہ یہ سب کچھ اُن سے چھپا نہیں رہا، کیونکہ یہ پوشیدگی میں یا کسی کونے میں نہیں ہوا۔

King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.

اے اگرپا بادشاہ، کیا آپ نبیوں پر ایمان رکھتے ہیں؟ بلکہ مَیں جانتا ہوں کہ آپ اُن پر ایمان رکھتے ہیں۔“

Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

اگرپا نے کہا، ”آپ تو بڑی جلدی سے مجھے قائل کر کے مسیحی بنانا چاہتے ہیں۔“

And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

پولس نے جواب دیا، ”جلد یا بدیر مَیں اللہ سے دعا کرتا ہوں کہ نہ صرف آپ بلکہ تمام حاضرین میری مانند بن جائیں، سوائے میری زنجیروں کے۔“

And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them:

پھر بادشاہ، گورنر، برنیکے اور باقی سب اُٹھ کر چلے گئے۔

And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.

وہاں سے نکل کر وہ ایک دوسرے سے بات کرنے لگے۔ سب اِس پر متفق تھے کہ ”اِس آدمی نے کچھ نہیں کیا جو سزائے موت یا قید کے لائق ہو۔“

Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Cæsar.

اور اگرپا نے فیستس سے کہا، ”اگر اِس نے شہنشاہ سے اپیل نہ کی ہوتی تو اِسے رِہا کیا جا سکتا تھا۔“
