Acts 23

And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

پولس نے غور سے عدالتِ عالیہ کے ممبران کی طرف دیکھ کر کہا، ”بھائیو، آج تک مَیں نے صاف ضمیر کے ساتھ اللہ کے سامنے زندگی گزاری ہے۔“

And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

اِس پر امامِ اعظم حننیاہ نے پولس کے قریب کھڑے لوگوں سے کہا کہ وہ اُس کے منہ پر تھپڑ ماریں۔

Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

پولس نے اُس سے کہا، ”مکار ! اللہ تم کو ہی مارے گا، کیونکہ تم یہاں بیٹھے شریعت کے مطابق میرا فیصلہ کرنا چاہتے ہو جبکہ مجھے مارنے کا حکم دے کر خود شریعت کی خلاف ورزی کر رہے ہو!“

And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?

پولس کے قریب کھڑے آدمیوں نے کہا، ”تم اللہ کے امامِ اعظم کو بُرا کہنے کی جرٲت کیونکر کرتے ہو؟“

Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

پولس نے جواب دیا، ”بھائیو، مجھے معلوم نہ تھا کہ وہ امامِ اعظم ہیں، ورنہ ایسے الفاظ استعمال نہ کرتا۔ کیونکہ کلامِ مُقدّس میں لکھا ہے کہ اپنی قوم کے حاکموں کو بُرا بھلا مت کہنا۔“

But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

پولس کو علم تھا کہ عدالتِ عالیہ کے کچھ لوگ صدوقی ہیں جبکہ دیگر فریسی ہیں۔ اِس لئے وہ اجلاس میں پکار اُٹھا، ”بھائیو، مَیں فریسی بلکہ فریسی کا بیٹا بھی ہوں۔ مجھے اِس لئے عدالت میں پیش کیا گیا ہے کہ مَیں مُردوں میں سے جی اُٹھنے کی اُمید رکھتا ہوں۔“

And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.

اِس بات سے فریسی اور صدوقی ایک دوسرے سے جھگڑنے لگے اور اجلاس کے افراد دو گروہوں میں بٹ گئے۔

For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

وجہ یہ تھی کہ صدوقی نہیں مانتے کہ ہم جی اُٹھیں گے۔ وہ فرشتوں اور روحوں کا بھی انکار کرتے ہیں۔ اِس کے مقابلے میں فریسی یہ سب کچھ مانتے ہیں۔

And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

ہوتے ہوتے بڑا شور مچ گیا۔ فریسی فرقے کے کچھ عالِم کھڑے ہو کر جوش سے بحث کرنے لگے، ”ہمیں اِس آدمی میں کوئی غلطی نظر نہیں آتی، شاید کوئی روح یا فرشتہ اِس سے ہم کلام ہوا ہو۔“

And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.

جھگڑے نے اِتنا زور پکڑا کہ کمانڈر ڈر گیا، کیونکہ خطرہ تھا کہ وہ پولس کے ٹکڑے کر ڈالیں۔ اِس لئے اُس نے اپنے فوجیوں کو حکم دیا کہ وہ اُتریں اور پولس کو یہودیوں کے بیچ میں سے چھین کر قلعے میں واپس لائیں۔

And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

اُسی رات خداوند پولس کے پاس آ کھڑا ہوا اور کہا، ”حوصلہ رکھ، کیونکہ جس طرح تُو نے یروشلم میں میرے بارے میں گواہی دی ہے لازم ہے کہ اِسی طرح روم شہر میں بھی گواہی دے۔“

And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

اگلے دن کچھ یہودیوں نے سازش کر کے قَسم کھائی، ”ہم نہ تو کچھ کھائیں گے، نہ پئیں گے جب تک پولس کو قتل نہ کر لیں۔“

And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

چالیس سے زیادہ مردوں نے اِس سازش میں حصہ لیا۔

And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

وہ راہنما اماموں اور بزرگوں کے پاس گئے اور کہا، ”ہم نے پکی قَسم کھائی ہے کہ کچھ نہیں کھائیں گے جب تک پولس کو قتل نہ کر لیں۔

Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

اب ذرا یہودی عدالتِ عالیہ کے ساتھ مل کر کمانڈر سے گزارش کریں کہ وہ اُسے دوبارہ آپ کے پاس لائیں۔ بہانہ یہ پیش کریں کہ آپ مزید تفصیل سے اُس کے معاملے کا جائزہ لینا چاہتے ہیں۔ جب اُسے لایا جائے گا تو ہم اُس کے یہاں پہنچنے سے پہلے پہلے اُسے مار ڈالنے کے لئے تیار ہوں گے۔“

And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

لیکن پولس کے بھانجے کو اِس بات کا پتا چل گیا۔ اُس نے قلعے میں جا کر پولس کو اطلاع دی۔

Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

اِس پر پولس نے رومی افسروں میں سے ایک کو بُلا کر کہا، ”اِس جوان کو کمانڈر کے پاس لے جائیں۔ اِس کے پاس اُن کے لئے خبر ہے۔“

So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

افسر بھانجے کو کمانڈر کے پاس لے گیا اور کہا، ”قیدی پولس نے مجھے بُلا کر مجھ سے گزارش کی کہ اِس نوجوان کو آپ کے پاس لے آؤں۔ اُس کے پاس آپ کے لئے خبر ہے۔“

Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

کمانڈر نوجوان کا ہاتھ پکڑ کر دوسروں سے الگ ہو گیا۔ پھر اُس نے پوچھا، ”کیا خبر ہے جو آپ مجھے بتانا چاہتے ہیں؟“

And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

اُس نے جواب دیا، ”یہودی آپ سے درخواست کرنے پر متفق ہو گئے ہیں کہ آپ کل پولس کو دوبارہ یہودی عدالتِ عالیہ کے سامنے لائیں۔ بہانہ یہ ہو گا کہ وہ اَور زیادہ تفصیل سے اُس کے بارے میں معلومات حاصل کرنا چاہتے ہیں۔

But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.

لیکن اُن کی بات نہ مانیں، کیونکہ اُن میں سے چالیس سے زیادہ آدمی اُس کی تاک میں بیٹھے ہیں۔ اُنہوں نے قَسم کھائی ہے کہ ہم نہ کچھ کھائیں گے نہ پئیں گے جب تک اُسے قتل نہ کر لیں۔ وہ ابھی تیار بیٹھے ہیں اور صرف اِس انتظار میں ہیں کہ آپ اُن کی بات مانیں۔“

So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

کمانڈر نے نوجوان کو رُخصت کر کے کہا، ”جو کچھ آپ نے مجھے بتا دیا ہے اُس کا کسی سے ذکر نہ کرنا۔“

And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Cæsarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

پھر کمانڈر نے اپنے افسروں میں سے دو کو بُلایا جو سَو سَو فوجیوں پر مقرر تھے۔ اُس نے حکم دیا، ”دو سَو فوجی، ستر گھڑسوار اور دو سَو نیزہ باز تیار کریں۔ اُنہیں آج رات کو نو بجے قیصریہ جانا ہے۔

And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

پولس کے لئے بھی گھوڑے تیار رکھنا تاکہ وہ صحیح سلامت گورنر کے پاس پہنچے۔“

And he wrote a letter after this manner:

پھر اُس نے یہ خط لکھا،

Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.

”از: کلودیُس لوسیاس معزز گورنر فیلکس کو سلام۔

This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.

یہودی اِس آدمی کو پکڑ کر قتل کرنے کو تھے۔ مجھے پتا چلا کہ یہ رومی شہری ہے، اِس لئے مَیں نے اپنے دستوں کے ساتھ آ کر اِسے نکال کر بچا لیا۔

And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:

مَیں معلوم کرنا چاہتا تھا کہ وہ کیوں اِس پر الزام لگا رہے ہیں، اِس لئے مَیں اُتر کر اِسے اُن کی عدالتِ عالیہ کے سامنے لایا۔

Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

مجھے معلوم ہوا کہ اُن کا الزام اُن کی شریعت سے تعلق رکھتا ہے۔ لیکن اِس نے ایسا کچھ نہیں کیا جس کی بنا پر یہ جیل میں ڈالنے یا سزائے موت کے لائق ہو۔

And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.

پھر مجھے اطلاع دی گئی کہ اِس آدمی کو قتل کرنے کی سازش کی گئی ہے، اِس لئے مَیں نے اِسے فوراً آپ کے پاس بھیج دیا۔ مَیں نے الزام لگانے والوں کو بھی حکم دیا کہ وہ اِس پر اپنا الزام آپ کو ہی پیش کریں۔“

Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.

فوجیوں نے اُسی رات کمانڈر کا حکم پورا کیا۔ پولس کو ساتھ لے کر وہ انتی پترس تک پہنچ گئے۔

On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:

اگلے دن پیادے قلعے کو واپس چلے جبکہ گھڑسواروں نے پولس کو لے کر سفر جاری رکھا۔

Who, when they came to Cæsarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

قیصریہ پہنچ کر اُنہوں نے پولس کو خط سمیت گورنر فیلکس کے سامنے پیش کیا۔

And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;

اُس نے خط پڑھ لیا اور پھر پولس سے پوچھا، ”آپ کس صوبے کے ہیں؟“ پولس نے کہا، ”کلِکیہ کا۔“

I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.

اِس پر گورنر نے کہا، ”مَیں آپ کی سماعت اُس وقت کروں گا جب آپ پر الزام لگانے والے پہنچیں گے۔“ اور اُس نے حکم دیا کہ ہیرودیس کے محل میں پولس کی پہرہ داری کی جائے۔
