Acts 22

Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

”بھائیو اور بزرگو، میری بات سنیں کہ مَیں اپنے دفاع میں کچھ بتاؤں۔“

(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)

جب اُنہوں نے سنا کہ وہ اَرامی زبان میں بول رہا ہے تو وہ مزید خاموش ہو گئے۔ پولس نے اپنی بات جاری رکھی۔

I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

”مَیں یہودی ہوں اور کلِکیہ کے شہر ترسس میں پیدا ہوا۔ لیکن مَیں نے اِسی شہر یروشلم میں پرورش پائی اور جملی ایل کے زیرِ نگرانی تعلیم حاصل کی۔ اُنہوں نے مجھے تفصیل اور احتیاط سے ہمارے باپ دادا کی شریعت سکھائی۔ اُس وقت مَیں بھی آپ کی طرح اللہ کے لئے سرگرم تھا۔

And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

اِس لئے مَیں نے اِس نئی راہ کے پیروکاروں کا پیچھا کیا اور مردوں اور خواتیں کو گرفتار کر کے جیل میں ڈلوا دیا یہاں تک کہ مروا بھی دیا۔

As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

امامِ اعظم اور یہودی عدالتِ عالیہ کے ممبران اِس بات کی تصدیق کر سکتے ہیں۔ اُن ہی سے مجھے دمشق میں رہنے والے یہودی بھائیوں کے لئے سفارشی خط مل گئے تاکہ مَیں وہاں بھی جا کر اِس نئے فرقے کے لوگوں کو گرفتار کر کے سزا دینے کے لئے یروشلم لاؤں۔

And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

مَیں اِس مقصد کے لئے دمشق کے قریب پہنچ گیا تھا کہ اچانک آسمان کی طرف سے ایک تیز روشنی میرے گرد چمکی۔

And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

مَیں زمین پر گر پڑا تو ایک آواز سنائی دی، ’ساؤل، ساؤل، تُو مجھے کیوں ستاتا ہے؟‘

And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

مَیں نے پوچھا، ’خداوند، آپ کون ہیں؟‘ آواز نے جواب دیا، ’مَیں عیسیٰ ناصری ہوں جسے تُو ستاتا ہے۔‘

And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

میرے ہم سفروں نے روشنی کو تو دیکھا، لیکن مجھ سے مخاطب ہونے والے کی آواز نہ سنی۔

And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

مَیں نے پوچھا، ’خداوند، مَیں کیا کروں؟‘ خداوند نے جواب دیا، ’اُٹھ کر دمشق میں جا۔ وہاں تجھے وہ سارا کام بتایا جائے گا جو اللہ تیرے ذمے لگانے کا ارادہ رکھتا ہے۔‘

And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

روشنی کی تیزی نے مجھے اندھا کر دیا تھا، اِس لئے میرے ساتھی میرا ہاتھ پکڑ کر مجھے دمشق لے گئے۔

And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

وہاں ایک آدمی رہتا تھا جس کا نام حننیاہ تھا۔ وہ شریعت کا کٹر پیروکار تھا اور وہاں کے رہنے والے یہودیوں میں نیک نام۔

Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

وہ آیا اور میرے پاس کھڑے ہو کر کہا، ’ساؤل بھائی، دوبارہ بینا ہو جائیں!‘ اُسی لمحے مَیں اُسے دیکھ سکا۔

And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

پھر اُس نے کہا، ’ہمارے باپ دادا کے خدا نے آپ کو اِس مقصد کے لئے چن لیا ہے کہ آپ اُس کی مرضی جان کر اُس کے راست خادم کو دیکھیں اور اُس کے اپنے منہ سے اُس کی آواز سنیں۔

For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

جو کچھ آپ نے دیکھ اور سن لیا ہے اُس کی گواہی آپ تمام لوگوں کو دیں گے۔

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

چنانچہ آپ کیوں دیر کر رہے ہیں؟ اُٹھیں اور اُس کے نام میں بپتسمہ لیں تاکہ آپ کے گناہ دُھل جائیں۔‘

And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;

جب مَیں یروشلم واپس آیا تو مَیں ایک دن بیت المُقدّس میں گیا۔ وہاں دعا کرتے کرتے مَیں وجد کی حالت میں آ گیا

And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

اور خداوند کو دیکھا۔ اُس نے فرمایا، ’جلدی کر! یروشلم کو فوراً چھوڑ دے کیونکہ لوگ میرے بارے میں تیری گواہی کو قبول نہیں کریں گے۔‘

And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

مَیں نے اعتراض کیا، ’اے خداوند، وہ تو جانتے ہیں کہ مَیں نے جگہ بہ جگہ عبادت خانے میں جا کر تجھ پر ایمان رکھنے والوں کو گرفتار کیا اور اُن کی پٹائی کروائی۔

And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

اور اُس وقت بھی جب تیرے شہید ستفنس کو قتل کیا جا رہا تھا مَیں ساتھ کھڑا تھا۔ مَیں راضی تھا اور اُن لوگوں کے کپڑوں کی نگرانی کر رہا تھا جو اُسے سنگسار کر رہے تھے۔‘

And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.

لیکن خداوند نے کہا، ’جا، کیونکہ مَیں تجھے دُوردراز علاقوں میں غیریہودیوں کے پاس بھیج دوں گا‘۔“

And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

یہاں تک ہجوم پولس کی باتیں سنتا رہا۔ لیکن اب وہ چلّا اُٹھے، ”اِسے ہٹا دو! اِسے جان سے مار دو! یہ زندہ رہنے کے لائق نہیں!“

And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,

وہ چیخیں مار مار کر اپنی چادریں اُتارنے اور ہَوا میں گرد اُڑانے لگے۔

The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.

اِس پر کمانڈر نے حکم دیا کہ پولس کو قلعے میں لے جایا جائے اور کوڑے لگا کر اُس کی پوچھ گچھ کی جائے۔ کیونکہ وہ معلوم کرنا چاہتا تھا کہ لوگ کس وجہ سے پولس کے خلاف یوں چیخیں مار رہے ہیں۔

And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

جب وہ اُسے کوڑے لگانے کے لئے لے کر جا رہے تھے تو پولس نے ساتھ کھڑے افسر سے کہا، ”کیا آپ کے لئے جائز ہے کہ ایک رومی شہری کے کوڑے لگوائیں اور وہ بھی عدالت میں پیش کئے بغیر؟“

When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

افسر نے جب یہ سنا تو کمانڈر کے پاس جا کر اُسے اطلاع دی، ”آپ کیا کرنے کو ہیں؟ یہ آدمی تو رومی شہری ہے!“

Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

کمانڈر پولس کے پاس آیا اور پوچھا، ”مجھے صحیح بتائیں، کیا آپ رومی شہری ہیں؟“ پولس نے جواب دیا، ”جی ہاں۔“

And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

کمانڈر نے کہا، ”مَیں تو بڑی رقم دے کر شہری بنا ہوں۔“ پولس نے جواب دیا، ”لیکن مَیں تو پیدائشی شہری ہوں۔“

Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

یہ سنتے ہی وہ فوجی جو اُس کی پوچھ گچھ کرنے کو تھے پیچھے ہٹ گئے۔ کمانڈر خود گھبرا گیا کہ مَیں نے ایک رومی شہری کو زنجیروں میں جکڑ رکھا ہے۔

On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

اگلے دن کمانڈر صاف معلوم کرنا چاہتا تھا کہ یہودی پولس پر کیوں الزام لگا رہے ہیں۔ اِس لئے اُس نے راہنما اماموں اور یہودی عدالتِ عالیہ کے تمام ممبران کا اجلاس منعقد کرنے کا حکم دیا۔ پھر پولس کو آزاد کر کے قلعے سے نیچے لایا اور اُن کے سامنے کھڑا کیا۔
