Ecclesiastes 10

Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.

कुछ मरी हुई मक्खियाँ सर्वोत्तम सुगंध तक को दुर्गधिंत कर सकती हैं। इसी प्रकार छोटी सी मूर्खता से समूची बुद्धि और प्रतिष्ठा नष्ट हो सकती है।

A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.

बुद्धिमान के विचार उसे उचित मार्ग पर ले चलाते हैं। किन्तु मूर्ख के विचार उसे बुरे रास्ते पर ले जाते हैं।

Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

मूर्ख जब रास्ते में चलता हुआ होता है तो उसके चलने मात्र से उसकी मूर्खता व्यक्त होती है। जिससे हर व्यक्ति देख लेता है कि वह मूर्ख है।

If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.

तुम्हारा अधिकारी तुमसे रूष्ट है, बस इसी कारण से अपना काम कभी मत छोड़ो। यदि तुम शांत और सहायक बने रहो तो तुम बड़ी से बड़ी गलातियों को सुधार सकते हो।

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

और देखो यह बात कुछ अलग ही है जिसे मैंने इस जीवन में देखा है। यह बात न्यायोचित भी नहीं है। यह वैसी भूल है जैसी शासक किया करते हैं।

Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.

मूर्ख व्यक्तियों को महत्वपूर्ण पद दे दिये जाते हैं और सम्पन्न व्यक्ति ऐसे कामों को प्राप्त करते हैं जिनका कोई महत्व नहीं होता।

I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

मैंने ऐसे व्यक्ति देखे हैं जिन्हें दास होना चाहिये था। किन्तु वह घोड़ों पर चढ़े रहते हैं। जबकि वे व्यक्ति जिन्हें शासक होना चाहिये था, दासों के समान उनके आगे पीछे घूमते रहते हैं।

He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

वह व्यक्ति जो कोई गढ़ा खोदता है उसमें गिर भी सकता है। वह व्यक्ति जो किसी दीवार को गिराता है, उसे साँप डस भी सकता है।

Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.

एक व्यक्ति जो बड़े—बड़े पत्थरों को धकेलता है, उनसे चोट भी खा सकता है और वह व्यक्ति जो पेड़ो को काटता है, उसके लिये यह खतरा भी बना रहता है कि पेड़ उसके ऊपर ही न गिर जाये।

If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

किन्तु बुद्धि के कारण हर काम आसान हो जाता है। भोंटे, बेधार चाकू से काटना बहुत कठिन होता है किन्तु यदि वह अपना चाकू पैना कर ले तो काम आसान हो जाता है। बुद्धि इसी प्रकार की है।

Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.

कोई व्यक्ति यह जानता है कि साँपों को वश में कैसे किया जाता है किन्तु जब वह व्यक्ति आस पास नहीं है और साँप किसी को काट लेता है तो वह बुद्धि बेकार हो जाती है। बुद्धि इसी प्रकार की है।

The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

बुद्धिमान के शब्द प्रशंसा दिलाते हैं। किन्तु मूर्ख के शब्दों से विनाश होता है।

The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

एक मूर्ख व्यक्ति मूर्खतापूर्ण बातें कहकर ही शुरूआत करता है। और अंत में वह पागलपन से भरी हुई स्वयं को ही हानि पहुँचाने वाली बातें कहता है।

A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

एक मूर्ख व्यक्ति हर समय जो उसे करना होता है, उसी की बातें करता रहता है। किन्तु भविष्य में क्या होगा यह तो कोई नहीं जानता। भविष्य में क्या होने जा रहा है, यह तो कोई बता नहीं सकता।

The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.

मूर्ख इतना चतुर नहीं कि अपने घर का मार्ग पा जाये। इसलिये उसको तो जीवन भर कठोर काम करना है।

Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

किसी देश के लिये बहुत बुरा है कि उसका राजा किसी बच्छे जैसा हो और किसी देश के लिये यह बहुत बुरा है कि उसके अधिकारी अपना सारा समय खाने में ही गुजारते हों।

Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

किन्तु किसी देश के लिये यह बहुत अच्छा है कि उसका राजा किसी उत्तम वंश का हो। किसी देश के लिये यह बहुत उत्तम है कि उसके अधिकारी अपने खाने और पीने पर नियन्त्रण रखते हैं। वे अधिकारी बलशाली होने के लिये खाते पीते हैं न कि मतवाले हो जाने के लिये।

By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.

यदि कोई व्यक्ति काम करने में बहुत सुस्त है, तो उसका घर टपकना शुरू कर देगा और उसके घर की छत गिरने लगेगी।

A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.

लोग भोजन का आनन्द लेते हैं और दाखमधु जीवन को और अधिक खुशियों से भर देती हैं। किन्तु धन के चक्कर में सभी पड़े रहते हैं।

Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

राजा के विषय में बुरी बातें मत करो। उसके बारे में बुरी बातें सोचो तक मत। सम्पन्न व्यक्तियों के विषय में भी बुरी बातें मत करो। चाहे तुम अपने घर में अकेले ही क्यों न हो। क्योंकि हो सकता है कि कोई एक छोटी सी चिड़ियाँ उड़कर तुमने जो कुछ कहा है, वह हर बात उन्हें बता दे।
