Acts 19

And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

در آن زمان كه آپولس در شهر قرنتس بود، پولس در نواحی داخلی آن استان مسافرت می‌کرد تا به افسس رسید و در آنجا با تعدادی شاگرد برخورد كرد.

He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

از آنان پرسید: «آیا وقتی ایمان آوردید، روح‌القدس را یافتید؟» آنها در پاسخ گفتند: «خیر، ما حتّی خبر هم نداشتیم كه روح‌القدسی وجود دارد.»

And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

پولس به ایشان گفت: «پس چه نوع تعمیدی گرفتید؟» گفتند: «تعمید یحیی.»

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

پولس فرمود: «تعمیدی كه یحیی می‌داد، نشانهٔ توبه بود و در ضمن به مردم می‌گفت كه به آن شخصی كه بعد از او می‌آید، یعنی به عیسی، ایمان بیاورند.»

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

وقتی آنها این را شنیدند به نام عیسی خداوند تعمید گرفتند

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

و هنگامی‌که پولس بر سر آنان دست نهاد، روح‌القدس بر آنان نازل شد و به زبانها صحبت كرده و نبوّت می‌‌نمودند.

And all the men were about twelve.

این مردان جمعاً در حدود دوازده نفر بودند.

And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

پولس به كنیسه رفت و مدّت سه ماه در آن شهر با شهامت تمام صحبت می‌کرد و با استدلال گفت‌وگو می‌‌نمود و می‌کوشید كه شنوندگان را در مورد پادشاهی خدا متقاعد سازد.

But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

امّا عدّه‌ای از آنان سنگدل بودند و ایمان نمی‌آوردند و برعکس، از طریقهٔ الهی پیش مردم بدگویی می‌کردند. بنابراین پولس از آنان كناره‌گیری كرد و شاگردان را به جای دیگری برد و همه روزه در تالار سخنرانی طیرانس مجلس بحثی برپا می‌کرد.

And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

این برنامه به مدّت دو سال ادامه داشت و نتیجهٔ آن این شد كه جمیع ساكنان استان آسیا اعم از یهودی و یونانی پیام خداوند را شنیدند.

And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

خدا به دست پولس معجزات بزرگ نشان می‌داد.

So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

به طوری که مردم دستمالها و پیش‌بندهایی را كه با بدن پولس تماس یافته بود، می‌بردند و بر بدن مریضان می‌گذاشتند و آنان از امراض خود شفا می‌یافتند و ارواح پلید از آنان خارج می‌گشت.

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

امّا در این زمان عدّه‌ای از جنگیران دوره‌گرد یهودی در صدد برآمدند، كه با ذكر نام عیسی خداوند ارواح پلید را اخراج نمایند. آنان چنین می‌گفتند: «تو را به عیسایی كه پولس بشارت می‌دهد قسم می‌دهم.»

And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

و هفت نفر از پسران شخصی به نام اسكیوا، كه یكی از سران كاهنان بود، این روش را به كار می‌بردند.

And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

امّا روح پلید پاسخ داد: «من عیسی را می‌شناسم و دربارهٔ پولس اطّلاع دارم امّا شما چه کاره‌اید؟»

And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

مردی كه روح پلید داشت، با چنان قدرتی به آنان حمله كرد كه همه مغلوب شدند و برهنه و زخمی از آن خانه فرار كردند.

And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

این موضوع به گوش همهٔ ساكنان افسس اعم از یهودی و یونانی رسید و همه را به وحشت انداخت و نام عیسی خداوند در میان ایشان بیشتر مورد احترام قرار گرفت.

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

عدّهٔ زیادی از کسانی‌که ایمان آورده بودند پیش آمدند و اعتراف كردند، كه قبل از آن به جادوگری مشغول بودند

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

و عدّهٔ کثیری از ساحران کتب جادوگری خود را جمع كردند و پیش مردم سوزانیدند. كتابها را كه قیمت گذاشتند، معلوم شد كه ارزش آنها برابر پنجاه‌هزار سکّهٔ نقره بود.

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

به این ترتیب كلام خداوند منتشر می‌شد و قدرت بیشتری می‌یافت.

After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

پس از این وقایع پولس تصمیم گرفت، كه از مقدونیه و یونان دیدن نماید و از آنجا به اورشلیم برود. او گفت: «بعد از رفتن به آنجا شهر روم را هم باید ببینم.»

So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

پس دو نفر از دستیاران خود یعنی تیموتاؤس و ارسطوس را به مقدونیه فرستاد و خود او مدّت بیشتری در استان آسیا اقامت نمود.

And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

در این روزها سر و صدای زیادی دربارهٔ این طریقه در افسس بلند شد.

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

در آنجا شخصی بود به نام دیمیتریوس نقره ساز، كه تصاویر نقره‌ای از بتكدهٔ آرتمیس (دیانا) می‌ساخت و به این وسیله برای صنعتگران شغل خوب و مفیدی فراهم ساخته بود.

Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

پس او انجمنی مركب از آنان و همچنین صاحبان حرفه‌های مشابه تشكیل داد و خطاب به ایشان گفت: «ای آقایان، می‌دانید كه سعادت زندگی ما وابسته به این صنعت است

Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

و به طوری که می‌‌بینید و می‌شنوید این پولس با تبلیغات خود نه فقط در شهر ما افسس، بلكه تقریباً در سرتاسر استان آسیا عدّهٔ فراوانی را به طرف خود كشیده و منحرف ساخته است و می‌گوید كه چیزهای ساخته شده به دست انسان به هیچ وجه خدایان نیستند.

So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

پس خطر تنها در این نیست كه شغل ما از اعتبار بیفتد بلكه این خطر هم هست كه پرستشگاه الههٔ ما آرتمیس بی‌ارزش گردد و طولی نخواهد كشید كه عظمت خود الهه كه مورد پرستش تمام مردم استان آسیا و سراسر جهان است، از بین برود.»

And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

وقتی آنها این را شنیدند غضبناک گشتند و فریاد می‌زدند: «بزرگ است آرتمیس افسسیان.»

And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

شهر به هم ریخت و مردم غایوس و اَرِسْتَرخُس را که از اهالی مقدونیه و از همراهان پولس بودند دستگیر كردند و كشان‌كشان به تماشاخانهٔ شهر بردند.

And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

پولس می‌‌خواست كه با جمعیّت روبه‌رو شود، امّا ایمانداران نگذاشتند.

And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

حتّی عدّه‌ای از بزرگان استان آسیا كه با پولس رفاقت داشتند، پیش او فرستاده و اصرار كردند كه در تماشاخانه شهر جان خود را به خطر نیندازند.

Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

در این میان دسته‌ای یک چیز می‌گفتند و دسته‌ای چیز دیگر، زیرا آن جماعت بسیار آشفته بود و اغلب آنان اصلاً مقصود جمع شدن خود را نمی‌دانستند.

And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.

امّا عدّه‌ای گمان بردند اسكندر مسئول است، چون یهودیان او را به جلوی جمعیّت فرستاده بودند. پس او با اشارهٔ دست از مردم خواست، كه ساكت باشند و سعی او این بود كه در پیش آن جماعت دفاع نماید.

But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

امّا وقتی مردم فهمیدند كه اسكندر یهودی است، همه با یک صدا به مدّت دو ساعت پشت سرهم فریاد می‌زدند: «بزرگ است آرتمیس افسسیان.»

And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

سرانجام شهردار مردم را ساكت كرد و گفت: «ای مردان افسس، همه بدون استثناء می‌دانند كه شهر ما افسس، حافظ پرستشگاه آرتمیس بزرگ و حافظ سنگ مقدّسی است كه از آسمان به زمین آمده است.

Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

و از آنجا كه این حقایق غیر قابل انكار است صلاحتان بر این است كه آرام باشید و ندانسته كاری نكنید.

For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.

این مردانی كه شما به عنوان متّهم به اینجا آورده‌اید، نه به معبد ما دستبرد زده‌اند و نه نسبت به الههٔ ما سخن كفرآمیز گفته‌اند.

Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

پس اگر دیمیتریوس و همكارانش ادّعایی علیه كسی دارند، در دادگاهها باز است و فرمانداران رومی حاضرند، آنها می‌توانند در آنجا علیه یكدیگر شكایت نمایند.

But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

اگر مسائل دیگری در پیش است، باید در یک جلسه رسمی حل و فصل نمایند.

For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.

زیرا این خطر در پیش است كه به‌خاطر كار امروز متّهم به اخلالگری شویم. درحالی‌که هیچ دلیلی برای آن وجود ندارد و هیچ جوابی هم برای توجیه این شورش نداریم.»

And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

این را گفت و حاضران مجلس را مرخّص كرد.
