John 18

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

یہ کہہ کر عیسیٰ اپنے شاگردوں کے ساتھ نکلا اور وادیِ قدرون کو پار کر کے ایک باغ میں داخل ہوا۔

And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

یہوداہ جو اُسے دشمن کے حوالے کرنے والا تھا وہ بھی اِس جگہ سے واقف تھا، کیونکہ عیسیٰ وہاں اپنے شاگردوں کے ساتھ جایا کرتا تھا۔

Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

راہنما اماموں اور فریسیوں نے یہوداہ کو رومی فوجیوں کا دستہ اور بیت المُقدّس کے کچھ پہرے دار دیئے تھے۔ اب یہ مشعلیں، لالٹین اور ہتھیار لئے باغ میں پہنچے۔

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

عیسیٰ کو معلوم تھا کہ اُسے کیا پیش آئے گا۔ چنانچہ اُس نے نکل کر اُن سے پوچھا، ”تم کس کو ڈھونڈ رہے ہو؟“

They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”عیسیٰ ناصری کو۔“ عیسیٰ نے اُنہیں بتایا، ”مَیں ہی ہوں۔“ یہوداہ جو اُسے دشمن کے حوالے کرنا چاہتا تھا، وہ بھی اُن کے ساتھ کھڑا تھا۔

As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

جب عیسیٰ نے اعلان کیا، ”مَیں ہی ہوں،“ تو سب پیچھے ہٹ کر زمین پر گر پڑے۔

Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

ایک اَور بار عیسیٰ نے اُن سے سوال کیا، ”تم کس کو ڈھونڈ رہے ہو؟“ اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”عیسیٰ ناصری کو۔“

Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

اُس نے کہا، ”مَیں تم کو بتا چکا ہوں کہ مَیں ہی ہوں۔ اگر تم مجھے ڈھونڈ رہے ہو تو اِن کو جانے دو۔“

That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

یوں اُس کی یہ بات پوری ہوئی، ”مَیں نے اُن میں سے جو تُو نے مجھے دیئے ہیں ایک کو بھی نہیں کھویا۔“

Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

شمعون پطرس کے پاس تلوار تھی۔ اب اُس نے اُسے میان سے نکال کر امامِ اعظم کے غلام کا دہنا کان اُڑا دیا (غلام کا نام ملخُس تھا)۔

Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

لیکن عیسیٰ نے پطرس سے کہا، ”تلوار کو میان میں رکھ۔ کیا مَیں وہ پیالہ نہ پیؤں جو باپ نے مجھے دیا ہے؟“

Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

پھر فوجی دستے، اُن کے افسر اور بیت المُقدّس کے یہودی پہرے داروں نے عیسیٰ کو گرفتار کر کے باندھ لیا۔

And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

پہلے وہ اُسے حنّا کے پاس لے گئے۔ حنّا اُس سال کے امامِ اعظم کائفا کا سُسر تھا۔

Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

کائفا ہی نے یہودیوں کو یہ مشورہ دیا تھا کہ بہتر یہ ہے کہ ایک ہی آدمی اُمّت کے لئے مر جائے۔

And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

شمعون پطرس کسی اَور شاگرد کے ساتھ عیسیٰ کے پیچھے ہو لیا تھا۔ یہ دوسرا شاگرد امامِ اعظم کا جاننے والا تھا، اِس لئے وہ عیسیٰ کے ساتھ امامِ اعظم کے صحن میں داخل ہوا۔

But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

پطرس باہر دروازے پر کھڑا رہا۔ پھر امامِ اعظم کا جاننے والا شاگرد دوبارہ نکل آیا۔ اُس نے گیٹ کی نگرانی کرنے والی عورت سے بات کی تو اُسے پطرس کو اپنے ساتھ اندر لے جانے کی اجازت ملی۔

Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.

اُس عورت نے پطرس سے پوچھا، ”تم بھی اِس آدمی کے شاگرد ہو کہ نہیں؟“ اُس نے جواب دیا، ”نہیں، مَیں نہیں ہوں۔“

And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

ٹھنڈ تھی، اِس لئے غلاموں اور پہرے داروں نے لکڑی کے کوئلوں سے آگ جلائی۔ اب وہ اُس کے پاس کھڑے تاپ رہے تھے۔ پطرس بھی اُن کے ساتھ کھڑا تاپ رہا تھا۔

The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

اِتنے میں امامِ اعظم عیسیٰ کی پوچھ گچھ کر کے اُس کے شاگردوں اور تعلیم کے بارے میں تفتیش کرنے لگا۔

Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

عیسیٰ نے جواب میں کہا، ”مَیں نے دنیا میں کھل کر بات کی ہے۔ مَیں ہمیشہ یہودی عبادت خانوں اور بیت المُقدّس میں تعلیم دیتا رہا، وہاں جہاں تمام یہودی جمع ہوا کرتے ہیں۔ پوشیدگی میں تو مَیں نے کچھ نہیں کہا۔

Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

آپ مجھ سے کیوں پوچھ رہے ہیں؟ اُن سے دریافت کریں جنہوں نے میری باتیں سنی ہیں۔ اُن کو معلوم ہے کہ مَیں نے کیا کچھ کہا ہے۔“

And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

اِس پر ساتھ کھڑے بیت المُقدّس کے پہرے داروں میں سے ایک نے عیسیٰ کے منہ پر تھپڑ مار کر کہا، ”کیا یہ امامِ اعظم سے بات کرنے کا طریقہ ہے جب وہ تم سے کچھ پوچھے؟“

Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

عیسیٰ نے جواب دیا، ”اگر مَیں نے بُری بات کی ہے تو ثابت کر۔ لیکن اگر سچ کہا، تو تُو نے مجھے کیوں مارا؟“

Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

پھر حنّا نے عیسیٰ کو بندھی ہوئی حالت میں امامِ اعظم کائفا کے پاس بھیج دیا۔

And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.

شمعون پطرس اب تک آگ کے پاس کھڑا تاپ رہا تھا۔ اِتنے میں دوسرے اُس سے پوچھنے لگے، ”تم بھی اُس کے شاگرد ہو کہ نہیں؟“ لیکن پطرس نے انکار کیا، ”نہیں، مَیں نہیں ہوں۔“

One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

پھر امامِ اعظم کا ایک غلام بول اُٹھا جو اُس آدمی کا رشتے دار تھا جس کا کان پطرس نے اُڑا دیا تھا، ”کیا مَیں نے تم کو باغ میں اُس کے ساتھ نہیں دیکھا تھا؟“

Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

پطرس نے ایک بار پھر انکار کیا، اور انکار کرتے ہی مرغ کی بانگ سنائی دی۔

Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

پھر یہودی عیسیٰ کو کائفا سے لے کر رومی گورنر کے محل بنام پریٹوریُم کے پاس پہنچ گئے۔ اب صبح ہو چکی تھی اور چونکہ یہودی فسح کی عید کے کھانے میں شریک ہونا چاہتے تھے، اِس لئے وہ محل میں داخل نہ ہوئے، ورنہ وہ ناپاک ہو جاتے۔

Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

چنانچہ پیلاطس نکل کر اُن کے پاس آیا اور پوچھا، ”تم اِس آدمی پر کیا الزام لگا رہے ہو؟“

They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”اگر یہ مجرم نہ ہوتا تو ہم اِسے آپ کے حوالے نہ کرتے۔“

Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

پیلاطس نے کہا، ”پھر اِسے لے جاؤ اور اپنی شرعی عدالتوں میں پیش کرو۔“ لیکن یہودیوں نے اعتراض کیا، ”ہمیں کسی کو سزائے موت دینے کی اجازت نہیں۔“

That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

عیسیٰ نے اِس طرف اشارہ کیا تھا کہ وہ کس طرح مرے گا اور اب اُس کی یہ بات پوری ہوئی۔

Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

تب پیلاطس پھر اپنے محل میں گیا۔ وہاں سے اُس نے عیسیٰ کو بُلایا اور اُس سے پوچھا، ”کیا تم یہودیوں کے بادشاہ ہو؟“

Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

عیسیٰ نے پوچھا، ”کیا آپ اپنی طرف سے یہ سوال کر رہے ہیں، یا اَوروں نے آپ کو میرے بارے میں بتایا ہے؟“

Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

پیلاطس نے جواب دیا، ”کیا مَیں یہودی ہوں؟ تمہاری اپنی قوم اور راہنما اماموں ہی نے تمہیں میرے حوالے کیا ہے۔ تم سے کیا کچھ سرزد ہوا ہے؟“

Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

عیسیٰ نے کہا، ”میری بادشاہی اِس دنیا کی نہیں ہے۔ اگر وہ اِس دنیا کی ہوتی تو میرے خادم سخت جد و جہد کرتے تاکہ مجھے یہودیوں کے حوالے نہ کیا جاتا۔ لیکن ایسا نہیں ہے۔ اب میری بادشاہی یہاں کی نہیں ہے۔“

Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

پیلاطس نے کہا، ”تو پھر تم واقعی بادشاہ ہو؟“ عیسیٰ نے جواب دیا، ”آپ صحیح کہتے ہیں، مَیں بادشاہ ہوں۔ مَیں اِسی مقصد کے لئے پیدا ہو کر دنیا میں آیا کہ سچائی کی گواہی دوں۔ جو بھی سچائی کی طرف سے ہے وہ میری سنتا ہے۔“

Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

پیلاطس نے پوچھا، ”سچائی کیا ہے؟“ پھر وہ دوبارہ نکل کر یہودیوں کے پاس گیا۔ اُس نے اعلان کیا، ”مجھے اُسے مجرم ٹھہرانے کی کوئی وجہ نہیں ملی۔

But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

لیکن تمہاری ایک رسم ہے جس کے مطابق مجھے عیدِ فسح کے موقع پر تمہارے لئے ایک قیدی کو رِہا کرنا ہے۔ کیا تم چاہتے ہو کہ مَیں ’یہودیوں کے بادشاہ‘ کو رِہا کر دوں؟“

Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

لیکن جواب میں لوگ چلّانے لگے، ”نہیں، اِس کو نہیں بلکہ برابا کو۔“ (برابا ڈاکو تھا۔)
