Acts 26

Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:

اغریپاس خطاب به پولس گفت: «ما به تو اجازه می‌دهیم كه از خود دفاع كنی» پولس دستهای خود را گشود و از خود چنین دفاع كرد:

I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:

«ای اغریپاس پادشاه، برای من كمال خوشوقتی است كه امروز در پیشگاه آن حضرت در خصوص شكایاتی كه یهودیان از من دارند به دفاع برمی‌‌خیزم.

Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.

و بیشتر از این خوشوقتم كه آن ‌جناب به همهٔ آداب و رسوم یهودیان و اختلافات بین آنان آشنایی كامل دارید. تمنّا دارم لطف فرموده به عرایض بنده توجّه نمایید.

My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;

«همهٔ یهودیان به خوبی می‌دانند كه جوانی من چگونه گذشته است و می‌دانند كه از همان ابتدا چگونه در بین ملّت خودم و در اورشلیم زندگی كردم.

Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

آنان مرا از اول می‌شناختند و اگر بخواهند می‌توانند آن را تصدیق كنند. آنها می‌دانند كه من عمری را در فریسی‌گری یعنی پیروی از دقیقترین فرقه‌های دین خود گذرانده‌ام.

And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:

و حالا به‌خاطر امید به آن وعده‌ای كه خدا به نیاکان ما داده است محاكمه می‌شوم.

Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.

این همان وعده‌ای است كه دوازده طایفهٔ ما امید دارند كه روزی انجام آن را ببینند و از صمیم قلب شب و روز عبادت می‌کنند. آری، به‌خاطر همین امید است كه یهودیان از من شكایت کرده‌اند. ای پادشاه،

Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?

چرا به نظر آن جناب محال می‌آید كه خدا مردگان را زنده گرداند؟

I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

«خود من روزی این را وظیفهٔ خود می‌دانستم كه به هر وسیله‌ای با عیسای ناصری مخالفت نمایم.

Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.

و در اورشلیم همین كار را كردم و با اختیاراتی كه از سران كاهنان گرفتم، بسیاری از مقدّسان را به زندان انداختم و وقتی آنان را می‌كشتند برضدشان رأی می‌دادم.

And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.

مدّت مدیدی ایشان را در كنیسه‌ها می‌زدم و سعی می‌كردم آنان را به انكار ایمانشان مجبور سازم. خشم و غضب من به جایی رسید كه تا شهرهای دوردست آنها را تعقیب می‌كردم و آزار می‌رساندم.

Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,

«در چنین حالی با داشتن اختیارات تامّ و دستوراتی از جانب سران كاهنان به دمشق می‌رفتم كه

At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.

در هنگام ظهر در بین راه، ای پادشاه، نوری از آسمان روشنتر از نور خورشید به دور من و همسفرانم تابید.

And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

همگی به زمین افتادیم. بعد من صدایی شنیدم كه به زبان عبری به من می‌گفت 'ای شائول، ای شائول، چرا بر من جفا می‌كنی؟ بر میخها لگد‌زدن كار آسانی نیست.'

And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.

پرسیدم: 'خداوندا تو كیستی؟' خداوند گفت: 'من همان عیسایی هستم كه تو به من جفا می‌رسانی.

But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;

بلند شو و روی پای خود بایست. من به تو ظاهر شدم تا تو را به خدمت خود منصوب كنم. تو باید دربارهٔ آنچه امروز دیده‌ای و آنچه در آینده خواهی دید شهادت دهی.

Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,

من تو را از دست این قوم و نیز از دست ملّتهای بیگانه كه تو را پیش آنان می‌فرستم خواهم رهانید. تو را می‌فرستم

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

تا چشمهای آنان را باز كنی و ایشان را از تاریكی به روشنایی و از قلمرو شیطان به سوی خدا بازگردانی تا از راه ایمان به من، گناهانشان آمرزیده شود و در بین مقدّسین خدا سهمی داشته باشند.'

Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:

«بنابراین ای اغریپاس پادشاه، من نسبت به رؤیای آسمانی نافرمانی نكردم،

But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judæa, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

بلكه اول به یهودیان ساكن دمشق و اورشلیم و سرتاسر یهودیه و سپس در میان ملل غیر یهود اعلام می‌كردم كه باید توبه كنند و به‌ سوی خدا برگردند و طوری زندگی كنند كه شایستهٔ این توبه باشد.

For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me.

به همین دلیل یهودیان مرا در معبد بزرگ گرفتند و می‌خواستند مرا بكشند.

Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:

امّا به یاری پروردگار امروز در اینجا ایستاده‌ام و به همه، به كوچک و بزرگ، شهادت می‌دهم و چیزی جز آنچه انبیا و موسی از پیش خبر داده‌اند به زبان نمی‌آورم،

That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

یعنی مسیح باید متحمّل درد و رنج شود و نخستین كسی باشد كه پس از مرگ زنده می‌شود تا طلوع نور را به این قوم و ملل دیگر اعلام فرماید.»

And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.

وقتی دفاع پولس به اینجا رسید، فستوس فریاد زد: «ای پولس، عقلت را از دست داده‌ای! زیادی علم تو را دیوانه كرده است.»

But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.

پولس پاسخ داد: «خیر عالیجناب فستوس، دیوانه نیستم، بلكه در كمال هشیاری عین حقیقت را بیان می‌كنم.

For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.

پادشاه از این چیزها اطّلاع دارند و من می‌توانم آزادانه پیش آن ‌جناب صحبت كنم. فكر نمی‌كنم در این باره چیزی از نظر ایشان دور مانده باشد، زیرا هیچ‌یک از آنها در خفا صورت نگرفته است.

King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.

ای اغریپاس پادشاه، آیا شما به انبیا عقیده دارید؟ می‌دانم كه عقیده دارید.»

Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

اغریپاس به پولس گفت: «خیال می‌كنی به این زودی می‌توانی مرا مسیحی كنی؟»

And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

پولس گفت: «از خدا می‌خواهم كه دیر یا زود نه تنها حضرتعالی بلكه جمیع كسانی‌كه امروز سخنان مرا می‌شنوند مثل من بشوند، البتّه نه مثل من در این زنجیرها.»

And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them:

آنگاه پادشاه از جا برخاست و فرماندار و برنیكی و بقیّهٔ حاضران هم برخاستند.

And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.

وقتی از تالار بیرون رفتند به یكدیگر گفتند: «این شخص كاری كه مستوجب اعدام یا زندان باشد انجام نداده است.»

Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Cæsar.

اغریپاس به فستوس گفت: «اگر از قیصر دادخواهی نكرده بود، می‌توانست آزاد شود.»
