Job 14

انسان که از زن زاییده می‌شود، عمرش کوتاه و سراسر زحمت است.

Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

همچون گُل می‌شکفد و بزودی پژمرده می‌شود و مانند سایه‌ای زودگذر و ناپایدار است.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

پس ای خدا، چرا بر چنین موجودی این‌قدر سخت می‌گیری و از او بازخواست می‌‌کنی؟

And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

هیچ‌کس نمی‌تواند از یک چیز ناپاک چیزی پاک به دست آورد.

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

طول عمر و شمارهٔ ماههای عمرش را تو از پیش تعیین نموده‌ای و کسی نمی‌تواند آن را تغییر بدهد.

Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

پس از خطای او چشم بپوش و او را به حال خودش بگذار تا پیش از اینکه با زندگی وداع کند، لحظه‌ای آسوده باشد.

Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

برای یک درخت این امید هست که اگر قطع گردد، دوباره سبز شود و شاخه‌های تازهٔ دیگری بیاورد.

For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

هرچند ریشه‌اش در زمین کهنه شود و تنه‌اش در خاک بپوسد،

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

بازهم وقتی‌که آب به آن برسد، مثل یک نهال تازه جوانه می‌زند و شکوفه می‌آورد.

Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

امّا انسان وقتی‌که مُرد فاسد می‌شود و از بین می‌رود و کجایند آنها؟

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

مانند آب دریا که بخار می‌شود و رودخانه‌ای که خشک می‌گردد،

As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

انسان هم به خواب ابدی فرو می‌رود و تا نیست شدن آسمانها برنمی‌خیزد و کسی او را بیدار نمی‌کند.

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

ای کاش مرا تا وقتی‌که غضبت فرو نشیند در زیر خاک پنهان می‌کردی؛ و باز مرا در یک زمان معیّن دوباره به یاد می‌آوردی.

O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

وقتی انسان می‌میرد، آیا دوباره زنده می‌شود؟ امّا من در انتظار آن هستم که روزهای سخت زندگی‌ام پایان یابد و دوران شادکامی فرا رسد.

If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

آن وقت تو مرا صدا می‌زنی و من جواب می‌دهم و تو از دیدن این مخلوقت خوشحال می‌شوی.

Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

تو مراقب هر قدم من می‌باشی و گناهانم را در نظر نمی‌گیری.

For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

مرا از گناه پاک می‌سازی و خطاهایم را می‌پوشانی.

My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

زمانی می‌رسد که کوهها فرو می‌ریزند و از بین می‌روند. سنگها از جایشان کنده می‌شوند،

And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

آب، سنگها را می‌ساید و سیلابها خاک زمین را می‌شوید. به همین ترتیب تمام امیدهای انسان را نقش برآب می‌سازی.

The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

تو بر او غالب می‌شوی، و او را به چنگ مرگ می‌فرستی و برای ابد از بین می‌بری.

Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

اگر فرزندانش به جاه و جلال برسند، او آگاه نمی‌شود و هرگاه خوار و حقیر گردند، بازهم بی‌اطّلاع می‌ماند.

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

او فقط درد خود را احساس می‌کند و برای خود ماتم می‌گیرد.

But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
