Acts 23

Phao-lô mắt chăm chỉ trên tòa công luận, nói rằng: Hỡi các anh em, trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời, tôi đã ăn ở trọn lương tâm tử tế cho đến ngày nay.

And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

Nhưng thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm là A-na-nia biểu mấy kẻ đứng gần Phao-lô vả miệng người.

And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

Phao-lô bèn nói cùng người rằng: Hỡi bức tường tô trắng kia, Ðức Chúa Trời sẽ đánh ông; ông ngồi để xử đoán tôi theo luật pháp, mà lại không kể luật pháp, biểu người đánh tôi!

Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

Những kẻ đứng đó nói rằng: Ngươi nhiếc móc thầy cả thượng phẩm của Ðức Chúa Trời sao!

And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?

Phao-lô trả lời rằng: Hỡi anh em, tôi chẳng biết là thầy cả thượng phẩm; vì có chép rằng: Chớ sỉ nhục người cai trị dân mình.

Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

Phao-lô biết trong bọn họ phần thì người Sa-đu-sê, phần thì người Pha-ri-si, bèn kêu lên trước tòa công luận rằng: Hỡi anh em, tôi là người Pha-ri-si, con của dòng Pha-ri-si. Ấy là vì sự trông cậy của chúng ta và sự sống lại của những kẻ chết mà tôi phải chịu xử đoán.

But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

Người vừa nói xong như vậy, thì sự cãi lẫy nổi lên giữa người Pha-ri-si với người Sa-đu-sê, và hội đồng chia phe ra.

And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.

Vì chưng người Sa-đu-sê quyết rằng không có sự sống lại, cũng không có thiên sứ, thần chi hết, còn người Pha-ri-si lại nhận cả hai điều tin ấy.

For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

Tiếng kêu la lớn liền dậy lên. Có mấy thầy thông giáo về dòng Pha-ri-si đứng dậy cãi lẫy cùng kẻ khác rằng: Chúng ta chẳng thấy trong người nầy có điều ác gì. Nào ai biết chẳng phải thần hoặc thiên sứ đã nói cùng người?

And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

Vì sự rối loạn càng thêm, quản cơ e Phao-lô bị chúng phân thây chăng, nên truyền quân kéo xuống, đặng cướp người ra khỏi giữa đám họ và đem về trong đồn.

And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.

Qua đêm sau, Chúa hiện đến cùng người mà phán rằng: Hãy giục lòng mạnh mẽ, ngươi đã làm chứng cho ta tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem thể nào, thì cũng phải làm chứng cho ta tại thành Rô-ma thể ấy.

And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

Ðến sáng, người Giu-đa họp đảng lập mưu, mà thề nguyện rằng chẳng ăn chẳng uống cho đến giết được Phao-lô.

And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

Có hơn bốn mươi người đã lập mưu đó.

And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

Họ đến kiếm các thầy tế lễ cả và các trưởng lão mà rằng: Chúng tôi đã thề với nhau rằng chẳng ăn chi hết cho đến lúc giết được Phao-lô.

And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

Vậy bây giờ các ông với tòa công luận hãy xin quản cơ bắt nó đến đứng trước mặt các ông, như là muốn tra xét việc nó cho kỹ càng hơn nữa; còn chúng tôi sửa soạn sẵn để khi nó chưa đến đây thì giết đi.

Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

Nhưng có con trai của chị Phao-lô biết được mưu gian ấy, đến nơi đồn, vào nói trước cho Phao-lô.

And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

Phao-lô bèn gọi một đội trưởng mà nói rằng: hãy đem gã trai trẻ nầy đến cùng quan quản cơ, chàng có việc muốn báo tin.

Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

Vậy, đội trưởng đem chàng đi, dẫn đến nhà quản cơ, và thưa rằng: Tên tù Phao-lô có gọi tôi biểu đem gã trai trẻ nầy đến cùng quan, chàng có việc muốn nói.

So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

Quản cơ nắm tay người trai trẻ, kéo xê ra, hỏi rằng: Ngươi có việc gì báo tin cùng ta?

Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

Thưa rằng: Người Giu-đa đã định xin quan, đến ngày mai, bắt Phao-lô đứng trước tòa công luận, như là họ muốn tra xét việc của người cho kỹ càng hơn.

And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

Nhưng xin quan chớ tin họ, vì có hơn bốn mươi người trong bọn họ lập kế hại Phao-lô, đã thề nguyện với nhau chẳng ăn uống chi hết trước khi chưa giết được người; hiện bây giờ, họ đã sắm sẵn, chỉ đợi quan trả lời đó thôi.

But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.

Quản cơ cho gã trai trẻ ấy về, cấm không cho nói với ai về điều người đã tỏ ra cùng mình.

So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

Ðoạn, quản cơ đòi hai viên đội trưởng, dặn rằng: Vừa giờ thứ ba đêm nay, hãy sắm sẵn hai trăm quân, bảy mươi lính kỵ, hai trăm lính cầm giáo, đặng đi đến thành Sê-sa-rê.

And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Cæsarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

Lại cũng phải sắm ngựa nữa, để đưa Phao-lô vô sự đến nơi quan tổng đốc Phê-lít.

And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

Người lại viết cho quan đó một bức thơ như sau nầy:

And he wrote a letter after this manner:

Cơ-lốt Ly-sia chúc bình an cho quan lớn tổng đốc Phê-lít!

Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.

Dân Giu-đa đã bắt người nầy, toan giết đi, khi tôi đã đem quân đến thình lình mà cướp người ra khỏi, vì đã nghe người là quốc dân Rô-ma.

This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.

Bởi tôi muốn biết vì cớ nào họ cáo người, nên giải người đến tòa công luận.

And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:

Tôi thấy người bị cáo mấy việc về luật pháp họ, nhưng họ không kiện người về một tội nào đáng chết hay đáng tù cả.

Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

Song tôi có nghe người ta tính kế hại người nầy, nên lập tức sai người đến nơi quan, và cũng cho các kẻ cáo người biết rằng phải đến trước mặt quan mà đối nại.

And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.

Vậy, quân lính đem Phao-lô đi theo như mạng lịnh mình đã lãnh đương ban đêm, điệu đến thành An-ti-ba-tri.

Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.

Sáng ngày, lính kỵ đi với người, còn quân khác trở về đồn.

On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:

những người nầy tới thành Sê-sa-rê, đưa thơ cho quan tổng đốc và đem nộp Phao-lô.

Who, when they came to Cæsarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

Quan tổng đốc đọc thơ rồi, bèn hỏi Phao-lô vốn ở tỉnh nào, vừa biết người quê tỉnh Si-li-si,

And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;

thì rằng: Lúc nào bọn nguyên cáo đến đây, ta sẽ nghe ngươi. Ðoạn, truyền giữ Phao-lô lại trong nơi công đàng Hê-rốt.

I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
