II Samuel 14

Bấy giờ, Giô-áp, con trai của Xê-ru-gia, thấy lòng vua hướng về Áp-sa-lôm,

Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was toward Absalom.

thì sai đi tìm tại Thê-cô-a một người đờn bà khôn khéo, mà dặn nàng rằng: Hãy làm bộ có tang, mặc áo chế, chớ xức dầu trên đầu nàng, song hãy có dáng một người đờn bà đã từ lâu ngày khóc một kẻ chết.

And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead:

Ðoạn, hãy vào đền vua, tâu cùng vua theo cách nầy. Giô-áp bèn để trong miệng nàng các lời nàng phải nói.

And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.

Vậy, người đờn bà ở Thê-cô-a đi đến cùng vua, sấp mình xuống đất mà lạy, rồi tâu rằng: Lạy vua, xin hãy cứu tôi!

And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.

Vua nói: Ngươi muốn chi? Nàng thưa rằng: Hỡi ôi! tôi góa bụa, chồng tôi đã chết.

And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.

Kẻ đòi vua vốn có hai con trai; chúng nó đã đánh lộn với nhau ở ngoài đồng, và vì không ai can, nên đứa nầy đánh đứa kia chết.

And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and slew him.

Vì đó, cả dòng họ đều dấy lên nghịch cùng con đòi của vua, và nói rằng: Hãy nộp cho chúng ta kẻ đã giết em mình, chúng ta muốn giết nó, để báo thù em nó mà nó đã giết; và mặc dầu nó là kẻ kế nghiệp, chúng ta cũng sẽ diệt nó. Vậy, chúng toan tắt đóm lửa còn tại cho tôi, không để cho chồng tôi hoặc danh, hoặc dòng dõi gì trên mặt đất.

And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.

Vua nói cùng người đờn bà rằng: Hãy trở về nhà ngươi; ta sẽ truyền lịnh về việc ngươi.

And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house, and I will give charge concerning thee.

Người đờn bà Thê-cô-a thưa cùng vua rằng: Lạy vua chúa tôi, nguyện lỗi đổ lại trên tôi và trên nhà cha tôi, nguyện vua và ngôi vua không can dự đến!

And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house: and the king and his throne be guiltless.

Vua tiếp: Nếu có ai hăm dọa ngươi nữa, hãy dẫn nó đến ta. Nó được chẳng còn dám đụng đến ngươi đâu nữa.

And the king said, Whosoever saith ought unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.

Nàng tiếp rằng: Tôi cầu xin vua hãy chỉ Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của vua làm chứng rằng kẻ báo thù huyết chớ làm hại tôi càng nặng hơn, và giết con trai tôi. Vua đáp: Ta chỉ Ðức Giê-hô-va hằng sống mà thề rằng, một sợi tóc sẽ chẳng rụng xuống khỏi đầu của con trai ngươi!

Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the LORD thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.

Người đờn bà lại tiếp: Xin cho phép con đòi vua còn tâu một lời cùng vua chúa tôi nữa. Vua đáp: Hãy nói.

Then the woman said, Let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.

Người đờn bà nói: Vậy thì sao đối cùng dân sự của Ðức Chúa Trời, vua chẳng đoán xét đồng một thể? Vua phán lời đó giống như kẻ có tội, vì vua không đòi về đứa con trai mà vua đã đày đi.

And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished.

Vì rốt lại, chúng ta là kẻ hay chết, giống như nước chảy trên đất, không hốt lại được. Nhưng Ðức Chúa Trời không cất mạng sống đi, Ngài biết tìm cách thế đặng không đẩy kẻ bị đầy cách xa Ngài.

For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.

Bấy giờ, nếu tôi đến tâu cùng vua chúa tôi, ấy vì dân sự làm cho tôi run sợ. Con đòi vua có nghĩ rằng: Mình phải tâu cùng vua, có lẽ vua sẽ làm điều con đòi vua cầu xin.

Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.

Phải, vua sẽ nghe con đòi vua mà giải cứu nó khỏi tay kẻ muốn diệt chúng tôi, và tôi và con trai tôi, khỏi sản nghiệp của Ðức Chúa Trời.

For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

Vậy, con đòi vua đã nghĩ rằng: Chớ chi lời của vua chúa tôi ban cho chúng tôi sự an nghỉ; vì vua chúa tôi khác nào một thiên sứ của Ðức Chúa Trời, hiểu sự lành và sự dữ. Nguyện Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của vua ở cùng vua!

Then thine handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the LORD thy God will be with thee.

Vua nói tiếp cùng người đờn bà rằng: Chớ dấu ta chi hết về điều ta sẽ hỏi ngươi. Người đờn bà thưa rằng: Xin vua chúa tôi hãy hỏi.

Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.

Vua hỏi: Có phải Giô-áp đã đặt tay vào mọi điều đó chăng? Người đờn bà thưa rằng: Vua chúa tôi ôi, tôi chỉ mạng sống của vua mà thề, người ta không thế xít qua bên hữu hoặc bên tả, đặng khỏi điều vua chúa tôi mới nói đó. Phải, ấy là Giô-áp, tôi tớ của vua, đã truyền lịnh cho tôi, và để các lời nầy trong miệng con đòi vua.

And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid:

Giô-áp, tôi tớ của vua, đã làm như vậy, để làm cho việc nầy thành ra cách mới. Nhưng chúa tôi là khôn ngoan như thiên sứ của Ðức Chúa Trời, hiểu rõ mọi việc đã xảy ra trên đất.

To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.

Vua bèn nói cùng Giô-áp rằng: Vậy vì ngươi đã làm việc nầy, hãy đi đòi gã trai trẻ Áp-sa-lôm trở về.

And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again.

Giô-áp sấp mình xuống đất lạy, và chúc phước cho vua, mà rằng: Vua chúa tôi ôi, ngày nay tôi tớ vua biết rằng nó đã được ơn trước mặt vua; vì vua đã làm điều tôi tớ vua đã cầu xin Ngài.

And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, To day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.

Giô-áp bèn chổi dậy, đi đến Ghê-su-rơ, đem Áp-sa-lôm về Giê-ru-sa-lem.

So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

Vua bèn nói rằng: Nó phải ở trong nhà nó, chớ ra mặt trước mặt ta. Ấy vậy, Áp-sa-lôm rút ở trong nhà mình, không ra mắt vua.

And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king's face.

Vả, trong cả Y-sơ-ra-ên chẳng có một người nào được khen chuộng về nhan sắc mình như Áp-sa-lôm; nơi mình người, từ bàn chơn cho đến chót đầu, chẳng có tì vít gì hết.

But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

Mỗi năm người hớt tóc mình, vì nặng làm cho người bất tiện, thì tóc người cân được hai trăm siếc-lơ, theo cân của vua.

And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year's end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king's weight.

Áp-sa-lôm sanh ba con trai và một con gái, tên là Ta-ma; nàng là người nữ rất lịch sự.

And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.

Áp-sa-lôm ở tại Giê-ru-sa-lem trọn hai năm, không ra mắt vua.

So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face.

Kế đó, Áp-sa-lôm đòi Giô-áp đặng sai người đi đến cùng vua; nhưng Giô-áp không chịu đến gần người. Áp-sa-lôm đòi người lại một lần thứ nhì, song Giô-áp lại từ chối, không muốn đến.

Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come.

Áp-sa-lôm bèn nói cùng các tôi tớ mình rằng: Hãy xem ruộng của Giô-áp, là ruộng lúa mạch kia, ở gần bên ruộng ta; hãy đi châm lửa vào ruộng ấy. Các tôi tớ của Áp-sa-lôm bèn châm lửa vào ruộng đó.

Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab's field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.

Bấy giờ, Giô-áp đứng dậy, đến cùng Áp-sa-lôm trong nhà người mà nói rằng: Cớ sao các tôi tớ ngươi có châm lửa vào ruộng ta?

Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?

Áp-sa-lôm nói với người rằng: Hãy đến đây, ta sẽ sai ngươi đến cùng vua, đặng nói rằng: Tôi đã ở Ghê-su-rơ trở về làm chi? Thà tôi còn ở đó thì hơn. Vậy bây giờ, tôi muốn ra mắt vua; ví bằng tôi có tội ác gì, xin vua hãy giết tôi đi.

And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.

Vậy, Giô-áp đi đến vua, thuật lại các lời ấy. Vua bèn đòi Áp-sa-lôm đến; người vào đền vua, sấp mình xuống trước mặt vau, và vua hôn Áp-sa-lôm.

So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.
