Matthew 3

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

اُن دنوں میں یحییٰ بپتسمہ دینے والا آیا اور یہودیہ کے ریگستان میں اعلان کرنے لگا،

And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

”توبہ کرو، کیونکہ آسمان کی بادشاہی قریب آ گئی ہے۔“

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

یحییٰ وہی ہے جس کے بارے میں یسعیاہ نبی نے فرمایا، ’ریگستان میں ایک آواز پکار رہی ہے، رب کی راہ تیار کرو! اُس کے راستے سیدھے بناؤ۔‘

And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

یحییٰ اونٹوں کے بالوں کا لباس پہنے اور کمر پر چمڑے کا پٹکا باندھے رہتا تھا۔ خوراک کے طور پر وہ ٹڈیاں اور جنگلی شہد کھاتا تھا۔

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

لوگ یروشلم، پورے یہودیہ اور دریائے یردن کے پورے علاقے سے نکل کر اُس کے پاس آئے۔

And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

اور اپنے گناہوں کو تسلیم کر کے اُنہوں نے دریائے یردن میں یحییٰ سے بپتسمہ لیا۔

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

بہت سے فریسی اور صدوقی بھی وہاں آئے جہاں وہ بپتسمہ دے رہا تھا۔ اُنہیں دیکھ کر اُس نے کہا، ”اے زہریلے سانپ کے بچو! کس نے تمہیں آنے والے غضب سے بچنے کی ہدایت کی؟

Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

اپنی زندگی سے ظاہر کرو کہ تم نے واقعی توبہ کی ہے۔

And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

یہ خیال مت کرو کہ ہم تو بچ جائیں گے کیونکہ ابراہیم ہمارا باپ ہے۔ مَیں تم کو بتاتا ہوں کہ اللہ اِن پتھروں سے بھی ابراہیم کے لئے اولاد پیدا کر سکتا ہے۔

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

اب تو عدالت کی کلہاڑی درختوں کی جڑوں پر رکھی ہوئی ہے۔ ہر درخت جو اچھا پھل نہ لائے کاٹا اور آگ میں جھونکا جائے گا۔

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

مَیں تو تم توبہ کرنے والوں کو پانی سے بپتسمہ دیتا ہوں، لیکن ایک آنے والا ہے جو مجھ سے بڑا ہے۔ مَیں اُس کے جوتوں کو اُٹھانے کے بھی لائق نہیں۔ وہ تمہیں روح القدس اور آگ سے بپتسمہ دے گا۔

Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

وہ ہاتھ میں چھاج پکڑے ہوئے اناج کو بھوسے سے الگ کرنے کے لئے تیار کھڑا ہے۔ وہ گاہنے کی جگہ بالکل صاف کر کے اناج کو اپنے گودام میں جمع کرے گا۔ لیکن بھوسے کو وہ ایسی آگ میں جھونکے گا جو بجھنے کی نہیں۔“

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

پھر عیسیٰ گلیل سے دریائے یردن کے کنارے آیا تاکہ یحییٰ سے بپتسمہ لے۔

But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

لیکن یحییٰ نے اُسے روکنے کی کوشش کر کے کہا، ”مجھے تو آپ سے بپتسمہ لینے کی ضرورت ہے، تو پھر آپ میرے پاس کیوں آئے ہیں؟“

And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

عیسیٰ نے جواب دیا، ”اب ہونے ہی دے، کیونکہ مناسب ہے کہ ہم یہ کرتے ہوئے اللہ کی راست مرضی پوری کریں ۔“ اِس پر یحییٰ مان گیا۔

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

بپتسمہ لینے پر عیسیٰ فوراً پانی سے نکلا۔ اُسی لمحے آسمان کھل گیا اور اُس نے اللہ کے روح کو دیکھا جو کبوتر کی طرح اُتر کر اُس پر ٹھہر گیا۔

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

ساتھ ساتھ آسمان سے ایک آواز سنائی دی، ”یہ میرا پیارا فرزند ہے، اِس سے مَیں خوش ہوں۔“
