Joshua 8

And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

پھر رب نے یشوع سے کہا، ”مت ڈر اور مت گھبرا بلکہ تمام فوجی اپنے ساتھ لے کر عَی شہر پر حملہ کر۔ کیونکہ مَیں نے عَی کے بادشاہ، اُس کی قوم، اُس کے شہر اور ملک کو تیرے ہاتھ میں کر دیا ہے۔

And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

لازم ہے کہ تُو عَی اور اُس کے بادشاہ کے ساتھ وہ کچھ کرے جو تُو نے یریحو اور اُس کے بادشاہ کے ساتھ کیا تھا۔ لیکن اِس مرتبہ تم اُس کا مال اور مویشی اپنے پاس رکھ سکتے ہو۔ حملہ کرتے وقت شہر کے پیچھے گھات لگا۔“

So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

چنانچہ یشوع پورے لشکر کے ساتھ عَی پر حملہ کرنے کے لئے نکلا۔ اُس نے اپنے سب سے اچھے فوجیوں میں سے 30,000 کو چن لیا اور اُنہیں رات کے وقت عَی کے خلاف بھیج کر

And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

حکم دیا، ”دھیان دیں کہ آپ شہر کے پیچھے گھات لگائیں۔ سب کے سب شہر کے قریب ہی تیار رہیں۔

And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,

اِتنے میں مَیں باقی مردوں کے ساتھ شہر کے قریب آ جاؤں گا۔ اور جب شہر کے لوگ پہلے کی طرح ہمارے ساتھ لڑنے کے لئے نکلیں گے تو ہم اُن کے آگے آگے بھاگ جائیں گے۔

(For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.

وہ ہمارے پیچھے پڑ جائیں گے اور یوں ہم اُنہیں شہر سے دُور لے جائیں گے، کیونکہ وہ سمجھیں گے کہ ہم اِس دفعہ بھی پہلے کی طرح اُن سے بھاگ رہے ہیں۔

Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

پھر آپ اُس جگہ سے نکلیں جہاں آپ گھات میں بیٹھے ہوں گے اور شہر پر قبضہ کر لیں۔ رب آپ کا خدا اُسے آپ کے ہاتھ میں کر دے گا۔

And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

جب شہر آپ کے قبضے میں ہو گا تو اُسے جلا دینا۔ وہی کریں جو رب نے فرمایا ہے۔ میری اِن ہدایات پر دھیان دیں۔“

Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Beth–el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

یہ کہہ کر یشوع نے اُنہیں عَی کی طرف بھیج دیا۔ وہ روانہ ہو کر عَی کے مغرب میں گھات میں بیٹھ گئے۔ یہ جگہ بیت ایل اور عَی کے درمیان تھی۔ لیکن یشوع نے یہ رات باقی لوگوں کے ساتھ خیمہ گاہ میں گزاری۔

And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

اگلے دن صبح سویرے یشوع نے آدمیوں کو جمع کر کے اُن کا جائزہ لیا۔ پھر وہ اسرائیل کے بزرگوں کے ساتھ اُن کے آگے آگے عَی کی طرف چل دیا۔

And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

جو لشکر اُس کے ساتھ تھا وہ چلتے چلتے عَی کے سامنے پہنچ گیا۔ اُنہوں نے شہر کے شمال میں اپنے خیمے لگائے۔ اُن کے اور شہر کے درمیان وادی تھی۔

And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Beth–el and Ai, on the west side of the city.

جو شہر کے مغرب میں عَی اور بیت ایل کے درمیان گھات لگائے بیٹھے تھے وہ تقریباً 5,000 مرد تھے۔

And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

یوں شہر کے مغرب اور شمال میں آدمی لڑنے کے لئے تیار ہوئے۔ رات کے وقت یشوع وادی میں پہنچ گیا۔

And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

جب عَی کے بادشاہ نے شمال میں اسرائیلیوں کو دیکھا تو اُس نے جلدی جلدی تیاریاں کیں۔ اگلے دن صبح سویرے وہ اپنے آدمیوں کے ساتھ شہر سے نکلا تاکہ اسرائیلیوں کے ساتھ لڑے۔ یہ جگہ وادیِ یردن کی طرف تھی۔ بادشاہ کو معلوم نہ ہوا کہ اسرائیلی شہر کے پیچھے گھات میں بیٹھے ہیں۔

And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

جب عَی کے مرد نکلے تو یشوع اور اُس کا لشکر شکست کا اظہار کر کے ریگستان کی طرف بھاگنے لگے۔

And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

تب عَی کے تمام مردوں کو اسرائیلیوں کا تعاقب کرنے کے لئے بُلایا گیا، اور یشوع کے پیچھے بھاگتے بھاگتے وہ شہر سے دُور نکل گئے۔

And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth–el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

ایک مرد بھی عَی یا بیت ایل میں نہ رہا بلکہ سب کے سب اسرائیلیوں کے پیچھے پڑ گئے۔ نہ صرف یہ بلکہ اُنہوں نے شہر کا دروازہ کھلا چھوڑ دیا۔

And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.

پھر رب نے یشوع سے کہا، ”جو شمشیر تیرے ہاتھ میں ہے اُسے عَی کے خلاف اُٹھائے رکھ، کیونکہ مَیں یہ شہر تیرے ہاتھ میں کر دوں گا۔“ یشوع نے ایسا ہی کیا،

And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.

اور جوں ہی اُس نے اپنی شمشیر سے عَی کی طرف اشارہ کیا گھات میں بیٹھے آدمی جلدی سے اپنی جگہ سے نکل آئے اور دوڑ دوڑ کر شہر پر جھپٹ پڑے۔ اُنہوں نے اُس پر قبضہ کر کے جلدی سے اُسے جلا دیا۔

And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

جب عَی کے آدمیوں نے مُڑ کر نظر ڈالی تو دیکھا کہ شہر سے دھوئیں کے بادل اُٹھ رہے ہیں۔ لیکن اب اُن کے لئے بھی بچنے کا کوئی راستہ نہ رہا، کیونکہ جو اسرائیلی اب تک اُن کے آگے آگے ریگستان کی طرف بھاگ رہے تھے وہ اچانک مُڑ کر تعاقب کرنے والوں پر ٹوٹ پڑے۔

And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

کیونکہ جب یشوع اور اُس کے ساتھ کے آدمیوں نے دیکھا کہ گھات میں بیٹھے اسرائیلیوں نے شہر پر قبضہ کر لیا ہے اور کہ شہر سے دھواں اُٹھ رہا ہے تو اُنہوں نے مُڑ کر عَی کے آدمیوں پر حملہ کر دیا۔

And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

ساتھ ساتھ شہر میں داخل ہوئے اسرائیلی شہر سے نکل کر پیچھے سے اُن سے لڑنے لگے۔ چنانچہ عَی کے آدمی بیچ میں پھنس گئے۔ اسرائیلیوں نے سب کو قتل کر دیا، اور نہ کوئی بچا، نہ کوئی فرار ہو سکا۔

And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

صرف عَی کے بادشاہ کو زندہ پکڑا اور یشوع کے پاس لایا گیا۔

And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

عَی کے مردوں کا تعاقب کرتے کرتے اُن سب کو کھلے میدان اور ریگستان میں تلوار سے مار دینے کے بعد اسرائیلیوں نے عَی شہر میں واپس آ کر تمام باشندوں کو ہلاک کر دیا۔

And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

اُس دن عَی کے تمام مرد اور عورتیں مارے گئے، کُل 12,000 افراد۔

For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

کیونکہ یشوع نے اُس وقت تک اپنی شمشیر اُٹھائے رکھی جب تک عَی کے تمام باشندوں کو ہلاک نہ کر دیا گیا۔

Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.

صرف شہر کے مویشی اور لُوٹا ہوا مال بچ گیا، کیونکہ اِس دفعہ رب نے ہدایت کی تھی کہ اسرائیلی اُسے لے جا سکتے ہیں۔

And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.

یشوع نے عَی کو جلا کر اُسے ہمیشہ کے لئے ملبے کا ڈھیر بنا دیا۔ یہ مقام آج تک ویران ہے۔

And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.

عَی کے بادشاہ کی لاش اُس نے شام تک درخت سے لٹکائے رکھی۔ پھر جب سورج ڈوبنے لگا تو یشوع نے اپنے لوگوں کو حکم دیا کہ بادشاہ کی لاش کو درخت سے اُتار دیں۔ تب اُنہوں نے اُسے شہر کے دروازے کے پاس پھینک کر اُس پر پتھر کا بڑا ڈھیر لگا دیا۔ یہ ڈھیر آج تک موجود ہے۔

Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,

اُس وقت یشوع نے رب اسرائیل کے خدا کی تعظیم میں عیبال پہاڑ پر قربان گاہ بنائی

As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.

جس طرح رب کے خادم موسیٰ نے اسرائیلیوں کو حکم دیا تھا۔ اُس نے اُسے موسیٰ کی شریعت کی کتاب میں درج ہدایات کے مطابق بنایا۔ قربان گاہ کے پتھر تراشے بغیر لگائے گئے، اور اُن پر لوہے کا آلہ نہ چلایا گیا۔ اُس پر اُنہوں نے رب کو بھسم ہونے والی اور سلامتی کی قربانیاں پیش کیں۔

And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

وہاں یشوع نے اسرائیلیوں کی موجودگی میں پتھروں پر موسیٰ کی شریعت دوبارہ لکھ دی۔

And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

پھر بزرگوں، نگہبانوں اور قاضیوں کے ساتھ مل کر تمام اسرائیلی دو گروہوں میں تقسیم ہوئے۔ پردیسی بھی اُن میں شامل تھے۔ ایک گروہ گرزیم پہاڑ کے سامنے کھڑا ہوا اور دوسرا عیبال پہاڑ کے سامنے۔ دونوں گروہ ایک دوسرے کے مقابل کھڑے رہے جبکہ لاوی کے قبیلے کے امام اُن کے درمیان کھڑے ہوئے۔ اُنہوں نے رب کے عہد کا صندوق اُٹھا رکھا تھا۔ سب کچھ اُن ہدایات کے عین مطابق ہوا جو رب کے خادم موسیٰ نے اسرائیلیوں کو برکت دینے کے لئے دی تھیں۔

And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

پھر یشوع نے شریعت کی تمام باتوں کی تلاوت کی، اُس کی برکات بھی اور اُس کی لعنتیں بھی۔ سب کچھ اُس نے ویسا ہی پڑھا جیسا کہ شریعت کی کتاب میں درج تھا۔

There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.

جو بھی حکم موسیٰ نے دیا تھا اُس کا ایک بھی لفظ نہ رہا جس کی تلاوت یشوع نے تمام اسرائیلیوں کی پوری جماعت کے سامنے نہ کی ہو۔ اور سب نے یہ باتیں سنیں۔ اِس میں عورتیں، بچے اور اُن کے درمیان رہنے والے پردیسی سب شامل تھے۔
