Joshua 9

And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

اِن باتوں کی خبر دریائے یردن کے مغرب کے تمام بادشاہوں تک پہنچی، خواہ وہ پہاڑی علاقے، مغرب کے نشیبی پہاڑی علاقے یا ساحلی علاقے میں لبنان تک رہتے تھے۔ اُن کی یہ قومیں تھیں: حِتّی، اموری، کنعانی، فرِزّی، حِوّی اور یبوسی۔

That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

اب یہ یشوع اور اسرائیلیوں سے لڑنے کے لئے جمع ہوئے۔

And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

لیکن جب جِبعون شہر کے باشندوں کو پتا چلا کہ یشوع نے یریحو اور عَی کے ساتھ کیا کِیا ہے

They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

تو اُنہوں نے ایک چال چلی۔ اپنے ساتھ سفر کے لئے کھانا لے کر وہ یشوع کے پاس چل پڑے۔ اُن کے گدھوں پر خستہ حال بوریاں اور مَے کی ایسی پرانی اور گھسی پھٹی مشکیں لدی ہوئی تھیں جن کی بار بار مرمت ہوئی تھی۔

And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

مردوں نے ایسے پرانے جوتے پہن رکھے تھے جن پر جگہ جگہ پیوند لگے ہوئے تھے۔ اُن کے کپڑے بھی گھسے پھٹے تھے، اور سفر کے لئے جو روٹی اُن کے پاس تھی وہ خشک اور ٹکڑے ٹکڑے ہو گئی تھی۔

And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

ایسی حالت میں وہ یشوع کے پاس جِلجال کی خیمہ گاہ میں پہنچ گئے۔ اُنہوں نے اُس سے اور باقی اسرائیلی مردوں سے کہا، ”ہم ایک دُوردراز ملک سے آئے ہیں۔ آئیں، ہمارے ساتھ معاہدہ کریں۔“

And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?

لیکن اسرائیلیوں نے حِوّیوں سے کہا، ”شاید آپ ہمارے علاقے کے بیچ میں کہیں بستے ہیں۔ اگر ایسا ہے تو ہم کس طرح آپ سے معاہدہ کر سکتے ہیں؟“

And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

وہ یشوع سے بولے، ”ہم آپ کی خدمت کے لئے حاضر ہیں۔“ یشوع نے پوچھا، ”آپ کون ہیں اور کہاں سے آئے ہیں؟“

And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”آپ کے خادم آپ کے خدا کے نام کے باعث ایک نہایت دُوردراز ملک سے آئے ہیں۔ کیونکہ اُس کی خبر ہم تک پہنچ گئی ہے، اور ہم نے وہ سب کچھ سن لیا ہے جو اُس نے مصر میں

And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.

اور دریائے یردن کے مشرق میں رہنے والے دو بادشاہوں کے ساتھ کیا یعنی حسبون کے بادشاہ سیحون اور بسن کے بادشاہ عوج کے ساتھ جو عستارات میں رہتا تھا۔

Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

تب ہمارے بزرگوں بلکہ ہمارے ملک کے تمام باشندوں نے ہم سے کہا، ’سفر کے لئے کھانا لے کر اُن سے ملنے جائیں۔ اُن سے بات کریں کہ ہم آپ کی خدمت کے لئے حاضر ہیں۔ آئیں، ہمارے ساتھ معاہدہ کریں۔‘

This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

ہماری یہ روٹی ابھی گرم تھی جب ہم اِسے سفر کے لئے اپنے ساتھ لے کر آپ سے ملنے کے لئے اپنے گھروں سے روانہ ہوئے۔ اور اب آپ خود دیکھ سکتے ہیں کہ یہ خشک اور ٹکڑے ٹکڑے ہو گئی ہے۔

And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

اور مَے کی اِن مشکوں کی گھسی پھٹی حالت دیکھیں۔ بھرتے وقت یہ نئی اور لچک دار تھیں۔ یہی ہمارے کپڑوں اور جوتوں کی حالت بھی ہے۔ سفر کرتے کرتے یہ ختم ہو گئے ہیں۔“

And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

اسرائیلیوں نے مسافروں کا کچھ کھانا لیا۔ افسوس، اُنہوں نے رب سے ہدایت نہ مانگی۔

And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

پھر یشوع نے اُن کے ساتھ صلح کا معاہدہ کیا اور جماعت کے راہنماؤں نے قَسم کھا کر اُس کی تصدیق کی۔ معاہدے میں اسرائیل نے وعدہ کیا کہ جِبعونیوں کو جینے دے گا۔

And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

تین دن گزرے تو اسرائیلیوں کو پتا چلا کہ جِبعونی ہمارے قریب ہی اور ہمارے علاقے کے عین بیچ میں رہتے ہیں۔

And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath–jearim.

اسرائیلی روانہ ہوئے اور تیسرے دن اُن کے شہروں کے پاس پہنچے جن کے نام جِبعون، کفیرہ، بیروت اور قِریَت یعریم تھے۔

And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

لیکن چونکہ جماعت کے راہنماؤں نے رب اسرائیل کے خدا کی قَسم کھا کر اُن سے وعدہ کیا تھا اِس لئے اُنہوں نے جِبعونیوں کو ہلاک نہ کیا۔ پوری جماعت راہنماؤں پر بڑبڑانے لگی،

But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

لیکن اُنہوں نے جواب میں کہا، ”ہم نے رب اسرائیل کے خدا کی قَسم کھا کر اُن سے وعدہ کیا، اور اب ہم اُنہیں چھیڑ نہیں سکتے۔

This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

چنانچہ ہم اُنہیں جینے دیں گے اور وہ قَسم نہ توڑیں گے جو ہم نے اُن کے ساتھ کھائی۔ ایسا نہ ہو کہ اللہ کا غضب ہم پر نازل ہو جائے۔

And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

اُنہیں جینے دو۔“ پھر فیصلہ یہ ہوا کہ جِبعونی لکڑہارے اور پانی بھرنے والے بن کر پوری جماعت کی خدمت کریں۔ یوں اسرائیلی راہنماؤں کا اُن کے ساتھ وعدہ قائم رہا۔

And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

یشوع نے جِبعونیوں کو بُلا کر کہا، ”تم نے ہمیں دھوکا دے کر کیوں کہا کہ ہم آپ سے نہایت دُور رہتے ہیں حالانکہ تم ہمارے علاقے کے بیچ میں ہی رہتے ہو؟

Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

چنانچہ اب تم پر لعنت ہو۔ تم لکڑہارے اور پانی بھرنے والے بن کر ہمیشہ کے لئے میرے خدا کے گھر کی خدمت کرو گے۔“

And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”آپ کے خادموں کو صاف بتایا گیا تھا کہ رب آپ کے خدا نے اپنے خادم موسیٰ کو کیا حکم دیا تھا، کہ اُسے آپ کو پورا ملک دینا اور آپ کے آگے آگے تمام باشندوں کو ہلاک کرنا ہے۔ یہ سن کر ہم بہت ڈر گئے کہ ہماری جان نہیں بچے گی۔ اِسی لئے ہم نے یہ سب کچھ کیا۔

And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

اب ہم آپ کے ہاتھ میں ہیں۔ ہمارے ساتھ وہ کچھ کریں جو آپ کو اچھا اور ٹھیک لگتا ہے۔“

And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

چنانچہ یشوع نے اُنہیں اسرائیلیوں سے بچایا، اور اُنہوں نے جِبعونیوں کو ہلاک نہ کیا۔

And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

اُسی دن اُس نے جِبعونیوں کو لکڑہارے اور پانی بھرنے والے بنا دیا تاکہ وہ جماعت اور رب کی اُس قربان گاہ کی خدمت کریں جس کا مقام رب کو ابھی چننا تھا۔ اور یہ لوگ آج تک یہی کچھ کرتے ہیں۔
