Acts 23

And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

Ατενισας δε ο Παυλος εις το συνεδριον, ειπεν Ανδρες αδελφοι, εγω εζησα ενωπιον του Θεου μετα πασης καλης συνειδησεως μεχρι ταυτης της ημερας.

And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

Ο δε αρχιερευς Ανανιας προσεταξε τους παρεστωτας πλησιον αυτου να κτυπησωσι το στομα αυτου.

Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

Τοτε ο Παυλος ειπε προς αυτον Ο Θεος μελλει να σε κτυπηση, τοιχε ασβεστωμενε και συ καθησαι να με κρινης κατα τον νομον, και παρανομων προσταζεις να με κτυπωσιν;

And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?

Οι δε παρεστωτες ειπον Τον αρχιερεα του Θεου λοιδορεις;

Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

Και ο Παυλος ειπε Δεν ηξευρον, αδελφοι, οτι ειναι αρχιερευς διοτι ειναι γεγραμμενον. Αρχοντα του λαου σου δεν θελεις κακολογησει.

But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

Εννοησας δε ο Παυλος οτι το εν μερος ειναι Σαδδουκαιων, το δε αλλο Φαρισαιων, εκραξεν εν τω συνεδριω. Ανδρες αδελφοι, εγω ειμαι Φαρισαιος, υιος Φαρισαιου περι ελπιδος και αναστασεως νεκρων εγω κρινομαι.

And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.

Και οτε ελαλησε τουτο, εγεινε διαιρεσις των Φαρισαιων και των Σαδδουκαιων, και διηρεθη το πληθος.

For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

Διοτι οι μεν Σαδδουκαιοι λεγουσιν οτι δεν ειναι αναστασις ουδε αγγελος ουδε πνευμα, οι δε Φαρισαιοι ομολογουσιν αμφοτερα.

And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

Και εγεινε κραυγη μεγαλη, και σηκωθεντες οι γραμματεις του μερους των Φαρισαιων διεμαχοντο, λεγοντες Ουδεν κακον ευρισκομεν εν τω ανθρωπω τουτω αν δε ελαλησε προς αυτον πνευμα η αγγελος, ας μη θεομαχωμεν.

And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.

Και επειδη εγεινε μεγαλη διαιρεσις, φοβηθεις ο χιλιαρχος μη διασπαραχθη ο Παυλος υπ αυτων, προσεταξε να καταβη το στρατευμα και να αρπαση αυτον εκ μεσου αυτων και να φερη εις το φρουριον.

And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

Την δε ερχομενην νυκτα επιφανεις εις αυτον ο Κυριος, ειπε Θαρρει, Παυλε, διοτι καθως εμαρτυρησας τα περι εμου εις Ιερουσαλημ, ουτω πρεπει να μαρτυρησης και εις Ρωμην.

And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

Και οτε εγεινεν ημερα, τινες των Ιουδαιων συνομωσαντες ανεθεματισαν εαυτους, λεγοντες μητε να φαγωσι μητε να πιωσιν, εωσου φονευσωσι τον Παυλον

And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

ησαν δε πλειοτεροι των τεσσαρακοντα οι πραξαντες την συνωμοσιαν ταυτην

And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

οιτινες ελθοντες προς τους αρχιερεις και τους πρεσβυτερους, ειπον Με αναθεμα ανεθεματισαμεν εαυτους, να μη γευθωμεν μηδεν εωσου φονευσωμεν τον Παυλον.

Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

Τωρα λοιπον σεις μετα του συνεδριου μηνυσατε προς τον χιλιαρχον, να καταβιβαση αυτον αυριον προς εσας, ως μελλοντας να μαθητε ακριβεστερον τα περι αυτου ημεις δε, πριν αυτος πλησιαση, ειμεθα ετοιμοι να φονευσωμεν αυτον.

And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

Ακουσας δε την ενεδραν ο υιος της αδελφης του Παυλου, υπηγε και εισελθων εις το φρουριον απηγγειλε προς τον Παυλον.

Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

Και ο Παυλος προσκαλεσας ενα των εκατονταρχων, ειπε Φερε τον νεον τουτον προς τον χιλιαρχον διοτι εχει τι να απαγγειλη προς αυτον.

So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

Εκεινος λοιπον παραλαβων αυτον, εφερε προς τον χιλιαρχον και λεγει Ο δεσμιος Παυλος με εκραξε και με παρεκαλεσε να φερω τον νεον τουτον προς σε, διοτι εχει τι να σοι λαληση.

Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

Πιασας δε αυτον απο της χειρος ο χιλιαρχος και αποσυρθεις κατ ιδιαν, ηρωτησε, Τι ειναι εκεινο, το οποιον εχεις να μοι απαγγειλης;

And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

Ο δε ειπεν οτι οι Ιουδαιοι συνεφωνησαν να σε παρακαλεσωσι να καταβιβασης αυριον τον Παυλον εις το συνεδριον, ως θελοντες να μαθωσι τι ακριβεστερον περι αυτου.

But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.

Συ λοιπον μη πεισθης εις αυτους, διοτι ενεδρευουσιν αυτον πλειοτεροι των τεσσαρακοντα ανδρες εξ αυτων, οιτινες ανεθεματισαν εαυτους μητε να φαγωσι μητε να πιωσιν, εωσου φονευσωσιν αυτον και τωρα ειναι ετοιμοι, προσμενοντες την παρα σου υποσχεσιν.

So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

Ο χιλιαρχος λοιπον απελυσε τον νεον, παραγγειλας, να μη ειπης εις μηδενα οτι εφανερωσας ταυτα εις εμε.

And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Cæsarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

Και προσκαλεσας δυο τινας των εκατονταρχων, ειπεν Ετοιμασατε διακοσιους στρατιωτας δια να υπαγωσιν εως Καισαρειας, και εβδομηκοντα ιππεις και διακοσιους λογχοφορους, απο τριτης ωρας της νυκτος,

And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

ετοιμασατε και ζωα, δια να επικαθισωσι τον Παυλον και φερωσιν ασφαλως προς Φηλικα τον ηγεμονα

And he wrote a letter after this manner:

και εγραψεν επιστολην περιεχουσαν τον τυπον τουτον

Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.

Κλαυδιος Λυσιας προς τον κρατιστον ηγεμονα Φηλικα, χαιρειν.

This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.

Τον ανδρα τουτον, συλληφθεντα υπο των Ιουδαιων και μελλοντα να φονευθη υπ αυτων, επελθων μετα του στρατευματος εσωσα αυτον, μαθων οτι ειναι Ρωμαιος.

And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:

Θελων δε να μαθω αιτιαν, δια την οποιαν εκατηγορουν αυτον, κατεβιβασα αυτον εις το συνεδριον αυτων

Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

και ευρον αυτον εγκαλουμενον περι ζητηματων του νομου αυτων, μη εχοντα ομως μηδεν εγκλημα αξιον θανατου η δεσμων.

And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.

Και επειδη εμηνυθη προς εμε οτι μελλει να γεινη εις τον ανθρωπον επιβουλη υπο των Ιουδαιων, ευθυς επεμψα αυτον προς σε, παραγγειλας και εις τους κατηγορους να ειπωσιν ενωπιον σου τα κατ αυτου. Υγιαινε.

Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.

Οι μεν λοιπον στρατιωται κατα την δοθεισαν εις αυτους προσταγην αναλαβοντες τον Παυλον, εφεραν δια της νυκτος εις την Αντιπατριδα,

On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:

την δε επαυριον, αφησαντες τους ιππεις να υπαγωσι μετ αυτου, υπεστρεψαν εις το φρουριον

Who, when they came to Cæsarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

οιτινες εισελθοντες εις την Καισαρειαν και εγχειρισαντες την επιστολην εις τον ηγεμονα, παρεστησαν και τον Παυλον εις αυτον.

And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;

Ο δε ηγεμων, αφου ανεγνωσε την επιστολην και ηρωτησεν εκ ποιας επαρχιας ειναι και ηκουσεν οτι ειναι απο Κιλικιας,

I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.

Θελω σε ακροασθη, ειπεν, οταν και οι κατηγοροι σου ελθωσι και προσεταξε να φυλαττηται εν τω πραιτωριω του Ηρωδου.
