Numbers 20

Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

در ماه اول سال، قوم اسرائیل به بیابان صین رسیدند و در قادش اردو زدند. در آنجا مریم فوت کرد و دفن شد.

And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

جایی‌که اردو زده بودند، آب نداشت؛ بنابراین مردم به دور موسی و هارون جمع شده،

And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!

لب به شکایت گشوده گفتند: «ای کاش ما هم با خویشاوندان اسرائیلی خود، در حضور خداوند می‌مردیم.

And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?

چرا ما را در این بیابان آوردید تا با حیوانات خود در اینجا بمیریم؟

And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.

چرا ما را از مصر به این بیابان خراب و بی‌علف آوردید؟ در اینجا نه غلّه است، نه انجیر، نه تاک و نه انار. در اینجا حتّی آب هم، برای نوشیدن نداریم.»

And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.

موسی و هارون از حضور مردم به پیش دروازهٔ خیمهٔ عبادت رفتند و در آنجا به خاک افتادند و حضور با شکوه خداوند بر آنها ظاهر شد.

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

خداوند به موسی فرمود:

Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

«عصا را از جلوی صندوق پیمان بردار. بعد تو و برادرت هارون، قوم اسرائیل را جمع کنید و در پیش چشمان آنها به این صخره بگو که آب خود را جاری سازد. آن وقت می‌توانید از آن صخره به مردم و حیواناتشان آب بدهید.»

And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.

پس موسی چنانکه خداوند فرموده بود، عصا را از جلوی صندوق پیمان برداشت.

And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

بعد او و هارون همهٔ مردم را در پیش آن صخره جمع کردند و موسی به آنها گفت: «ای مردم سرکش بشنوید. آیا می‌خواهید که ما از این صخره برای شما آب بیرون بیاوریم؟»

And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

آنگاه موسی عصا را بلند کرد و دو مرتبه به صخره زد. آب فراوان جاری شد و همهٔ مردم و حیوانات آنها از آب نوشیدند.

And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

خداوند به موسی و هارون فرمود: «چون شما به من اعتماد نکردید و در نزد قوم اسرائیل به قدّوسیّت من احترام نگذاشتید، بنابراین شما آنها را به آن سرزمینی که به آنها وعده دادم، راهنمایی نمی‌کنید.»

This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.

پس آنجا را مریبه، یعنی مشاجره نامیدند، زیرا در آنجا بود که بنی‌اسرائیل با خداوند مشاجره کردند و در همان‌جا خداوند به مردم ثابت کرد که پاک و مقدّس است.

And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:

موسی قاصدانی را از قادش با این پیام نزد پادشاه اَدوم فرستاد: «ما خویشاوندان تو، یعنی از طایفهٔ اسرائیل هستیم. شما از سختی‌ها و دشواری‌هایی که ما متحمّل شده‌ایم، آگاه هستید.

How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:

همچنین می‌دانید که نیاکان ما چگونه به مصر رفتند و سالیان دراز در آنجا زندگی کردند و مصریان چگونه رفتار ناخوشایندی با نیاکان ما داشتند.

And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:

وقتی ما برای کمک نزد خدا گریستیم، او فریاد ما را شنید و فرشته‌‌ای را فرستاد و ما را از مصر بیرون آورد. حالا در قادش که در نزدیکی مرز سرزمین شماست، اردو زده‌ایم.

Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.

خواهش می‌کنیم اجازه دهید از سرزمین شما عبور کنیم. ما به کشتزارها و باغهای انگور شما داخل نمی‌شویم و از چاههای شما آب نمی‌نوشیم، بلکه از شاهراه خواهیم رفت و از آن خارج نمی‌شویم تا از سرزمین شما بیرون رویم.»

And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.

امّا پادشاه اَدوم گفت: «شما نمی‌توانید از اینجا عبور کنید و اگر بخواهید که به سرزمین ما داخل شوید، با شمشیر به مقابلهٔ شما می‌آییم.»

And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.

قاصدان اسرائیلی به او گفتند: «ما فقط از شاهراه می‌رویم و اگر ما یا حیوانات ما از آب شما بنوشیم قیمت آب را می‌پردازیم. تنها تقاضای ما این است که به ما اجازهٔ عبور بدهید.»

And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

پادشاه اَدوم گفت: «شما حق عبور از خاک ما را ندارید.» آنگاه اَدوم با لشکر عظیم خود به مقابلهٔ بنی‌اسرائیل آمد.

Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.

وقتی قوم اسرائیل دیدند که اَدومیان به آنها اجازهٔ عبور نمی‌دهند، ناچار از راه دیگری به سفر خود ادامه دادند.

And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.

بنی‌اسرائیل از قادش حرکت کردند و به کوه هور،

And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,

در مرز اَدوم رسیدند. در آنجا خداوند به هارون و موسی فرمود:

Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.

«هارون خواهد مرد و به سرزمینی که به اسرائیل وعده دادم داخل نمی‌شود، زیرا هردوی شما در کنار چشمهٔ مریبه از دستور من سرپیچی کردید.

Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor:

پس حالا هارون و پسرش، العازار را به کوه هور ببر.

And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.

در آنجا لباس کهانت را از تن هارون درآور و به تن پسرش العازار کن. هارون در همان‌جا می‌میرد و به اجداد خود می‌پیوندد.»

And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

موسی مطابق امر خداوند رفتار کرد و درحالی‌که همهٔ مردم اسرائیل تماشا می‌کردند آن سه نفر به بالای کوه هور رفتند.

And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.

در آنجا موسی لباس کهانت را از تن هارون بیرون کرد و به پسرش العازار پوشاند. هارون در بالای همان کوه جان سپرد و موسی و العازار از کوه پایین آمدند.

And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.

وقتی بنی‌اسرائیل از مرگ هارون خبر شدند، مدّت سی روز برای او عزاداری کردند.
