Acts 24

And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.

بعد از پنج روز حنانیا كاهن اعظم به اتّفاق چند نفر از مشایخ و یک وكیل دعاوی به نام تِرتُلُس به قیصریه رسیدند و شكایت خود را علیه پولس به اطلاع فرماندار رسانیدند.

And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,

وقتی پولس را احضار كردند تِرتُلُس شكایت خود را این‌طور شروع كرد: «ای فیلیكِس، حضرت اجل، با توجّه به اینكه در روزهای زمامداری شما و در سایهٔ اقدامات ارزنده‌ای كه برای بهبود وضع ملّت ما به عمل آورده‌اید، از نعمت امنیّت كامل برخوردار هستیم،

We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.

وظیفهٔ خود می‌دانیم پیوسته و در هر جا سپاسگزاری عمیق خود را تقدیم آن جناب بنماییم.

Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words.

و امّا، برای اینكه زیاد مزاحم نشویم، تقاضا دارم با آن لطف همیشگی خودتان به عرایض مختصر ما توجّه فرمایید.

For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:

به ما ثابت شده است كه این شخص یک آشوبگر فاسدی است كه در سراسر عالم میان همهٔ یهودیان اختلاف انداخته و سر دسته بدعت‌گذاران ناصری است

Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.

و حتّی سعی می‌کرد معبد بزرگ پاک ما را آلوده گرداند. امّا ما او را دستگیر كردیم. [و می‌خواستیم، مطابق قانون خودمان محاكمه كنیم.

But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,

ولی لیسیاس فرمانده آمد و با زور او را از دست ما گرفت

Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.

و به مدّعیان او دستور داد به حضور شما بیایند.] اگر خود شما از او بازجویی نمایید، حقیقت ادّعای ما برایتان روشن خواهد شد.»

And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.

یهودیان تمام حرفهای تِرتُلُس را در این باره تأیید كردند.

Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself:

وقتی فرماندار به پولس اشاره كرد او به این اتّهامات جواب داده گفت: «با اطّلاع از اینكه شما سالیان درازی است كه بر این ملّت دادگستری می‌کنید، با اطمینان خاطر در حضور شما از خود دفاع می‌کنم.

Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship.

حقیقت امر بر شما معلوم خواهد شد. از روزی كه من به زیارت اورشلیم رفته بودم، بیش از دوازده روز نمی‌گذرد

And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:

و هیچ‌کس مرا ندیده است كه در معبد بزرگ و یا در کنیسه‌ها و یا در داخل شهر با کسی مباحثه كنم و یا مردم را به گرد خود جمع نمایم.

Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.

برای اثبات اتّهاماتی كه علیه من می‌آورند، هیچ‌گونه مدركی در دست ندارند.

But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:

امّا در حضور شما اعتراف می‌کنم كه در پرستش خدای پدرانمان، طریقه‌ای را كه آنان بدعت می‌خوانند پیروی می‌نمایم. من به هرچه در تورات و نوشته‌های انبیا آمده است، اعتقاد دارم.

And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

من همان امیدی را به خدا دارم كه خود اینها دارند و آن این است كه هم برای نیكان و هم برای بدان قیامتی در پیش است.

And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

بنابراین با چنین امیدی، نهایت كوشش خود را می‌کنم كه در همهٔ احوال در برابر خدا و انسان وجدان آسوده‌ای داشته باشم.

Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.

«من پس از سالیان دراز به اورشلیم رفتم تا اعاناتی برای ملّت خود ببرم و قربانی بگذرانم.

Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult.

در معبد بزرگ پس از انجام مراسم تطهیر مشغول این كارها بودم، نه جمعیّتی به دور من جمع شده بود و نه اغتشاشی در كار بود

Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me.

كه چند تن از یهودیان استان آسیا مرا در آنجا دیدند و به نظر من ایشان هم باید در اینجا پیش شما حاضر شوند تا اگر از من شكایتی دارند، خودشان آن را اظهار نمایند،

Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,

یا اینها بگویند كه وقتی در حضور شورا ایستاده بودم چه خطایی از من سر زده

Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.

جز اینكه در میان آنان با صدای بلند گفتم: 'من به‌خاطر ایمان و امید به رستاخیز مردگان در اینجا محاكمه می‌شوم.'»

And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.

فیلیكِس كه خودش از این طریقه اطّلاع كاملی داشت، محاكمه را به تعویق انداخت و گفت: «من فتوای خود را موكول به آمدن سرهنگ لیسیاس می‌کنم.»

And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him.

و به یک سروان دستور داد، كه پولس را تحت نظر بگیرد و تا اندازه‌ای او را آزاد بگذارد و مانع آمد و رفت دوستان او كه برای رفع احتیاجاتش می‌آمدند نشود.

And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.

چند روز بعد فیلیكس با دروسله، همسر خود كه زنی یهودی بود، به آنجا آمد و دنبال پولس فرستاد و به سخنان پولس دربارهٔ ایمان به مسیح عیسی گوش داد.

And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

امّا وقتی دنبالهٔ سخن به نیكویی، پرهیزكاری و داوری آینده كشیده شد، فیلیكِس هراسان شد و اظهار داشت: «عجالتاً كافی است، هرگاه فرصت مناسبی دست دهد، باز هم دنبال تو می‌فرستم.»

He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.

در عین حال از پولس توقّع پول داشت و به همین دلیل غالباً او را احضار می‌کرد و با او گفت‌وگو می‌‌نمود.

But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.

پس از دو سال پركیوس فستوس جانشین فیلیكِس گردید. فیلیكِس چون می‌‌خواست رضایت یهودیان را جلب نماید، پولس را همچنان در زندان نگه داشت.
