Esther 4

Da Mordekai fikk vite alt som hadde hendt, sønderrev han sine klær og klædde sig i sekk og aske og gikk ut i byen under høie klagerop.

When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;

Og han kom like til plassen foran kongens port; for ingen som var klædd i sekk, hadde lov til å gå inn i kongens port.

And came even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.

Og i hvert eneste landskap, overalt hvor kongens ord og befaling nådde frem, blev det stor sorg blandt jødene og faste og gråt og jammer, ja, mange redet sig et leie av sekk og aske.

And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

Da kom Esters unge piker og hennes hoffmenn og fortalte henne det, og dronningen blev full av angst. Hun sendte klær til Mordekai, som han skulde ta på istedenfor de sekkeklær han gikk i; men han tok ikke imot dem.

So Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.

Ester kalte da til sig Hatak, en av kongens hoffmenn, som han hadde satt til å tjene henne. og bød ham gå til Mordekai for å få vite hvad som var på ferde, og hvorfor han bar sig således at.

Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.

Hatak gikk ut til Mordekai på byens torv foran kongens port.

So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king's gate.

Og Mordekai fortalte ham alt det som hadde hendt ham, og opgav for ham nøiaktig hvor meget sølv Haman hadde lovt å tilveie kongens skattkammer for å få utryddet jødene.

And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

Han gav ham også en avskrift av den skrevne befaling som var blitt gitt i Susan om å ødelegge dem, forat han skulde vise Ester den og melde henne alt og pålegge henne å gå inn til kongen og be og bønnfalle ham om nåde for sitt folk.

Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.

Hatak kom og fortalte Ester hvad Mordekai hadde sagt.

And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

Da bød Ester Hatak å gå til Mordekai og si:

Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;

Alle kongens tjenere og folket i kongens landskaper vet at hvis nogen, mann eller kvinne, går inn til kongen i den indre gård uten å være kalt, gjelder for enhver sådan samme lov: at han skal late livet, uten så er at kongen rekker ut sin gullstav mot ham, da får han leve; men jeg er nu i tretti dager ikke blitt kalt til å gå inn til kongen.

All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

Da Mordekai fikk høre hvad Ester hadde sagt,

And they told to Mordecai Esther's words.

sa han at de skulde gi Ester dette svar: Du må ikke tenke at du alene av alle jøder skal slippe unda, fordi du er i kongens hus.

Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.

For om du tier stille i denne tid, så vil det nok komme utfrielse og redning for jødene fra et annet sted, men du og din fars hus skal omkomme. Og hvem vet om du ikke nettop for en tid som denne er kommet til dronningverdigheten?

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

Da sa Ester at det skulde gis Mordekai dette svar:

Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,

Gå avsted og få samlet alle jøder som finnes i Susan, og hold faste for min skyld, så I hverken eter eller drikker noget i tre døgn, natt eller dag! Jeg og mine unge piker vil også faste på samme måte. Og så vil jeg gå inn til kongen, enda det ikke er efter loven. Skal jeg da omkomme, så får jeg omkomme.

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

Mordekai gikk bort og gjorde alt det som Ester hadde pålagt ham.

So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
