I Samuel 8

And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

وقتی سموئیل به سن پیری رسید، پسران خود را به عنوان داور بر اسرائیل تعیین نمود.

Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer–sheba.

نام پسر اول او یوئیل و دومی ابیا بود که در بئرشبع داوری می‌نموند.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

امّا پسرانش به راه او نرفتند. آنها برای سود شخصی خود کار کرده، رشوه می‌گرفتند و عدالت را پایمال می‌نمودند.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

پس تمام بزرگان قوم یک‌‌جا شده پیش سموئیل به رامه رفتند

And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

و به او گفتند: «خودت پیر و سالخورده شده‌ای و پسرانت هم به راه تو نمی‌روند، بنابراین ما می‌خواهیم که مانند اقوام دیگر پادشاهی داشته باشیم تا بر ما حکومت کند.»

But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

سموئیل از اینکه آنها گفتند «ما پادشاه می‌خواهیم،» بسیار دلگیر شد، پس به حضور خداوند دعا کرده از او راهنمایی خواست.

And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

خداوند به سموئیل فرمود: «برو، به هرچه می‌گویند گوش بده. آنها می‌خواهند مرا ترک کنند نه تو را، و میل ندارند که بعد از این من پادشاه آنها باشم.

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

از همان روزی که آنها را از کشور مصر خارج کردم، همیشه سرکشی کرده‌اند و پیرو خدایان دیگر بوده‌اند. حالا با تو هم همان رفتار را می‌کنند.

Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

پس برو و به هرچه می‌گویند گوش بده، امّا به آنها اخطار کن و آنها را از رفتار و کردار پادشاهی که بر آنها حکومت خواهد کرد، باخبر ساز.»

And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

سموئیل آنچه را که خداوند فرموده بود، به کسانی‌که از او پادشاه می‌خواستند، بیان کرد و گفت:

And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

«بدانید که پادشاه، پسران شما را به خدمت خواهد گرفت، بعضی را برای ارّابه‌ها و بعضی را برای اسبها و بعضی را نیز برای اینکه پیشاپیش ارّابه‌های او بدوند.

And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

فرماندهان نظامی را به رتبه‌های مختلف مقرّر می‌کند تا سپاه او را در جنگ رهبری نمایند. بعضی را مأمور می‌سازد که زمینهای او را شخم بزنند و محصولات او را درو کنند و تجهیزات نظامی و ارّابه‌های او را بسازند.

And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

دختران شما را برای عطرسازی، آشپزی و نان‌پزی می‌برد.

And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

بهترین زمینهای زراعتی، باغهای انگور و زیتون شما را گرفته، به خدمتکاران خود می‌بخشد.

And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

ده‌یک غلّه و انگورتان را گرفته به مأموران و خادمان خود می‌دهد.

And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

غلامان، کنیزان، بهترین حیوانات گلّه و الاغهای شما را برای کارهای شخصی خود به کار خواهد گرفت.

He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

ده‌ یک گلّهٔ شما را گرفته، خود شما را نیز غلام خود می‌‌سازد.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

در آن روز از دست پادشاهی که برای خود انتخاب کرده‌‌‌اید، فریاد خواهید کرد، امّا خداوند به دادتان نخواهد رسید.»

Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

با وجود همهٔ این دلایل باز هم مردم اصرار کردند و گفتند: «ما پادشاه می‌خواهیم،

That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

چون آرزو داریم که مانند اقوام دیگر باشیم. او بر ما سلطنت کند و در جنگ رهبر ما باشد.»

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.

وقتی سموئیل سخنان آنها را شنید، همه را به حضور خداوند عرض کرد.

And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

خداوند به سموئیل فرمود: «هرچه مردم می‌خواهند بکن. برو و پادشاهی برای آنها تعیین نما.» پس سموئیل مردم را به خانه‌های خود فرستاد.
