Jeremiah 2

Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

رب کا کلام مجھ پر نازل ہوا،

Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

”جا، زور سے یروشلم کے کان میں پکار کہ رب فرماتا ہے، ’مجھے تیری جوانی کی وفاداری خوب یاد ہے۔ جب تیری شادی قریب آئی تو تُو مجھے کتنا پیار کرتی تھی، یہاں تک کہ تُو ریگستان میں بھی جہاں کھیتی باڑی ناممکن تھی میرے پیچھے پیچھے چلتی رہی۔

Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.

اُس وقت اسرائیل رب کے لئے مخصوص و مُقدّس تھا، وہ اُس کی فصل کا پہلا پھل تھا۔ جس نے بھی اُس میں سے کچھ کھایا وہ مجرم ٹھہرا، اور اُس پر آفت نازل ہوئی۔‘ یہ رب کا فرمان ہے۔“

Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

اے یعقوب کی اولاد، رب کا کلام سنو! اے اسرائیل کے تمام گھرانو، دھیان دو!

Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

رب فرماتا ہے، ”تمہارے باپ دادا نے مجھ میں کون سی ناانصافی پائی کہ مجھ سے اِتنے دُور ہو گئے؟ ہیچ بُتوں کے پیچھے ہو کر وہ خود ہیچ ہو گئے۔

Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?

اُنہوں نے پوچھا تک نہیں کہ رب کہاں ہے جو ہمیں مصر سے نکال لایا اور ریگستان میں صحیح راہ دکھائی، گو وہ علاقہ ویران و سنسان تھا۔ ہر طرف گھاٹیوں، پانی کی سخت کمی اور تاریکی کا سامنا کرنا پڑا۔ نہ کوئی اُس میں سے گزرتا، نہ کوئی وہاں رہتا ہے۔

And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.

مَیں تو تمہیں باغوں سے بھرے ملک میں لایا تاکہ تم اُس کے پھل اور اچھی پیداوار سے لطف اندوز ہو سکو۔ لیکن تم نے کیا کِیا؟ میرے ملک میں داخل ہوتے ہی تم نے اُسے ناپاک کر دیا، اور مَیں اپنی موروثی ملکیت سے گھن کھانے لگا۔

The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

نہ اماموں نے پوچھا کہ رب کہاں ہے، نہ شریعت کو عمل میں لانے والے مجھے جانتے تھے۔ قوم کے گلہ بان مجھ سے بےوفا ہوئے، اور نبی بےفائدہ بُتوں کے پیچھے لگ کر بعل دیوتا کے پیغامات سنانے لگے۔“

Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children's children will I plead.

رب فرماتا ہے، ”اِسی وجہ سے مَیں آئندہ بھی عدالت میں تمہارے ساتھ لڑوں گا۔ ہاں، نہ صرف تمہارے ساتھ بلکہ تمہاری آنے والی نسلوں کے ساتھ بھی۔

For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.

جاؤ، سمندر کو پار کر کے جزیرۂ قبرص کی تفتیش کرو! اپنے قاصدوں کو ملکِ قیدار میں بھیج کر غور سے دریافت کرو کہ کیا وہاں کبھی یہاں کا سا کام ہوا ہے؟

Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

کیا کسی قوم نے کبھی اپنے دیوتاؤں کو تبدیل کیا، گو وہ حقیقت میں خدا نہیں ہیں؟ ہرگز نہیں! لیکن میری قوم اپنی شان و شوکت کے خدا کو چھوڑ کر بےفائدہ بُتوں کی پوجا کرنے لگی ہے۔“

Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.

رب فرماتا ہے، ”اے آسمان، یہ دیکھ کر ہیبت زدہ ہو جا، تیرے رونگٹے کھڑے ہو جائیں، ہکا بکا رہ جا!

For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

کیونکہ میری قوم سے دو سنگین جرم سرزد ہوئے ہیں۔ ایک، اُنہوں نے مجھے ترک کیا، گو مَیں زندگی کے پانی کا سرچشمہ ہوں۔ دوسرے، اُنہوں نے اپنے ذاتی حوض بنائے ہیں جو دراڑوں کی وجہ سے بھر ہی نہیں سکتے۔

Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?

کیا اسرائیل ابتدا سے ہی غلام ہے؟ کیا اُس کے والدین غلام تھے کہ وہ اب تک غلام ہے؟ ہرگز نہیں! تو پھر وہ کیوں دوسروں کا لُوٹا ہوا مال بن گیا ہے؟

The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.

جوان شیرببر دہاڑتے ہوئے اُس پر ٹوٹ پڑے ہیں، گرجتے گرجتے اُنہوں نے ملکِ اسرائیل کو برباد کر دیا ہے۔ اُس کے شہر نذرِ آتش ہو کر ویران و سنسان ہو گئے ہیں۔

Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.

ساتھ ساتھ میمفِس اور تحفن حیس کے لوگ بھی تیرے سر کو منڈوا رہے ہیں۔

Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?

اے اسرائیلی قوم، کیا یہ تیرے غلط کام کا نتیجہ نہیں؟ کیونکہ تُو نے رب اپنے خدا کو اُس وقت ترک کیا جب وہ تیری راہنمائی کر رہا تھا۔

And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?

اب مجھے بتا کہ مصر کو جا کر دریائے نیل کا پانی پینے کا کیا فائدہ؟ ملکِ اسور میں جا کر دریائے فرات کا پانی پینے سے کیا حاصل؟

Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

تیرا غلط کام تجھے سزا دے رہا ہے، تیری بےوفا حرکتیں ہی تیری سرزنش کر رہی ہیں۔ چنانچہ جان لے اور دھیان دے کہ رب اپنے خدا کو چھوڑ کر اُس کا خوف نہ ماننے کا پھل کتنا بُرا اور کڑوا ہے۔“ یہ قادرِ مطلق رب الافواج کا فرمان ہے۔

For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.

”کیونکہ شروع سے ہی تُو اپنے جوئے اور رسّوں کو توڑ کر کہتی رہی، ’مَیں تیری خدمت نہیں کروں گی!‘ تُو ہر بلندی پر اور ہر گھنے درخت کے سائے میں لیٹ کر عصمت فروشی کرتی رہی۔

Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?

پہلے تُو انگور کی مخصوص اور قابلِ اعتماد نسل کی پنیری تھی جسے مَیں نے خود زمین میں لگایا۔ تو یہ کیا ہوا کہ تُو بگڑ کر جنگلی بیل بن گئی؟

For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.

اب تیرے قصور کا داغ اُتر نہیں سکتا، خواہ تُو کتنا کھاری سوڈا اور صابن کیوں نہ استعمال کرے۔“ یہ رب قادرِ مطلق کا فرمان ہے۔

How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;

”تُو کس طرح یہ کہنے کی جرٲت کر سکتی ہے کہ مَیں نے اپنے آپ کو آلودہ نہیں کیا، مَیں بعل دیوتاؤں کے پیچھے نہیں گئی۔ وادی میں اپنی حرکتوں پر تو غور کر! جان لے کہ تجھ سے کیا کچھ سرزد ہوا ہے۔ تُو بےمقصد اِدھر اُدھر بھاگنے والی اونٹنی ہے۔

A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

بلکہ تُو ریگستان میں رہنے کی عادی گدھی ہی ہے جو شہوت کے مارے ہانپتی ہے۔ مستی کے اِس عالم میں کون اُس پر قابو پا سکتا ہے؟ جو بھی اُس سے ملنا چاہے اُسے زیادہ جد و جہد کی ضرورت نہیں، کیونکہ مستی کے موسم میں وہ ہر ایک کے لئے حاضر ہے۔

Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

اے اسرائیل، اِتنا نہ دوڑ کہ تیرے جوتے گھس کر پھٹ جائیں اور تیرا گلا خشک ہو جائے۔ لیکن افسوس، تُو بضد ہے، ’نہیں، مجھے چھوڑ دے! مَیں اجنبی معبودوں کو پیار کرتی ہوں، اور لازم ہے کہ مَیں اُن کے پیچھے بھاگتی جاؤں۔‘

As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,

سنو! اسرائیلی قوم کے تمام افراد اُن کے بادشاہوں، افسروں، اماموں اور نبیوں سمیت شرمندہ ہو جائیں گے۔ وہ پکڑے ہوئے چور کی سی شرم محسوس کریں گے۔

Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.

یہ لوگ لکڑی کے بُت سے کہتے ہیں، ’تُو میرا باپ ہے‘ اور پتھر کے دیوتا سے، ’تُو نے مجھے جنم دیا۔‘ لیکن گو یہ میری طرف رجوع نہیں کرتے بلکہ اپنا منہ مجھ سے پھیر کر چلتے ہیں توبھی جوں ہی کوئی آفت اُن پر آ جائے تو یہ مجھ سے التجا کرنے لگتے ہیں کہ آ کر ہمیں بچا!

But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

اب یہ بُت کہاں ہیں جو تُو نے اپنے لئے بنائے؟ وہی کھڑے ہو کر دکھائیں کہ تجھے مصیبت سے بچا سکتے ہیں۔ اے یہوداہ، آخر جتنے تیرے شہر ہیں اُتنے تیرے دیوتا بھی ہیں۔“

Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD.

رب فرماتا ہے، ”تم مجھ پر کیوں الزام لگاتے ہو؟ تم تو سب مجھ سے بےوفا ہو گئے ہو۔

In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

مَیں نے تمہارے بچوں کو سزا دی، لیکن بےفائدہ۔ وہ میری تربیت قبول نہیں کرتے۔ بلکہ تم نے پھاڑنے والے شیرببر کی طرح اپنے نبیوں پر ٹوٹ کر اُنہیں تلوار سے قتل کیا۔

O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

اے موجودہ نسل، رب کے کلام پر دھیان دو! کیا مَیں اسرائیل کے لئے ریگستان یا تاریک ترین علاقے کی مانند تھا؟ میری قوم کیوں کہتی ہے، ’اب ہم آزادی سے اِدھر اُدھر پھر سکتے ہیں، آئندہ ہم تیرے حضور نہیں آئیں گے؟‘

Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

کیا کنواری کبھی اپنے زیورات کو بھول سکتی ہے، یا دُلھن اپنا عروسی لباس؟ ہرگز نہیں! لیکن میری قوم بےشمار دنوں سے مجھے بھول گئی ہے۔

Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.

تُو عشق ڈھونڈنے میں کتنی ماہر ہے! بدکار عورتیں بھی تجھ سے بہت کچھ سیکھ لیتی ہیں۔

Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.

تیرے لباس کا دامن بےگناہ غریبوں کے خون سے آلودہ ہے، گو تُو نے اُنہیں نقب زنی جیسا غلط کام کرتے وقت نہ پکڑا۔ اِس سب کچھ کے باوجود بھی

Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

تُو بضد ہے کہ مَیں بےقصور ہوں، اللہ کا مجھ پر غصہ ٹھنڈا ہو گیا ہے۔ لیکن مَیں تیری عدالت کروں گا، اِس لئے کہ تُو کہتی ہے، ’مجھ سے گناہ سرزد نہیں ہوا۔‘

Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

تُو کبھی اِدھر، کبھی اُدھر جا کر اِتنی آسانی سے اپنا رُخ کیوں بدلتی ہے؟ یقین کر کہ جس طرح تُو اپنے اتحادی اسور سے مایوس ہو کر شرمندہ ہوئی ہے اُسی طرح تُو نئے اتحادی مصر سے بھی نادم ہو جائے گی۔

Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

تُو اُس جگہ سے بھی اپنے ہاتھوں کو سر پر رکھ کر نکلے گی۔ کیونکہ رب نے اُنہیں رد کیا ہے جن پر تُو بھروسا رکھتی ہے۔ اُن سے تجھے مدد حاصل نہیں ہو گی۔“
