II Samuel 18

And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

داؤد نے اپنے فوجیوں کا معائنہ کر کے ہزار ہزار اور سَو سَو افراد پر آدمی مقرر کئے۔

And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

پھر اُس نے اُنہیں تین حصوں میں تقسیم کر کے ایک حصے پر یوآب کو، دوسرے پر اُس کے بھائی ابی شے بن ضرویاہ کو اور تیسرے پر اِتّی جاتی کو مقرر کیا۔ اُس نے فوجیوں کو بتایا، ”مَیں خود بھی آپ کے ساتھ لڑنے کے لئے نکلوں گا۔“

But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.

لیکن اُنہوں نے اعتراض کیا، ”ایسا نہ کریں! اگر ہمیں بھاگنا بھی پڑے یا ہمارا آدھا حصہ مارا بھی جائے تو ابی سلوم کے فوجیوں کے لئے اِتنا کوئی فرق نہیں پڑے گا۔ وہ آپ ہی کو پکڑنا چاہتے ہیں، کیونکہ آپ اُن کے نذدیک ہم میں سے 10,000 افراد سے زیادہ اہم ہیں۔ چنانچہ بہتر ہے کہ آپ شہر ہی میں رہیں اور وہاں سے ہماری حمایت کریں۔“

And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.

بادشاہ نے جواب دیا، ”ٹھیک ہے، جو کچھ آپ کو معقول لگتا ہے وہی کروں گا۔“ وہ شہر کے دروازے پر کھڑا ہوا، اور تمام مرد سَو سَو اور ہزار ہزار کے گروہوں میں اُس کے سامنے سے گزر کر باہر نکلے۔

And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.

یوآب، ابی شے اور اِتّی کو اُس نے حکم دیا، ”میری خاطر جوان ابی سلوم سے نرمی سے پیش آنا!“ تمام فوجیوں نے تینوں کمانڈروں سے یہ بات سنی۔

So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;

داؤد کے لوگ کھلے میدان میں اسرائیلیوں سے لڑنے گئے۔ افرائیم کے جنگل میں اُن کی ٹکر ہوئی،

Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.

اور داؤد کے فوجیوں نے مخالفوں کو شکستِ فاش دی۔ اُن کے 20,000 افراد ہلاک ہوئے۔

For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

لڑائی پورے جنگل میں پھیلتی گئی۔ یہ جنگل اِتنا خطرناک تھا کہ اُس دن تلوار کی نسبت زیادہ لوگ اُس کی زد میں آ کر ہلاک ہو گئے۔

And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.

اچانک داؤد کے کچھ فوجیوں کو ابی سلوم نظر آیا۔ وہ خچر پر سوار بلوط کے ایک بڑے درخت کے سائے میں سے گزرنے لگا تو اُس کے بال درخت کی شاخوں میں اُلجھ گئے۔ اُس کا خچر آگے نکل گیا جبکہ ابی سلوم وہیں آسمان و زمین کے درمیان لٹکا رہا۔

And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.

جن آدمیوں نے یہ دیکھا اُن میں سے ایک یوآب کے پاس گیا اور اطلاع دی، ”مَیں نے ابی سلوم کو دیکھا ہے۔ وہ بلوط کے ایک درخت میں لٹکا ہوا ہے۔“

And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle.

یوآب پکارا، ”کیا آپ نے اُسے دیکھا؟ تو اُسے وہیں کیوں نہ مار دیا؟ پھر مَیں آپ کو انعام کے طور پر چاندی کے دس سِکے اور ایک کمربند دے دیتا۔“

And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.

لیکن آدمی نے اعتراض کیا، ”اگر آپ مجھے چاندی کے ہزار سِکے بھی دیتے توبھی مَیں بادشاہ کے بیٹے کو ہاتھ نہ لگاتا۔ ہمارے سنتے سنتے بادشاہ نے آپ، ابی شے اور اِتّی کو حکم دیا، ’میری خاطر ابی سلوم کو نقصان نہ پہنچائیں۔‘

Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me.

اور اگر مَیں چپکے سے بھی اُسے قتل کرتا توبھی اِس کی خبر کسی نہ کسی وقت بادشاہ کے کانوں تک پہنچتی۔ کیونکہ کوئی بھی بات بادشاہ سے پوشیدہ نہیں رہتی۔ اگر مجھے اِس صورت میں پکڑا جاتا تو آپ میری حمایت نہ کرتے۔“

Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

یوآب بولا، ”میرا وقت مزید ضائع مت کرو۔“ اُس نے تین نیزے لے کر ابی سلوم کے دل میں گھونپ دیئے جب وہ ابھی زندہ حالت میں درخت سے لٹکا ہوا تھا۔

And ten young men that bare Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.

پھر یوآب کے دس سلاح برداروں نے ابی سلوم کو گھیر کر اُسے ہلاک کر دیا۔

And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.

تب یوآب نے نرسنگا بجا دیا، اور اُس کے فوجی دوسروں کا تعاقب کرنے سے باز آ کر واپس آ گئے۔

And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.

باقی اسرائیلی اپنے اپنے گھر بھاگ گئے۔ یوآب کے آدمیوں نے ابی سلوم کی لاش کو ایک گہرے گڑھے میں پھینک کر اُس پر پتھروں کا بڑا ڈھیر لگا دیا۔

Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.

کچھ دیر پہلے ابی سلوم اِس خیال سے بادشاہ کی وادی میں اپنی یاد میں ایک ستون کھڑا کر چکا تھا کہ میرا کوئی بیٹا نہیں ہے جو میرا نام قائم رکھے۔ آج تک یہ ’ابی سلوم کی یادگار‘ کہلاتا ہے۔

Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.

اخی معض بن صدوق نے یوآب سے درخواست کی، ”مجھے دوڑ کر بادشاہ کو خوش خبری سنانے دیں کہ رب نے اُسے دشمنوں سے بچا لیا ہے۔“

And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead.

لیکن یوآب نے انکار کیا، ”جو پیغام آپ کو بادشاہ تک پہنچانا ہے وہ اُس کے لئے خوش خبری نہیں ہے، کیونکہ اُس کا بیٹا مر گیا ہے۔ کسی اَور وقت مَیں ضرور آپ کو اُس کے پاس بھیج دوں گا، لیکن آج نہیں۔“

Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.

اُس نے ایتھوپیا کے ایک آدمی کو حکم دیا، ”جائیں اور بادشاہ کو بتائیں۔“ آدمی یوآب کے سامنے اوندھے منہ جھک گیا اور پھر دوڑ کر چلا گیا۔

Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?

لیکن اخی معض خوش نہیں تھا۔ وہ اصرار کرتا رہا، ”کچھ بھی ہو جائے، مہربانی کر کے مجھے اُس کے پیچھے دوڑنے دیں!“ ایک اَور بار یوآب نے اُسے روکنے کی کوشش کی، ”بیٹے، آپ جانے کے لئے کیوں تڑپتے ہیں؟ جو خبر پہنچانی ہے اُس کے لئے آپ کو انعام نہیں ملے گا۔“

But howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi.

اخی معض نے جواب دیا، ”کوئی بات نہیں۔ کچھ بھی ہو جائے، مَیں ہر صورت میں دوڑ کر بادشاہ کے پاس جانا چاہتا ہوں۔“ تب یوآب نے اُسے جانے دیا۔ اخی معض نے دریائے یردن کے کھلے میدان کا راستہ لیا، اِس لئے وہ ایتھوپیا کے آدمی سے پہلے بادشاہ کے پاس پہنچ گیا۔

And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.

اُس وقت داؤد شہر کے باہر اور اندر والے دروازوں کے درمیان بیٹھا انتظار کر رہا تھا۔ جب پہرے دار دروازے کے اوپر کی فصیل پر چڑھا تو اُسے ایک تنہا آدمی نظر آیا جو دوڑتا ہوا اُن کی طرف آ رہا تھا۔

And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.

پہرے دار نے آواز دے کر بادشاہ کو اطلاع دی۔ داؤد بولا، ”اگر اکیلا ہو تو ضرور خوش خبری لے کر آ رہا ہو گا۔“ یہ آدمی بھاگتا بھاگتا قریب آ گیا،

And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.

لیکن اِتنے میں پہرے دار کو ایک اَور آدمی نظر آیا جو شہر کی طرف دوڑتا ہوا آ رہا تھا۔ اُس نے شہر کے دروازے کے دربان کو آواز دی، ”ایک اَور آدمی دوڑتا ہوا دکھائی دے رہا ہے۔ وہ بھی اکیلا ہی آ رہا ہے۔“ داؤد نے کہا، ”وہ بھی اچھی خبر لے کر آ رہا ہے۔“

And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.

پھر پہرے دار پکارا، ”لگتا ہے کہ پہلا آدمی اخی معض بن صدوق ہے، کیونکہ وہی یوں چلتا ہے۔“ داؤد کو تسلی ہوئی، ”اخی معض اچھا بندہ ہے۔ وہ ضرور اچھی خبر لے کر آ رہا ہو گا۔“

And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.

دُور سے اخی معض نے بادشاہ کو آواز دی، ”بادشاہ کی سلامتی ہو!“ وہ اوندھے منہ بادشاہ کے سامنے جھک کر بولا، ”رب آپ کے خدا کی تمجید ہو! اُس نے آپ کو اُن لوگوں سے بچا لیا ہے جو میرے آقا اور بادشاہ کے خلاف اُٹھ کھڑے ہوئے تھے۔“

And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.

داؤد نے پوچھا، ”اور میرا بیٹا ابی سلوم؟ کیا وہ محفوظ ہے؟“ اخی معض نے جواب دیا، ”جب یوآب نے مجھے اور بادشاہ کے دوسرے خادم کو آپ کے پاس رُخصت کیا تو اُس وقت بڑی افرا تفری تھی۔ مجھے تفصیل سے معلوم نہ ہوا کہ کیا ہو رہا ہے۔“

And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.

بادشاہ نے حکم دیا، ”ایک طرف ہو کر میرے پاس کھڑے ہو جائیں!“ اخی معض نے ایسا ہی کیا۔

And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.

پھر ایتھوپیا کا آدمی پہنچ گیا۔ اُس نے کہا، ”میرے بادشاہ، میری خوش خبری سنیں! آج رب نے آپ کو اُن سب لوگوں سے نجات دلائی ہے جو آپ کے خلاف اُٹھ کھڑے ہوئے تھے۔“

And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.

بادشاہ نے سوال کیا، ”اور میرا بیٹا ابی سلوم؟ کیا وہ محفوظ ہے؟“ ایتھوپیا کے آدمی نے جواب دیا، ”میرے آقا، جس طرح اُس کے ساتھ ہوا ہے، اُس طرح آپ کے تمام دشمنوں کے ساتھ ہو جائے، اُن سب کے ساتھ جو آپ کو نقصان پہنچانا چاہتے ہیں!“

And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

یہ سن کر بادشاہ لرز اُٹھا۔ شہر کے دروازے کے اوپر کی فصیل پر ایک کمرا تھا۔ اب بادشاہ روتے روتے سیڑھیوں پر چڑھنے لگا اور چیختے چلّاتے اُس کمرے میں چلا گیا، ”ہائے میرے بیٹے ابی سلوم! میرے بیٹے، میرے بیٹے ابی سلوم! کاش مَیں ہی تیری جگہ مر جاتا۔ ہائے ابی سلوم، میرے بیٹے، میرے بیٹے!“
