I Samuel 3

And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

Gutten Samuel tjente Herren under Elis tilsyn, og Herrens ord var dyrt i de dager; av syner var der lite.

And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;

Så var det en dag mens Eli lå i sitt rum - hans øine hadde begynt å bli sløve, så han ikke kunde se,

And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;

og Guds lampe var ennu ikke sluknet, og Samuel lå i Herrens helligdom, hvor Guds ark var -

That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.

da ropte Herren på Samuel, og han sa: Ja, her er jeg.

And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.

Og han løp til Eli og sa: Her er jeg; du ropte jo på mig. Men han sa: Jeg ropte ikke; gå tilbake og legg dig! Og han gikk og la sig.

And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.

Men Herren ropte ennu en gang: Samuel! Og Samuel stod op og gikk til Eli og sa: Her er jeg du ropte jo på mig. Men han sa: Jeg ropte ikke, min sønn; gå tilbake og legg dig!

Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.

Samuel kjente ennu ikke Herren; for Herrens ord var ennu ikke åpenbaret for ham.

And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.

Da ropte Herren tredje gang: Samuel! Og han stod op og gikk til Eli og sa: Her er jeg; du ropte jo på mig. Da skjønte Eli at det var Herren som ropte på gutten.

Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Og Eli sa til Samuel: Gå og legg dig, og blir det ropt på dig, så skal du si: Tal, Herre, din tjener hører! Og Samuel gikk og la sig på sin plass.

And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

Da kom Herren og stod der og ropte nu som før: Samuel, Samuel! Og Samuel sa: Tal, din tjener hører!

And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.

Da sa Herren til Samuel: Nu vil jeg gjøre noget i Israel så det skal ringe for begge ørene på hver den som hører om det.

In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.

På den dag vil jeg la komme over Eli alt det jeg har talt om hans hus, fra først til sist.

For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

For jeg har kunngjort ham at jeg vil dømme hans hus for alltid for den misgjernings skyld at han visste at hans sønner førte forbannelse over sig, men allikevel ikke holdt dem i age.

And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

Og derfor har jeg svoret Elis ætt: Aldri i evighet skal Elis ætts misgjerninger kunne sones med slaktoffer eller med matoffer.

And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.

Samuel blev liggende til om morgenen; da åpnet han døren til Herrens hus, men han vågde ikke å fortelle synet til Eli.

Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.

Da ropte Eli til Samuel og sa: Samuel, min sønn! Og han svarte: Ja, her er jeg.

And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.

Han sa: Hvad var det han sa til dig? Kjære, dølg det ikke for mig! Gud la det gå dig ille både nu og siden om du dølger for mig noget av det han sa til dig!

And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.

Så fortalte Samuel ham alt sammen og dulgte ikke noget for ham. Da sa han: Han er Herren; han gjøre hvad der er godt i hans øine!

And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.

Og Samuel vokste til, og Herren var med ham, og han lot ikke noget av alle sine ord falle til jorden.

And all Israel from Dan even to Beer–sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

Da skjønte hele Israel fra Dan til Be'erseba at Samuel var betrodd å være profet for Herren.

And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

Og Herren blev ved å la sig se i Silo; for Herren åpenbarte sig for Samuel i Silo ved Herrens ord.
