Ecclesiastes 5

وقتی به معبد بزرگ می‌روی مواظب رفتار خود باش، زیرا گوش دادن و یاد گرفتن بهتر از آن قربانی‌ای است که اشخاص نادان می‌گذرانند، ولی خوب را از بد تشخیص نمی‌دهند.

Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

پیش از آنکه حرفی بزنی خوب فکر کن، در سخنی که می‌گویی عجله منما و در حضور خدا حرف نسنجیده مگو، زیرا او در عالم بالا است و تو بر روی زمین هستی. پس سخنانت خلاصه و کوتاه باشد.

Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.

زحمت و مشقّت زیاد در کار، خواب را پریشان می‌سازد و پُرگویی نشانهٔ نادانی است.

For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words.

هرگاه برای خدا نذری داری، در ادای آن تأخیر منما، زیرا او از مردم نادان بیزار است. به قول خود وفادار باش.

When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.

بهتر است اصلاً نذر نکنی تا اینکه نذر نموده، ادا ننمایی.

Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

مگذار که سخنان دهانت، تو را به گناه وادار کند و به خادم خدا بگویی که نذر تو اشتباهی بوده است. چرا خدا بر تو خشمگین شود و تمام حاصل کار تو را از بین ببرد؟

Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

خیالات زیاد و سخنان بی‌معنی بیهوده است. انسان باید از خدا بترسد.

For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.

اگر می‌بینی که بر مردم مسکین ظلم می‌شود و عدالت و انصاف اجرا نمی‌شود، تعجّب نکن، زیرا بر هر مأمور یک مأمور بالاتر نظارت می‌کند و یک مأمور دیگر و عالی‌تر همگی را تحت نظر خود دارد.

If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.

هرکسی از زمین بهره می‌گیرد، حتّی پادشاه هم در آن سهمی‌ دارد.

Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.

شخص پول دوست، هرگز از پول سیر نمی‌شود و کسی‌که طالب ثروت است هرگز به آنچه دلش می‌خواهد نمی‌رسد. این نیز بیهوده است.

He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.

هرقدر ثروت زیاد شود به همان اندازه خورندگان آن زیاد می‌شوند. چه چیزی عاید صاحب آن می‌شود جز اینکه آن را به چشمان خود ببیند؟

When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?

خواب کارگر شیرین است، چه کم خورده باشد، چه زیاد، امّا ثروت شخص دولتمند نمی‌گذارد که او شبها خواب راحت داشته باشد.

The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.

مشکل بزرگ دیگری که در این دنیا دیدم این است که شخصی پول ذخیره می‌کند تا در آینده از آن استفاده کند،

There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.

بعد همهٔ اندوختهٔ خود را در یک حادثه از دست می‌دهد و حتّی چیزی برای فرزندانش بجا نمی‌ماند.

But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.

برهنه از مادر به دنیا آمده‌اند و همان‌طور برهنه از دنیا می‌روند و از ثروت خود چیزی را با خود نمی‌برند.

As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.

واقعاً جای افسوس است که مردم رنج و زحمت بیهوده می‌کشند، دست خالی آمده‌اند و دست خالی هم می‌روند و نتیجهٔ زحمتشان در پی باد دویدن است.

And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?

تمام زندگی آنها در تاریکی و با درد و رنج و خشم سپری می‌شود.

All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.

به نظر من بهتر است که انسان بخورد و بنوشد و از دوران کوتاه زندگی خود که خدا به او داده و از آنچه که با کار و زحمت خود به دست آورده است لذّت ببرد، چون قسمتش همین است.

Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.

اگر خدا به کسی ثروت و دارایی می‌بخشد، او باید این بخشش خدا را با شکرگزاری بپذیرد و از آن لذّت ببرد.

Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

چنین شخصی به دوران کوتاه عمر خود فکر نمی‌کند، چون خدا دل او را از شادی لبریز کرده است.

For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.
