Judges 11

اُس وقت جِلعاد میں ایک زبردست سورما بنام اِفتاح تھا۔ باپ کا نام جِلعاد تھا جبکہ ماں کسبی تھی۔

Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

لیکن باپ کی بیوی کے بیٹے بھی تھے۔ جب بالغ ہوئے تو اُنہوں نے اِفتاح سے کہا، ”ہم میراث تیرے ساتھ نہیں بانٹیں گے، کیونکہ تُو ہمارا سگا بھائی نہیں ہے۔“ اُنہوں نے اُسے بھگا دیا،

And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and his wife's sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.

اور وہ وہاں سے ہجرت کر کے ملکِ طوب میں جا بسا۔ وہاں کچھ آوارہ لوگ اُس کے پیچھے ہو لئے جو اُس کے ساتھ اِدھر اُدھر گھومتے پھرتے رہے۔

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.

جب کچھ دیر کے بعد عمونی فوج اسرائیل سے لڑنے آئی

And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

تو جِلعاد کے بزرگ اِفتاح کو واپس لانے کے لئے ملکِ طوب میں آئے۔

And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:

اُنہوں نے گزارش کی، ”آئیں، عمونیوں سے لڑنے میں ہماری راہنمائی کریں۔“

And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

لیکن اِفتاح نے اعتراض کیا، ”آپ اِس وقت میرے پاس کیوں آئے ہیں جب مصیبت میں ہیں؟ آپ ہی نے مجھ سے نفرت کر کے مجھے باپ کے گھر سے نکال دیا تھا۔“

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

بزرگوں نے جواب دیا، ”ہم اِس لئے آپ کے پاس واپس آئے ہیں کہ آپ عمونیوں کے ساتھ جنگ میں ہماری مدد کریں۔ اگر آپ ایسا کریں تو ہم آپ کو پورے جِلعاد کا حکمران بنا لیں گے۔

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

اِفتاح نے پوچھا، ”اگر مَیں آپ کے ساتھ عمونیوں کے خلاف لڑوں اور رب مجھے اُن پر فتح دے تو کیا آپ واقعی مجھے اپنا حکمران بنا لیں گے؟“

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”رب ہمارا گواہ ہے! وہی ہمیں سزا دے اگر ہم اپنا وعدہ پورا نہ کریں۔“

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.

یہ سن کر اِفتاح جِلعاد کے بزرگوں کے ساتھ مِصفاہ گیا۔ وہاں لوگوں نے اُسے اپنا سردار اور فوج کا کمانڈر بنا لیا۔ مِصفاہ میں اُس نے رب کے حضور وہ تمام باتیں دہرائیں جن کا فیصلہ اُس نے بزرگوں کے ساتھ کیا تھا۔

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

پھر اِفتاح نے عمونی بادشاہ کے پاس اپنے قاصدوں کو بھیج کر پوچھا، ”ہمارا آپ سے کیا واسطہ کہ آپ ہم سے لڑنے آئے ہیں؟“

And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?

بادشاہ نے جواب دیا، ”جب اسرائیلی مصر سے نکلے تو اُنہوں نے ارنون، یبوق اور یردن کے دریاؤں کے درمیان کا علاقہ مجھ سے چھین لیا۔ اب اُسے جھگڑا کئے بغیر مجھے واپس کر دو۔“

And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

پھر اِفتاح نے اپنے قاصدوں کو دوبارہ عمونی بادشاہ کے پاس بھیج کر

And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:

کہا، ”اسرائیل نے نہ تو موآبیوں سے اور نہ عمونیوں سے زمین چھینی۔

And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:

حقیقت یہ ہے کہ جب ہماری قوم مصر سے نکلی تو وہ ریگستان میں سے گزر کر بحرِ قُلزم اور وہاں سے ہو کر قادس پہنچ گئی۔

But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;

قادس سے اُنہوں نے ادوم کے بادشاہ کے پاس قاصد بھیج کر گزارش کی، ’ہمیں اپنے ملک میں سے گزرنے دیں۔‘ لیکن اُس نے انکار کیا۔ پھر اسرائیلیوں نے موآب کے بادشاہ سے درخواست کی، لیکن اُس نے بھی اپنے ملک میں سے گزرنے کی اجازت نہ دی۔ اِس پر ہماری قوم کچھ دیر کے لئے قادس میں رہی۔

Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

آخرکار وہ ریگستان میں واپس جا کر ادوم اور موآب کے جنوب میں چلتے چلتے موآب کے مشرقی کنارے پر پہنچی، وہاں جہاں دریائے ارنون اُس کی سرحد ہے۔ لیکن وہ موآب کے علاقے میں داخل نہ ہوئے بلکہ دریا کے مشرق میں خیمہ زن ہوئے۔

Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.

وہاں سے اسرائیلیوں نے حسبون کے رہنے والے اموری بادشاہ سیحون کو پیغام بھجوایا، ’ہمیں اپنے ملک میں سے گزرنے دیں تاکہ ہم اپنے ملک میں داخل ہو سکیں۔‘

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

لیکن سیحون کو شک ہوا۔ اُسے یقین نہیں تھا کہ وہ ملک میں سے گزر کر آگے بڑھیں گے۔ اُس نے نہ صرف انکار کیا بلکہ اپنے فوجیوں کو جمع کر کے یہض شہر میں خیمہ زن ہوا اور اسرائیلیوں کے ساتھ لڑنے لگا۔

But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

لیکن رب اسرائیل کے خدا نے سیحون اور اُس کے تمام فوجیوں کو اسرائیل کے حوالے کر دیا۔ اُنہوں نے اُنہیں شکست دے کر اموریوں کے پورے ملک پر قبضہ کر لیا۔

And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

یہ تمام علاقہ جنوب میں دریائے ارنون سے لے کر شمال میں دریائے یبوق تک اور مشرق کے ریگستان سے لے کر مغرب میں دریائے یردن تک ہمارے قبضے میں آ گیا۔

And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.

دیکھیں، رب اسرائیل کے خدا نے اپنی قوم کے آگے آگے اموریوں کو نکال دیا ہے۔ تو پھر آپ کا اِس ملک پر قبضہ کرنے کا کیا حق ہے؟

So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?

آپ بھی سمجھتے ہیں کہ جسے آپ کے دیوتا کموس نے آپ کے آگے سے نکال دیا ہے اُس کے ملک پر قبضہ کرنے کا آپ کا حق ہے۔ اِسی طرح جسے رب ہمارے خدا نے ہمارے آگے آگے نکال دیا ہے اُس کے ملک پر قبضہ کرنے کا حق ہمارا ہے۔

Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

کیا آپ اپنے آپ کو موآبی بادشاہ بلق بن صفور سے بہتر سمجھتے ہیں؟ اُس نے تو اسرائیل سے لڑنے بلکہ جھگڑنے تک کی ہمت نہ کی۔

And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,

اب اسرائیلی 300 سال سے حسبون اور عروعیر کے شہروں میں اُن کے گرد و نواح کی آبادیوں سمیت آباد ہیں اور اِسی طرح دریائے ارنون کے کنارے پر کے شہروں میں۔ آپ نے اِس دوران اِن جگہوں پر قبضہ کیوں نہ کیا؟

While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?

چنانچہ مَیں نے آپ سے غلط سلوک نہیں کیا بلکہ آپ ہی میرے ساتھ غلط سلوک کر رہے ہیں۔ کیونکہ مجھ سے جنگ چھیڑنا غلط ہے۔ رب جو منصف ہے وہی آج اسرائیل اور عمون کے جھگڑے کا فیصلہ کرے!“

Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

لیکن عمونی بادشاہ نے اِفتاح کے پیغام پر دھیان نہ دیا۔

Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

پھر رب کا روح اِفتاح پر نازل ہوا، اور وہ جِلعاد اور منسّی میں سے گزر گیا، پھر جِلعاد کے مِصفاہ کے پاس واپس آیا۔ وہاں سے وہ اپنی فوج لے کر عمونیوں سے لڑنے نکلا۔

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

پہلے اُس نے رب کے سامنے قَسم کھائی، ”اگر تُو مجھے عمونیوں پر فتح دے

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,

اور مَیں صحیح سلامت لوٹوں تو جو کچھ بھی پہلے میرے گھر کے دروازے سے نکل کر مجھ سے ملے وہ تیرے لئے مخصوص کیا جائے گا۔ مَیں اُسے بھسم ہونے والی قربانی کے طور پر پیش کروں گا۔“

Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

پھر اِفتاح عمونیوں سے لڑنے گیا، اور رب نے اُسے اُن پر فتح دی۔

So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.

اِفتاح نے عروعیر میں دشمن کو شکست دی اور اِسی طرح مِنّیت اور ابیل کرامیم تک مزید بیس شہروں پر قبضہ کر لیا۔ یوں اسرائیل نے عمون کو زیر کر دیا۔

And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

اِس کے بعد اِفتاح مِصفاہ واپس چلا گیا۔ وہ ابھی گھر کے قریب تھا کہ اُس کی اکلوتی بیٹی دف بجاتی اور ناچتی ہوئی گھر سے نکل آئی۔ اِفتاح کا کوئی اَور بیٹا یا بیٹی نہیں تھی۔

And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

اپنی بیٹی کو دیکھ کر وہ رنج کے مارے اپنے کپڑے پھاڑ کر چیخ اُٹھا، ”ہائے میری بیٹی! تُو نے مجھے خاک میں دبا کر تباہ کر دیا ہے، کیونکہ مَیں نے رب کے سامنے ایسی قَسم کھائی ہے جو بدلی نہیں جا سکتی۔“

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

بیٹی نے کہا، ”ابو، آپ نے قَسم کھا کر رب سے وعدہ کیا ہے، اِس لئے لازم ہے کہ میرے ساتھ وہ کچھ کریں جس کی قَسم آپ نے کھائی ہے۔ آخر اُسی نے آپ کو دشمن سے بدلہ لینے کی کامیابی بخش دی ہے۔

And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.

لیکن میری ایک گزارش ہے۔ مجھے دو ماہ کی مہلت دیں تاکہ مَیں اپنی سہیلیوں کے ساتھ پہاڑوں میں جا کر اپنی غیرشادی شدہ حالت پر ماتم کروں۔“

And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.

اِفتاح نے اجازت دی۔ پھر بیٹی دو ماہ کے لئے اپنی سہیلیوں کے ساتھ پہاڑوں میں چلی گئی اور اپنی غیرشادی شدہ حالت پر ماتم کیا۔

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

پھر وہ اپنے باپ کے پاس واپس آئی، اور اُس نے اپنی قَسم کا وعدہ پورا کیا۔ بیٹی غیرشادی شدہ تھی۔ اُس وقت سے اسرائیل میں دستور رائج ہے

And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,

کہ اسرائیل کی جوان عورتیں سالانہ چار دن کے لئے اپنے گھروں سے نکل کر اِفتاح کی بیٹی کی یاد میں جشن مناتی ہیں۔

That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
